As environmentally friendly energy takes center stage, interests for Electric Vehicles/Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (EVs/PHEVs) are getting increase. With this trend, there is no doubt EVs will take large portion to penetrations of total cars. Therefore, accurate EV modeling is required. Battery is one of the main components with the power system view of aspect. Hence, in this paper, reviews and discussions of some types of batteries for EV are contained by considering energy density and weight of the batteries. In addition, simulations of Li-Ion battery are accomplished with various variables such as temperature, capacity fading and charge/discharge current. It is confirmed that temperature is the main factor of capacity fading. Validation of the modeled battery is also conducted by comparing it with commercialized battery.
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) will be widely used in future transportation systems to reduce oil fuel consumption. Therefore, the electrical energy demand will be increased due to the charging of a large number of vehicles. Without intelligent control strategies, the charging process can easily overload the electricity grid at peak hours. In this paper, we consider a smart charging and discharging process for multiple PHEVs in a building's garage to optimize the energy consumption profile of the building. We formulate a centralized optimization problem in which the building controller or planner aims to minimize the square Euclidean distance between the instantaneous energy demand and the average demand of the building by controlling the charging and discharging schedules of PHEVs (or 'users'). The PHEVs' batteries will be charged during low-demand periods and discharged during high-demand periods in order to reduce the peak load of the building. In a decentralized system, we design an energy cost-sharing model and apply a non-cooperative approach to formulate an energy charging and discharging scheduling game, in which the players are the users, their strategies are the battery charging and discharging schedules, and the utility function of each user is defined as the negative total energy payment to the building. Based on the game theory setup, we also propose a distributed algorithm in which each PHEV independently selects its best strategy to maximize the utility function. The PHEVs update the building planner with their energy charging and discharging schedules. We also show that the PHEV owners will have an incentive to participate in the energy charging and discharging game. Simulation results verify that the proposed distributed algorithm will minimize the peak load and the total energy cost simultaneously.
This study analyzes transitions to a green path in transportation system in South Korea. We develop transportation system model with four new technology options, green cars; Hybrid electric vehicle, plug-in hybrid vehicle, electric vehicle and fuel cell vehicle. Among those technologies fuel cell vehicle is the best option assuming no GHG emissions when driving. We use MESSAGE model to get an optimal solution of pathway for high deployment of fuel cell vehicles under the Korea BAU transportation model. Among hydrogen production sources, off gas hydrogen is most economic since it is hardly used to other chemical sources or emits in South Korea. According to off gas hydrogen projection it can run 1.8 million fuel cell vehicles in 2040 which corresponds to 10% of all passenger cars expected in Korea in 2040. However, there are concerns associated with technology maturity, cost uncertainty which has contradictions. But clean pathway with off gas and renewable sources may provide a strong driving force for energy transition in transportation in South Korea.
This paper describes the process of optimal resonant frequency design with full-bridge series-loaded resonant dc-dc converter in a high efficiency 3.3 kW on-board battery charger application for Electric Vehicles and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles. The optimal range of resonant frequency and switching frequency used for ZVS are determined by considering trade-off between loss of switching devices and resonant network with size of passive/magnetic devices. In addition, it is defined charging region of battery, the load of on-board charger, as the area of load by deliberating the characteristic of resonant. It is verified the designed frequency band by reflecting the defined area on resonant frequency.
The electromagnetic characteristics of FCEVs (fuel cell electric vehicles) are much different from the existing combustion engine cars as well as hybrid, plug-in-hybrid, and pure electric vehicles due to the high voltage/current generated by a fuel cell stack which uses a compressed hydrogen gas reacted with oxygen. To operate fuel cell stack efficiently, BOP (Balance of Plant) which is consisted of many motors in water pump, air blower, and hydrogen recycling pump as well as inverters for these motors is essential. Furthermore, there are also electric systems for entertainment, information, and vehicle control such as navigation, broadcasting, vehicle dynamic control systems, and so on. Since these systems are connected by high voltage or general cables, EMC (Electromagnetic compatibility) analysis for high voltage and general cable of FCEV is the most important element to prevent the possible electric functional safety errors. In this paper, electromagnetic fields by high voltage and general cables for FCEVs is studied. From numerical analysis results, total time harmonic electromagnetic field strength from high voltage and general cables have difference of 13~16 dB due to ground effect by impedance matching. The EMI results of FECV at 10 m distance shows difference of 41 dB at 30 MHz and 54 dB at 230 MHz compared with only general cable routing.

