  • A dehumidifier using a thermoelement has many advantages compare to a dehumidifier using compressor systems. However, it is crucial to optimize the performance of heat sink for improving heat dissipation problem on the heat generation part. In this study, we utilized computational fluid dynamics software to compare Nusselt number, temperature and system efficiency based on fin thickness, flow gap between fin and fin length. Moreover, slip flow on the boundary layer was applied for the further analysis. Our objective in this study is to suggest an optimal fin shape to improve heat transfer with the tendency of performance factor depending on change of the shapes. Our results on the optimization of fin shape and analysis of slip flow will be utilized to enhance the heat transfer in the heat sink which is important in the design of dehumidifier using a thermoelement.

  • In this study the optimization of plate-fin type heat sink with vortex generator for the thermal stability is performed numerically. The optimum solutions in the heat sink are obtained when the temperature rise and the pressure drop are minimized simultaneously. Thermal performance of heat sink is influenced by the heat sink shape such as the base-part fin width, lower-part fin width, and basement thickness. To acquire the optimal design variables automatically, CFD and mathematical optimization are integrated. The flow and thermal fields are predicted using the finite volume method. The optimization is carried out by means of the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method which is widely used for the constrained nonlinear optimization problem. The results show that the optimal design variables are as follows; B$_1$=2.584 mm, B$_2$=1.741 mm, and t=7.914 mm when the temperature rise is less than 40 K. Comparing with the initial design, the temperature rise is reduced by 4.2 K, while the pressure drop is increased by 9.43 Pa. The relationship between the pressure drop and the temperature rise is also presented to select the heat sink shape for the designers.

  • Air-cooled heat sinks are employed in many electronic cooling applications since they provide significant heat transfer enhancement and operational flexibility. Strip-shaped fin heat sink is of interest and needs to be investigated as general cooling products for more applicability. The purposes of this study are to evaluate heat sink performance without bypass flow condition and to determine optimal heat sink geometries. The results show that the decreasing rate of thermal resistance of a heat sink decreases with increasing inlet air velocity, and the increasing rate of pressure drop increases with increasing inlet air velocity, but is not affected by input power. The increasing rate of optimal longitudinal fin spacing is larger than that of transverse fin spacing. The strip fin heat sink tested in this study showed better cooling performance compared to that of other plate fin type.matism. 2004; 50(11): 3504-3515.

  • Analytical thermal models based on average convection heat transfer are frequently used for the design and selection of forced air-cooled plate fin heat sinks. In this paper, a convection heat transfer model within a ±10% margin of error was presented through experimental investigation. Five types of heat sinks with inlet widths of 1.7-6.8 mm were tested at 50-160 W heat sources to derive and verify the model. Causes of error between the experiment and analytical thermal model were analyzed and listed to design the heat sink. Using proposed method and the lists to be considered in the paper, a quick and accurate heat sink design of the power-conversion system is expected.

  • Thermal analysis of new designed heat-sink models was carried out according to the natural ana the forced convection using computational fluid dynamics(CFD). Heat resistance of wave type, top vented wave type and plate type of heat sink was compared with each other As the direction of fin and air flow are vertical(z-axis), it is shown that radiant heat performance of all of heat sinks was superior than other experimental conditions. Especially, the heat resistance of top vented wave heat sink was $0.17^{\circ}C/W$(forced convection) and $0.48^{\circ}C/W$(natural convection). The radiant heat performance of heat sink was increased with increasing the height of fin and the width of fin pitch.

  • This research presented the heat resistance characteristics of heat sink which is newly designed through the experiment. For the same volume and base plate of heat sinks, the experiment of heat transfer characteristics was conducted for forced convection of layered type heat sink. The heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of the layered type heat sink were compared for the various kinds of fin pitches, fin heights and heights of heat sink. The results show that thermal resistance is decreased as the height of heat sink increases and the fin height and fin pitch decrease, From the experimental data of layered type heat sink, the correlation equation of Nusselt number was obtained as follows ; $$Nu=0.845{\cdot}Re^{0.393}{\cdot}(\frac{f_h}{D_h})^{0.160}{\cdot}(\frac{f_p}{D_h})^{0.372}{\cdot}(\frac{H_{hs}}{D_h})^{-0.942}$$

  • This paper reports numerical study results with respect to the thermal behavior of a natural convection cooled hybrid fin heat sink (HFH). The HFH consists of hybrid fins, hollow pin fins integrated with plate fins. The thermal performance of the HFH was numerically investigated by employing a commercial CFD software package and compared with that of the pin fin heat sink (PFH). Numerical study has found that array-based and mass-based heat transfer coefficients of the HFH are 12% and 37% greater than those of the PFH, respectively. Extended surface area and lighter weight may explain the better thermal performance of the HFH than the PFH.

  • In this paper, an experimental investigation is performed to estimate the thermal performance of a natural convective heat sink with plate fins subject to the uniform wall temperature condition. Extensive experiments are performed with various input powers, fin spacings, and heights of the natural convective heat sinks with plate fins. In particular, the effect of the inclination angle on the thermal performance of the heat sink is studied. In order to validate the experimental data, the experimental results are compared with results from previous studies. Based on the experimental results, the appropriate ranges of the previous correlations between the input power, the fin spacing, the fin height, and the inclination angle for the natural convective heat sink with plate fins are evaluated.

  • An inclined jet impinging on a pin fin heat sink is proposed and investigated experimentally. To investigate the flow pattern, flow visualization using fluorescence and velocity measurement using particle image velocimetry(PIV) are conducted with water. The jet impinges over a wide span of the heat sink with a large recirculation in the upper free space and occasionally with another smaller one in the upstream corner. Further, thermal experimentation is conducted using air to obtain temperature profiles using a thermocouple rake in the air and using thermal image on the heat sink back plate, with impinging angles of 35, 45 and 55 degrees. The Reynolds number range based on the nozzle slot is varied from 1507 to 6405. The results show that impinging angle of 55 degree shows the largest heat transfer capability. The results of thermal experiment are compared and discussed with those of flow visualization.
