Effects of Guemengja (Rosae Laevigatae Michx.) Extracts on serum and liver lipid composition and antioxidative capacity were investigated in rat fed high oxidized fat. Twenty eight male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 159.35$\pm$2.17g were blocked into four groups according to body weight and raised seven weeks with basal diet (normal group, I), basal diet and 10% oxidized fat (control group, II), basal diet, 10% oxidized fat and 100mg/kgg Guemengja Extracts (100mg/kg Guemengja Extracts group, III) and basal diet, 10% oxidized fat and 200mg/kg Guemengja Extracts (200mg/kg Guemengja Extracts group, IV). The level of plasma total cholesterol and triglyceride showed a tendency to decrease, whereas the plasma HDL-cholesterol concentration revealed a tendency to increase in guemengja extracts groups. The level of liver total cholesterol showed no significantly different in all treatment groups, however the level of liver triglyceride showed a tendance to decrease in guemengja extracts groups. Thiobarbituric acid(TBARS) values in plasma and liver showed a tendence to decrease in guemengja extracts groups. The guemengja extracts samples have also decreased the plasma GOT and GPT activities, whereas they have increased the liver glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and catalase activity.
This study was carried out to compare UCP2 polymorphism, dietary habits, and obesity index in normal and obese university students. The survey was carried out using self-questionnaires collected from the 126 normal and 60 obese university students. The results are summarized as follows. Breakfast was skipped in 43.7% of normal and 49.3% of obesity students and it appeared obese students eat faster than normal students. The percentage of weight control experience were 49.2 and 71.0 in the normal and obese students, respectively. Blood levels of lipid profiles(triglyceride, LDL cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol), hemoglobin, AST and ALT were anaylzed. In UCP2 genes, the frequency of deletion homozygote(DD) was 71.5%, heterozygote(DI) was 26.9% and insertion homozygote(II) was 1.6%. Plasma levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol of normal students were 79.06, 172.25, 100.86 and 57.03 mg/dl, and those of obese students were 93.06, 173.22, 101.22 and 54.39 mg/dl, respectively. Blood parameters were in normal range in both group. Plasma triglyceride, total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels of obese students were higher than those of normal students. On the other hand, plasma HDL cholesterol levels of obese students were lower than those of normal students. Plasma levels of AST and ALT were in normal range in both group. However, AST and ALT levels of obese students were higher than that of normal students. Thus, it was recommended for them to have a nutritional education program to improve their dietary and living habits for obese students’health. Nutritional education program should also be organized practically and systematically.
This study was carried out to compared the characteristics of the underweight university students with those of overweight university students. The surey was carried out by self-questionnaires with 97 underweight and 156 overweight university students. The results are summarized as fellows. Breakfast was skipped in 37.1% of underweight and 46.2% of overweight students and it appeared overweight students eat faster than underweight students. The 16.5% of underweight and 75.0% of overweight students have correct perception about their body image. The percentage of weight control experience were 25.8and 55.8 in the underweight and overweight students, respectively. Blood levels of lipid profiles(triglyceride, LDL cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol), hemoglobin, AST and ALT were anaylzed. Plasma levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol of underweight students were 96.41, 143.75, 97.53 and 56.27 mg/dl, and those of overweight students were 107.99, 164.31, 100.08 and 53.64 mg/dl, respectively. Blood parameters were in normal range in both group. Plasma triglyceride, total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels o( overweight students were higher than those of underweight students. On the other hand, plasma HDL cholesterol levels of overweight students were lower than those of underweight students. Plasma levels of AST and ALT were in normal range in both group. However, AST and ALT levels of overweight students were higher than that of underweight students. Therefore they should have a nutritional education program to improve their dietary and living habits for overweight students' health. And nutritional education program should be organized practically and systematically
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of exercise training on blood and metabolic variances and genes expressions in hyperlipidemic rats. Three weeks-old male rats were randomly assigned into chow (n=7), high-fat diet (HF, n=7) and HF+exercise (HF+EX, n=7) groups. Exercise training consisted of the treadmill running 5 times per week during 8 weeks (0% grade, 30 min/time for first 4 weeks and 0% grade, 60 min/time the other 4weeks). The levels of triglyceride and total -cholesterol were increased in HF diet compared with chow group, and recovered to level of chow group by exercise training. Plasma glucose and insulin concentrations increased by 40 and 50%, respectively in HF diet compared with chow diet group, and these increases returned to the level of chow group by exercise training (p<.05). Body weight and abdominal fat mass were increased by high-fat diet compared with chow diet, and recovered to level of chow group by exercise training. Long-chain fatty acid oxidation rate and AMPK protein expression was not changed by HF diet, but increased by exercise training compared with high-fat diet (p<.05). UCP3 protein expression was not changed by either high-fat diet or exercise training compared with chow group. There was high correlation between plasma triglyceride and total cholesterol concentrations(p<.01). Plasma triglyceride or total cholesterol level showed correlation with following factors; plasma insulin and glucose levels, body weight, abdominal fat weight, UCP3 protein expression and long-chain fatty acid oxidation rate. These results showed that exercise training on the treadmill recovered hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia induced by high-fat diet for 8 weeks. These exercise effects may be related with decreased body weight and abdominal fat mass, and increased long-chain fatty acid oxidation rate.
