  • We derive the point-spread function of the reconstructed image from a point-source complex hologram, which includes phase error caused by polarization components, in the longitudinal direction of the point-spread function and analyze the effect of the error sources of polarization components having influence on image reconstruction of a point-source complex hologram in incoherent triangular holography.

  • The simultaneous suppression of sidelobes and the sharpening of the central peak in the process of diffraction pattern detection based on asymmetric apodization have been investigated. Asymmetric apodization is applied to a semicircular array of two-dimensional (2D) aperture functions, which is a series of 'coded-phase arrays of semicircular rings randomly distributed over the central circular region of a pupil function' and is similar to that used in the field of diffractive optics. The point spread function (PSF) of an imaging system with asymmetric apodization of the discrete type has been found to possess a good side with suppressed sidelobes, whereas its bad side contains enhanced sidelobes. Further, the diffracted field characteristics are obtained in the presence of these aperture functions. Asymmetric apodization is helpful in improving the performance of the optical gratings or 2D arrays used in real-time imaging techniques.

  • We present a novel deblurring algorithm for bi-level images blurred by some parameterizable point spread function. The proposed method iteratively searches unknown parameters in the point spread function and noise-to-signal ratio by minimizing an objective function that is based on the binariness and the difference between two intensity values of restoring image. In simulations and experiments, the proposed method showed improved performance compared with the Wiener filtering based method in terms of bit error rate after segmentation.

  • In this paper we propose a sub-pixel point spread function (PSF) estimation method for a fully digital auto-focusing system. We assume that the amount of out-of-focus is the same along the concentric circle. In order to estimate the accurate PSF, sub-pixel information is considered in the proposed PSF estimation procedure. The feasibility of the proposed algorithm is experimentally demonstrated.

  • In this work, for the first time, the quality of restoration in wide-field microscopy images after deconvolution was analyzed as a function of different Point Spread Functions using one deconvolution method, on a specimen of known size and on a biological specimen. The empirical Point Spread Function determination can significantly depend on the numerical aperture, refractive index of the embedding medium, refractive index of the immersion oil and cover slip thickness. The influence of all of these factors is shown in the same article and using the same microscope. We have found that the best deconvolution results are obtained when the empirical PSF utilized is obtained under the same conditions as the specimen. We also demonstrated that it is very important to quantitatively check the process' outcome using several quality indicators: Full-Width at Half-Maximum, Contrast-to-Noise Ratio, Signal-to-Noise Ratio and a Tenengrad-based function. We detected a significant improvement when using an indicator to measure the focus of the whole stack. Therefore, to qualitatively determinate the best deconvolved image between different conditions, one approach that we are pursuing is to use Tenengrad-based function indicators in images obtained using a wide-field microscope.

  • The point spread function (PSF) of an optical system is in general defined as a two-dimensional intensity distribution which results from a single point source at infinity. It is an important key for the evaluation of the optical performance of an astronomical telescope. The PSFs of the soft X-ray telescope (SXT) aboard Yohkoh were measured in a wide range of the field-of-view under the in-flight configuration at White Sands Missile Range prior to launching the satellite. It has been known that the SXT PSF has a sharp peak at the core and the intensity drops very fast as it goes distant from the center. Due to the combination of this sharp peak at the PSF core and the effect of undersampling by a large pixel size, a carefully designed method is requested in the examination of the PSF data. The pattern of the SXT PSF is determined by the fitting of a mathematical functional form to the pre-launch experimental data. The elliptical Moffat function has been adopted for the evaluation of the SXT PSF. It is revealed from our study that the SXT PSF shows a peculiar characteristics, and thus a careful consideration on the undersampling effect and also a proper choice of statistics are necessary for the determination of the best fit function of the PSF. Details on the on- and off-axis SXT PSF in the field-of-view will be introduced and discussed in our presentation.

  • The modulation transfer function (MTF) in a camera system is a measurement of how well the system will faithfully reproduce the original scene. The electro-optical camera system consists of optics, an array of pixels, and an electronics which is related to the image signal chain. The system MTF can be cascaded with each element's MTF in the frequency domain. That is to say, the electronics MTF including the detector MTF can be recalculated easily by the acquired system MTF if the well-known test optics is used in the measuring process. A Time-Delay and Integration (TDI) detector can make a signal increase by taking multiple exposures of the same object and adding them. It can be considered the various methods to measure the MTF of the TDI camera system. This paper shows the actual and practical MTF measuring methods for the detector and electronics in the TDI camera. The several methods are described according to the scan direction as well as the TDI stages such as the single line mode and the multiple-lines mode. The measuring is performed in the in the static condition or dynamic condition to get the point spread function (PSF) or the line spread function (LSF). Especially, the dynamic test bench is used to simulate on track velocity to synchronize with TDI read out frequency for the dynamic movement.

  • This paper shows that blind deconvolution has only finite solutions when an original image and a point spread function are nonzero over a restricted domain, in other words, an observed image has a compact support. The key of the proof is to use z-transformations and factorizations of polynomials. Then, we propose an algorithm to find all finite solutions under the boundary condition. Finally, we confirm that we can extract all sets of an original image and a point spread function from a degraded image by using our algorithm in numerical examples.