Green technologies such as renewable energy resources, Electric Vehicles and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (EVs/PHEVs), electric locomotives, etc. are continually increasing at the existing power network especially distribution levels, which are Medium Voltage (MV) and Low Voltage (LV). It can be noted that the increasing level of green technologies is driven by the reduction emission policies of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$). The green technologies can affect the quality of power, and hence its impacts of are analysed. In practical, the environment such as wind, solar irradiation, temperature etc. are uncontrollable, and therefore the output power of renewable energy in that area can be varied. Moreover, the technology of the EVs/PHEVs is still developed in order to improve the performance of supply and driving systems. This means that these developed can cause harmonic distortion as the control system is mostly used power electronics. Therefore, this paper aims to analyse the voltage variation and harmonic distortion in distribution power network in urban area in Europe due to the combination between wind turbine, hydro turbine, photovoltaic (PV) system and EVs/PHEVs. More realistic penetration levels of SSDGs and EVs/PHEVs as forecasted for 2020 is used to analyse. The dynamic load demands are also taken into account. In order to ensure the accurate of simulation results, the practical parameters of distribution system are used and the international standards such as Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) standards are also complied. The suggestion solutions are also presented. The MATLAB/Simulink software is chosen as it can support complicate modelling and analysis.
For OBC (On-Board Charger) and LDC (Low DC-DC Converter) used as essential power conversion systems of PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), system performance is required as well as reliability, which is need to protect the vehicle and driver from various faults. While current development processor is sufficient for embodying functions and verifying performance in normal state during development of prototypes for OBC and LDC, there is no clear method of verification for various fault situations that occur in abnormal state and for securing stability of vehicle base, unless verification is performed by mounting on an actual vehicle. In this paper, a CCM (Charger Converter Module) was developed as an integrated structure of OBC and LDC. In addition, diverse fault situations that can occur in vehicles are simulated by a simulator to artificially inject into power conversion system and to test whether it operates properly. Also, HILS (Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation) is carried out to verify whether LDC is operated properly under power environment of an actual vehicle.
Efficient and durable electrical energy storage is one of the major factors limiting the wide-spread adoption of renewable energy. Since lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) were first commercialized in the early 1990s, LIBs have emerged as an important energy storage device for portable electronics. LIBs are very desirable because of their high energy storage per volume and per mass. However, LIBs with high energy and power as well as higher stability are needed for their use in a variety of energy storage applications such as MEMS devices, PDA, plug-in hybrids, all-electric vehicles and large scale utility systems. In this talk, I will discuss present energy perspective, especially energy storage and its role in renewable energy. After that I will discuss the recent advances in nanostructured materials and interface engineering that have led to the achievement of improved Li-ion batteries. Finally I will talk aboutcritical issues that need to be addressed to obtain further improvements in Li-ion batteries.
Recent global warming to the promotion of electric vehicles (EV), plug-in hybrid (PEV), including the next generation of cars and solar power, wind power and other renewable energy, and next-generation power grid (smart grid) are getting attention. In addition, the system utilizes the battery life in the industry and the convenience of a variety of social systems, economics, environmental impact, and the inherent potential to change significantly, and you can not walk into a next-generation industrial strategy and the need increases more and more present, and its early commercialization In order to do this, as well as a key energy source, the battery charger for charging efficiency technologies is essential. In this paper, fast charge multiple battery modules and optional modules that can charge distribution charge will be introduced.