Effects of $LR_3$(太衝), $GB_{39}$(懸鍾) and $SP_4$(公孫) acupuncture on lipid composition were investigated in rat fed high fat diet. The results obtained from this study are as follows : 1. In the all treatment groups, the body weight values after feeding the basal diet for 4 weeks were significantly decreased compared to the initial body weight. However the decrement of body weight showed a high in acupuncture groups compared to those of control group. In the acupuncture groups, the decrement of body weight showed a high in the $LR_3$ acupuncture groups. 2. The contents of plasma ${\beta}$-lipoprotein and free fatty acids showed a tendency to decrease in the acupuncture groups compared to those of control group and the values of $LR_3$ acupuncture groups showed a low in the acupuncture groups. 3. The contents of plasma triglyceride showed a low values in the complex treatment group of $LR_3,\;GB_{39}$ and $SP_4$. However among the other treatment groups, this values showed no significantly different. The contents of liver triglyceride showed a tendency to decrease in all acupuncture groups except to the complex treatment group of $GB_{39}$ and $SP_4$ acupuncture and in the acupuncture groups, $LR_3$ acupuncture groups were lower than $GB_{39}$ and $SP_4$ acupuncture groups. 4. The contents of plasma glucose showed a tendency to decrease by the acupuncture treatment and $LR_3$ acupuncture groups showed a lower values than other acupuncture groups. 5. In the values of plasma glutamic oxaloacetate transferase activity, $LR_3$ acupuncture group and the complex treatment group of $LR_3,\;GB_{39}$ and $SP_4$ acupuncture were a lower values than other treatment groups and among the other treatment groups showed no significantly different. The values of plasma glutamic pyruvate transferase activity showed no significantly different among all the treatment groups. 6. Contents of plasma and liver total cholesterol showed a tendency to decrease in $LR_3$ acupuncture groups. However those of the other groups showed no significantly different. 7. In the contents of plasma LDL-cholesterol, $LR_3$ acupuncture groups were a lower values than other groups, however among the other groups showed no significantly different. The contents of plasma HDL-cholesterol showed a tendency to increase in the acupuncture groups, however these values showed no significantly different.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the most common causes of death in elderly Koreans, and HDL-cholesterol is known to have a pivotal role in protecting against CVD. This study was undertaken to study the relationships between plasma HDL-cholesterol levels and dietary, anthropometric, and biochemical factors in elderly Koreans. The 102 subjects, who were over 60 years old, were classified into two groups based on their plasma HDL-cholesterol levels: a risk group with plasma HDL-cholesterol < 40mg/dl in men or HDL-cholesterol < 50mg/d1 in women, and a control group with higher HDL-cholesterol levels. The subjects' mean intakes of energy, calcium, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin $B_2$, vitamin E, and folate did not meet the Korean RDA for elderly people. Vitamin $B_2$ and folate intakes were significantly lower (p<0.l) in the risk group compared to the control group. The consumption of seaweed was significantly lower (p<0.05), and fish intake was 33% lower, in the risk group compared to the control group. Subjects in the risk group showed a higher BMI, waist/hip ratio, triceps skinfold thickness, and % body fat, compared to control subjects. Plasma triglyceride levels and values of the atherogenic index were significantly higher (p<0.00l) in risk group subjects. Significant negative correlations between HDL-cholesterol level and plasma triglyceride level (r= 0.37), and values of the atherogenic index (r=-0.74), were found. In summary, subjects with low levels of HDL-cholesterol were found to have relatively low intakes of vitamin B$_2$, folate, and seaweed, and higher levels of the CVD risk factors: body fat, plasma TG, and AI. These results suggest that plasma HDL-cholesterol levels can be modified by dietary, anthropometric, and hematological means.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a butanol fraction of fraction of Alisma canaliculatum All. Braun et Bouche (Ac), and of selenium (Se), on plasma gllucose and lipid levee in streptozotocin (STD-induced diabetic rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats, fed the AIN-93 recommended diet, were divided into five groups: a non-diabetic control group (no STZ treatment), and four 572-induced diabetic groups which consisted of a diabetic-control group, an Ac-treated group, an Ac-Se treated group, and a Se-treated group. Diabetes was induced in the rats by an injection of STZ into the tail vein at a dose of 45 mg/kg body weight. The butanol (BuOH) fraction of Ac was orally administered at a rate of 400 mg/kg body weight for 21 days to both the Ac and Ac-Se groups. The supplementation of selenium in the Se and Ac-Se groups was achieved by adding (freshly, every day) 2 mg of Se as Na$_2$SeO$_3$ per kg of feed. The rats'body weights and hematocrit (Hct) levels were measured, along with plasma levels of glucose, insulin, cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), and free fatty acids (FFA). Aminotransferase activities were also analyzed. The non-diabetic rats gained weight, while the diabetic rats lost weight - except in the Ac-Se group, which maintained their initial weight. The blood glucose levels of the Ac group and the Se group were significantly lower than for the diabetic-control group. The plasma triglyceride levels were lowered when both Ac and Se were administered to diabetic rats. The concentrations of plasma FFA in the Ac-Se group were significantly lower compared with the diabetic-control group. Plasma cholesterol levels and alanine aminotransferase activity in the Ac, Ac-Se, and Se groups were significantly lower when compared with the diabetic-control group. Aspartate aminotransferase activity was significantly lower in the Se group compared to the other diabetic groups. These data show that treatment with a butanol fraction of Ac in combination with Se has no synergistic effect. Plasma glucose levels tended to be low when Se was administered to diabetic rats. Supplementation of Se in diabetic rats did not elicit a significant increase in plasma insulin levels or result in hypolipemic effects.
