콜로게이트 열교환기와 평판형 열교환기의 열전달특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study on the Heat Transfer Characteristics in Corrugated and Flat Plate Type Heat Exchanger)

  • An experiment was performed to study heat transfer characteristics between corrugated heat exchanger and flat plate type one. While heat capacity(13.86kW) was provided constantly and the flow speed was varied from 2.8 to 17.9m/s, The temperature and the pressure drop were measured. Furthermore, Heat transfer coefficient, Colburn factor and Nusselt number were calculated using them. With increase of the flow speed for both exchangers, the coefficient and the pressure drop increased, but Colburn factor decreased. The coefficient, pressure drop and Colburn factor of the corrugated type were all higher than those of the flat one, which is due to the flow interruption with recirculation and reattachment of the corrugated type. The empirical correlations of Nusselt number were suggested for the tested two heat exchangers.

Galvanic Corrosion Between Component Parts of Aluminum Alloys for Heat Exchanger of Automobile

  • There are a variety of heat exchangers used in automobiles, such as shell and tube heat exchangers, double tube heat exchangers, and plate heat exchangers. Most of them are water-cooled to prevent engine overheating. There have been reports of corrosion damage to these heat exchangers due to continuous wetting caused by external temperature differences, road pollutants, and snow removal. In addition, galvanic corrosion, which occurs when two dissimilar materials come into contact, has been identified as a major cause. In this study, corrosion characteristics and galvanic corrosion behavior of Al alloy (AA3003, AA4045 and AA7072) used in automobile heat exchangers were analyzed. Effective clad materials for heat exchanger tubes and fins were also evaluated. It was found that AA7072 should be applied as the cladding material for fin AA3003 and that AA4045 was suitable as a cladding material for tube AA3003 because this clad materials application was the most effective clad design to delay the occurrence of pinhole in the tube. Main factors influencing galvanic corrosion dissolution were found to be galvanic corrosion potential difference and galvanic corrosion current density.

  • The plate heat exchanger has been widely used in water heating systems due to high efficiency, simple structure, and easy maintenance. However, the studies on the effects of fouling on the heat transfer performance under various operation and maintenance conditions are very limited in the open literature. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of fouling with calcium carbonate ($CaCO_3$) on the heat transfer characteristics of the plate heat exchanger under various operating and geometric conditions. The heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop in the plate heat exchangers were measured under accelerated fouling conditions with $CaCO_3$ by varying geometric and operational parameters. The fouling resistance increased with the decrease in the flow rate, and the increase in the chevron angle and the concentration.

세척이 가능한 원통 코일형 열교환기의 파울링 특성에 관한 연구 (Fouling Characteristics of Washable Shell and Coil Heat Exchanger)

  • In this work, we studied the shell and helically coiled tube heat exchangers. Shell and coil heat exchangers with different rate of water flow and plate heat exchanger with same capacity were tested for condensing conditions. We proposed design guide using modified Wilson plot method. We compared fouling characteristics between shell and coil heat exchanger and plate heat exchanger, when they were washed and were not washed. The shell and coil heat exchanger showed 120% of higher saturated fouling resistance value and 4% of better heat transfer ratio than the plate heat exchanger.

  • Microscale heat transfer and microfluidics have become increasingly important to overcome some very complex engineering challenges. The use of very small passages to gain heat transfer enhancement is a well documented method for achieving high heat flux dissipation. In this study, the performance evaluation of micro-channel plated heat exchangers with straight, V-shaped and Y-shaped channels has been experimentally carried out under the counterflow condition. It is found that the mixing effect in V-shaped and Y-shaped channels enhances the heat transfer but pressure drop does not increase seriously in the range of low Reynolds number.

As the passage size is decreased, the heat transfer performance increases but the pressure drop increases sharply when the passage size is reduced.   • Numerical analysis has been carried out to investigate air-side convective heat transfer characteristics in compact heat exchangers with continuous plate fins. Simulation results such as air flow and temperature distributions are presented, and heat transfer characteristics are compared for various inlet conditions. Results from various turbulence models are also compared for applicability. There is large difference between the local heat transfer coefficient distributions along the cylinder wall for circular tubes. Colburn j factors from the calculated results of circular and flat tubes in the heat exchangers are compared for various Reynolds number. The predicted results in this study can be applied to the optimal design of air conditioning system. with compact heat exchanger.

Impacts of Fouling and Cleaning on the Performance of Plate Fin and Spine Fin Heat Exchangers

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effects of air-side fouling and cleaning on the performances of various condenser coils used in unitary air-conditioning systems. A total of six condenser coils with different fin geometry and row number were tested. Performance tests were performed at three different conditions: clean-as-received, after fouling, and after cleaning. In all cases, it was observed that the fouling was mostly confined to the frontal face of the heat exchanger as reported in the previous investigations. The amount of deposited dust was more dependent on fin geometry for the single-row heat exchangers than for the double-row heat exchangers. The predominant effect of fouling was to cause a more significant increase in air-side pressure drop than a degradation in heat transfer performance. For the single-row heat exchangers, the pressure drop increased by 28 to 31%, while the heat transfer performance decreased by 7 to 12% at the standard air face velocity of 1.53 m/s depending on fin shape. For the double-row heat exchangers, the pressure drop increased by 22 to 37%, and heat transfer performance decreased by only 4-5% at the same air face velocity. Once the contaminated coils were cleaned according to the given cleaning procedure the original performance of the heat exchangers could almost be recovered completely. The pressure drop could be restored within 1 to 7% and the heat transfer performance could be recovered to within 1 to 5% of the originally clean heat exchangers. Therefore, it is concluded that a periodic application of the specified cleaning technique will be effective in maintaining the thermal performance of the condenser coils.

성능선도에 의한 다통로 판형열교환기의 간이설계법 (An easy-to-use design procedure for multipass plate heat exchangers based on the performance plots)

  • Based on a set of performance plots relating the design variables to the imposed conditions, an easy-to-use and versatile design procedure for chevron-type multipass plate heat exchangers is developed. In order for the present procedure to cover multipass with unequal passes and non-unity ratio of heat capacity rate, each stream number of transfer unit is adopted as the basic design variable instead of the exchanger number of transfer unit. It is found that there exists a unique relation between the stream and exchanger number of transfer units regardless of the chevron angle and the plate length. In addition, for a given value of the pressure drop the heat transfer area per unit mass flow rate can be expressed in terms of the stream number of transfer unit only. These two relationships in the form of simple plots constitute the framework of design. The sample results in comparison with the available data indicate that the present procedure includes the previous ones as a subset, and that every design method is affected essentially by the selection of specific correlations for the heat transfer coefficient and the friction factor.

  • This study presents the air side heat transfer and friction characteristics of fin-tube heat exchangers with various fin types. A total of 8 samples of heat exchangers are tested. Fin patterns tested are slit, louver and plate fins. Each fin type has three cases of number of tube rows(N=1, 2, 3) and two different fin pitches. The results are plotted in terms of Colburn j-factor and friction factor f with respect to Reynolds number in the range of 200 to 510.
