  • The purpose of this research is to propose a system to detect a strip defect on a iron plate using an image processing, one way of finding defects on an iron plate. An existing way of image processing is using a light source which release a light energy in a certain frequency and a light absorbing display which responds to the light source. This research attempts to detect defects by using the image processing which handles an illumination, without depending on characteristics of light frequency. One of the advantages of this method is that it makes up for the weakness of the existing method which was too difficult for users to notice a defect. Also this method makes it possible to realize a real-time monitoring on a plate of iron.

  • In this paper, we propose a license plate detection method with improved Adaboost learning and MCT (Modified Census Transform). The MCT represents the local structure patterns as integer numbered feature values which has robustness to illumination change and memory efficiency. However, since these integer values are discrete, a lookup table is needed to design a weak classifier for Adaboost learning. Some previous research efforts have focused on minimization of exponential criterion for Adaboost optimization. In this paper, a method that uses MCT and improved Adaboost learning based on Newton's optimization to exponential criterion is proposed for license plate detection. Experimental results on license patch images and field images demonstrate that the proposed method yields higher performance of detection rates with low false positives than the conventional method using the original Adaboost learning.

  • This study investigates the possibility of damage detection of a real bridge by means of a modal parameter-based finite element (FE) model update. Field moving vehicle experiments were conducted on an actual steel plate girder bridge. In the damage experiment, cracks were applied to the bridge to simulate damage states. A fast Bayesian FFT method was employed to identify and quantify uncertainties of the modal parameters then these modal parameters were used in the Bayesian model update. Material properties and boundary conditions are taken as uncertainties and updated in the model update process. Observations showed that although some differences existed in the results obtained from different model classes, the discrepancy between modal parameters of the FE model and those experimentally obtained was reduced after the model update process, and the updated parameters in the numerical model were indeed affected by the damage. The importance of boundary conditions in the model updating process is also observed. The capability of the MCMC model update method for application to the actual bridge structure is assessed, and the limitation of FE model update in damage detection of bridges using only modal parameters is observed.

  • This paper proposes a vehicle license plate recognition system using light weight deep learning models without high-end server. The proposed license plate recognition system consists of 3 steps: [license plate detection]-[character area segmentation]-[character recognition]. SSD-Mobilenet was used for license plate detection, ResNet with localization was used for character area segmentation, ResNet was used for character recognition. Experiemnts using Samsung Galaxy S7 and LG Q9, accuracy showed 85.3% accuracy and around 1.1 second running time.

  • An effective method for detection linear flaws in plate structures via two-dimensional discrete wavelet transform is proposed in this study. The proposed method was applied to a four-fixed supported rectangular plate containing damage with arbitrary length, depth and location. Numerical results identifying the damage location are compared with the actual results to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Also, a wavelet-based method presented for de-noising of mode shape of plate. Finally, the performance of the proposed method for de-noising and damage identification was verified using experimental data. Comparison between the location detected by the proposed method, and the plate's actual damage location revealed that the methodology can be used as an accessible and effective technique for damage identification of actual plate structures.

  • In this study, we produced the surface defect detection model to automatically detect defect bone plates using a deep learning algorithm. Bone plates with a width and a length of 50 mm are most used for fracture treatment. Normal bone plates and defective bone plates were printed on the 3d printer. Normal bone plates and defective bone plates were photographed with 1,080 pixels using the webcam. The total quantity of collected images was 500. 300 images were used to learn the defect detection model. 200 images were used to test the defect detection model. The mAP(Mean Average Precision) method was used to evaluate the performance of the surface defect detection model. As the result of confirming the performance of the surface defect detection model, the detection accuracy was 96.3 %.

  • In this paper we propose an algorithm to extract the license plate regions from Korean car images. The idea of this paper is that we first find the four digits in the input car image and then segment the plate region using the digit information. Out method has advantage of segmenting simultaneously the plate regions and four digits regions. The first step finds and groups the connected components with proper sizes as candidate digits. The second step applies an serial alignment condition to find out probable 4-digits. In the third step, we recognize the candidate digits and assign the confidence values to each of them. The final step extracts the license plate region which has the highest confidence value. We used the Perfect Metrics classification algorithm to estimate the confidence. In our experiment, we got 97.23% and 95.45% correct detection rates, 0.09% and 0.11% false detection rates for 4,600 daytime and 264 nighttime images, respectively.

  • Ultrasonic guided waves are gaining increasing attention for the inspection of platelike and rodlike structures. At the same time, inspection methods that do not require contact with the test piece are being developed for advanced applications. This paper capitalizes on recent advances in the areas of guided wave ultrasonics and noncontact ultrasonics to demonstrate a superior method for the nondestructive detection of thinning defects simulating hidden corrosion in thin aluminum plates. The proposed approach uses EMAT(electro-magnetic acoustic transducer) for the noncontact generation and detection of guided plate waves. Interesting features in the dispersive behavior of selected guided modes are used for the detection of plate thinning. It is shown that mode cutoff measurements provide a qualitative detection of thinning defects. Measurement of the mode group velocity can be also used to quantify of thinning depth.

  • This paper proposes a method of the car license plate recognition from digital camera image. Lots of technology advancement has been accomplished for the least several years. The key issue for recognition rate improvement has been the extraction of correct area on the plate. In the previous studies, the information from an edge or an color on a plate hasn't been used but some declination also taken into account in most cases due to the difficulty of area extraction on a tilted plate The proposed method focuses on transforming a slant plate image to the normalized form to be recognized. It shows good robustness on situations defined by a variety of locations, slants and heights of the license plate, because it detects the edge of license plate by using both the color information and linear regression method. The computer simulation shows that the proposed method records 92% detection rates of license plate and can recognize characters of slant plate with about 50 degrees.

  • This paper proposes a method that detects a license plate in complex background using a multiple-color model and character layout information. A layout of a green license plate is different from that of a white license plate. So, this study used a strategy that firstly assumes the plate color and then utilizes its layout information. At first, it extracts green areas from an input image using a multiple-color model which combined HIS and YIQ color models with RGB color model. If green areas are detected, it searches the character layout of the green plate by analyzing the connected components in each areas. If not detected, it searches the character layout of the white plate in all area. Finally, it extracts a license plate by grouping the connected components which corresponds to characters. Experimental result shows that 98.1% of 419 input images are correctly detected. It also shows that the proposed method is robust against illumination, shadow, and weather condition.