This study was performed to investigate the influence of dietary and extract foods from A. capilliaris Thunberg on plasma and liver lipid metabolism in male Sprague-Dawley rats. For the experiment of liver and plasma lipid metabolism, Rats were find diets containing normal concentrations of fat or high concentrations of lard and two different preparations of A. capillaris Thunberg ; control diet (group C),50 mg/kg body weight A. capillary Thunberg methanol extract (group M), 6 g/kg diet A. capillary Thunberg dried powder (group P), high lard control diet (group L), 50 mg/kg body weight A. capillaris Thunberg with high lard (group LM) and 6 g/kg diet A. capillary Thunberg with hi\ulcorner lard (group LP). Effects of A. capillary Thunberg on plasma total cholesterol. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, Atherogenic index, triglyceride, plasma and liver peroxide contents, fatty acid composition of liver lipid and the distribution of fat droplets of liver. Supplementation of A. capillaris Thunberg resulted in lower plasma cholesterol, atherogenic index and triglyceride, and higher HDL-cholesterol in rats find high lard diets. However, these effects were not observed with low level of fat (groups C, M and P). A shift caused by feeding high lard diets in increased plasma and liver peroxides, saturated fatty arid composition of liver lipid and the more frequent distribution of fat droplets in liver could be reversed by feeding A. capillary Thunberg. This study suggests that A. capillary Thunberg co alter lipid metabolism in plasma and liver.
Rat lipoprotein-deficient plasma possessed a lipid tramsfer inhibitory activity when it was added to purified human plasma lipid transfer protien, while it lacked a lipid transfer activity. Incubation of whole rat plasma with partially purified human lipid transfer protein resulted in big changes in lipid distribution of rat plasma lipoproteins. There w was a 4-fold increase in cholesteryl ester(CE) and 4 47 % reduction in triglyceride(TG) in very low density lipoproteins after 2싹lour incubation. In high density lipoprotein $2(HDL_2)$ there was a 9fold increase in TG and 33 % reduction in CEo HDL3 had 82 % reduction in CE. The result indic cates that the absence of the lipid transfer activity in rat plasma can be ascribed not to the inability of rat lipoproteins to serve as substrates but to the lack of 야Ie lipid transfer protein in rat plasma. The erefore, species differences in lipid transfer betwee en lipoproteins should be taken into consideration to interpret results of studies on lipoprotein m.etab bolism using rats.
We investigated dietary effects of prickly pear cactus (Opuntina ficus-indica) on plasma lipids, platelet aggregation (PA), hemolysis, plasma TBARS and liver enzymes. Twenty eight volunteer diving women in Jeju island had daily 20 g cactus tea containing 27% prickly pear cactus (PPC) powder for 4 weeks, and data for the study subjects were analyzed, on the basis of diagnostic criteria for blood pressure (BP)(${\geq}$ 140/90 mmHg), plasma cholesterol (${\geq}$ 200 mg/dL) and triglyceride (${\geq}$ 150 mg/dL). The subjects with higher BP had higher plasma total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) concentrations than those with normal BP. Those with higher TC also had higher TG. Subjects with normal BP or normal TC had higher initial slope of PA than their higher counterpart in BP and TC. PPC intake decreased plasma TG in those with higher BP. PPC intake significantly decreased the elevated initial slope in groups with normal BP, TC, and TG. Hemolysis after PPC intake decreased significantly in all the subjects and plasma TBARS decreased in the subjects with higher plasma TC and higher TG. Glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) significantly increased and total bilirubin significantly decreased in all the subjects after PPC intake. The present study with diving women showed that beneficial effects of short term intake of prickly pear cactus might differ depending on the subject conditions in term of blood pressure, and plasma lipids. However, long term usage of prickly pear cactus may provide preventive effects of cardiovascular diseases to all the population, presumably by hypolipidemic, antithrombotic, and antioxidant actions of its bioactive flavonoids and soluble fiber.
