The surface chemical structure of three kinds of polyethylene (PE): high density (HD) PE, low density (LD) PE and linear (L)-LDPE exposed to Ar and $O_2$ plasmas has been investigated using XPS. Oxygen was incorporated in a more increased amount for HDPE than for L-LDPE and LDPE. Ar plasma tended to incorporate more oxygen than $O_2$ plasma. The XPS valence band spectra for Ar plasma exhibited a clear peak assigned to $O_2$s character. By chemical derivatization method it was found that the amount of -COOH group at the surface was much greater than that of -OH group. The hydrophilic nature of plasma-treated PE increased in the order: LDPE

Wear characteristic of the nitrided SKD61 which is a typical mold material using for the extrusion of Al6061 alloy was investigated. The surface of SKD61 was nitrided by salt bath and plasma processes. The thickness of surface nitride layer was about $8.9{\mu}m{\sim}21.3{\mu}m$. Reciprocating friction wear test conducted using pin on disk type indicated the plasma treatment followed salt bath has a lower friction coefficient and a smaller adhesive wear with Al6061 alloy. That was identified by the $Fe_4N$ which has a better wear resistance than FeN mainly formed by plasma nitriding.
Physico-chemical changes of the plasma modified titanium alloy [Ti-6Al-4V] surface were studied with respect to their crystallographic changes by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).The plasma-treatment of surface was carried out to enhance adhesion of high performance nano reinforced epoxy adhesive, a phenomenon that was manifested in subsequent experimental results. The enhancement of adhesion as a consequence of improved spreading and wetting on metal surface was studied by contact angle (sessile drop method) and surface energy determination, which shows a distinct increase in polar component of surface energy. The synergism in bond strength was established by analyzing the lap-shear strength of titanium laminate. The extent of enhancement in thermal stability of the dispersed nanosilica particles reinforced epoxy adhesive was studied by Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), which shows an increase in onset of degradation and high amount of residuals at the high temperature range under study. The fractured surfaces of the joint were examined by Scanning electron microscope (SEM).

The ICP-CVD (inductively coupled plasma chemical vapor deposition) process was applied to the deposition of $TiB_2$ films. For plasma generation, 13.56 MHz r.f. power was supplied to 2-turn Cu coil placed inside chamber. And the gas mixture of $TiCl_4,\;BCl_3,\;H_2$ and Ar was used for $TiB_2$ deposition. $TiB_2$ films with high hardness (<40 GPa) were obtained at extremely low deposition temperature $(250^{\circ}C)$, and the films hardness increased with ICP power and gas flow ratio of $TiCl_4/BCl_3$. The film structure was changed from (100) preferred orientation to random orientation with increasing RF power. It is supposed that the enhanced hardness of films was caused by a strong Ti-B chemical bonding of stoichiometric $TiB_2$ films and film densification induced by high density plasma.

Silk fibers were subjected to argon and ethylene plasma treatments in order to improve the interfacial adhesion with polylactic acid (PLA). After the plasma surface treatment, the surface morphology and surface adhesion of silk fibers to the PLA resin were largely changed. Various plasma treatment conditions were used in this work: 10, 25, 50, 100 and 150 W of electric power, 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10 minutes of treatment time, and 10 and 50 sccm of a gas flow rate. The interfacial shear strength of plasma-treated Silk/PLA biocomposites was measured by a single fiber micro-droplet debonding test method. The result provided an optimal plasma treatment condition to obtain the improved interfacial adhesion in the Silk/PLA biocomposites.

In this study, the polycarbonate surface was treated by $O_2$/ Ar gases plasma for the enhancement of adhesion with Cu electrode. From the point of view of hydrophilicity and the functionality, the micro-roughness, new functional groups and oxygen content of the polycarbonate surface were increased by the $O_2$/ Ar gases plasma treatment. The Cu films deposited on the as-received polycarbonate were easily detached while, after the$ O_2$/ Ar gases plasma treatment the adhesive Cu films on polycarbonate could be obtained. These results can be explained that the polycarbonate had a hydrophilic surface with uniform micro-roughness and new functional groups by $O_2$/ Ar gases plasma treatment. Therefore,$O_2$/ Ar gases plasma treatment is a promising method for improvement of adhesion between polycarbonate and Cu electrode.

The ion implantation technology changes the chemical state of the surface of a material by implanting ions on the surface. It improves the wear resistance, friction characteristics, etc. Plasma ion implantation can effectively reinforce a surface by implanting a sufficient amount of plasma nitrogen ions and using the injection depth instead of an ion beam. As plasma ion implantation is a three-dimensional process, it can be applied even when the surface area is large and the surface shape is complicated. Furthermore, it is less expensive than competing PVD and CVD technologies. and the material is The accommodation range for the shape and size of the plasma is extremely large. In this study, we improved wear resistance by implanting plasma nitrogen ions into a carbide end mill tool, which is frequently used in high-speed machining

In this work, we describe the reduction kinetics of gold nanoparticles synthesized by plasma discharge in aqueous solutions with varied voltages and precursor (HAuCl4) concentrations. The reduction rate of [AuCl4]- was determined by introducing NaBr to the gold colloidal solution synthesized by plasma discharge, serving as a catalyst in the reduction process. We observed that [AuCl4]- was completely reduced when its characteristic absorption peak at 380 nm disappeared, indicating the absence of [AuCl4]- for ligand exchange with NaBr. The reduction rate notably increased with the rise in discharge voltage, attributable to the intensified plasma generated by ionization and excitation, which in turn accelerated the reduction kinetics. Regarding precursor concentration, a lower concentration was found to retard the reduction reaction, significantly influencing the reduction kinetics due to the presence of active H+ and H radicals. Therefore, the production of strong plasma with high plasma density was observed to enhance the reduction kinetics, as evidenced by optical emission spectroscopy.

para-aramid fibers were treated by atmosphere air plasma to improve the interfacial adhesion. The wettability of plasma-treated aramid fiber was observed by means of dynamic contact angle surface free energy measurement. Surface roughness were investigated with the help of scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The tensile test of aramid fiber roving was carried out to determine the effect of plasma surface treatments on the mechanical properties of the fibers. A pull-out force test was carried out to observe the interfacial adhesion effect with matrix material. It was found that surface modification and a chemical component ratio of the aramid fibers improved wettability and adhesion characterization. After oxygen plasma, it was indicated that modified the surface roughness of aramid fiber increased mechanical interlocking between the fiber surface and vinylester resin. Consequently the oxygen plasma treatment is able to improve fiber-matrix adhesion through excited functional group and etching effect on fiber surface.
It is still controversial where the improved stability of n-octadecyltriethoxysilane self-assembled monolayer (OTE SAM) on plasma-pretreated mica surface exactly originates from. To date, it has been well known that the extensive cross-polymerization between silane head-groups is a crucial factor for the outstanding mechanical strength of the monolayer. However, this study clearly showed that the stability comes not only from the cross-links but also, far more importantly, from the direct chemical bonds between silane headgroups and mica surface. To examine this phenomenon, n-octadecyltrichlorosilane monolayers were self-assembled on both untreated and plasma treated mica surfaces, and their adhesion properties at various physical conditions (relative humidity, high stress, and contact repetition) were investigated and compared through the use of the surface forces apparatus technique. It revealed that, in highly humid conditions (>90%RH), there is a substantial difference of stability between untreated and plasma treated cases and the plasma treated surface is mechanically much more stable. It obviously proves that the extensive chemical bonds indeed exist between silane head-groups and plasma treated mica surface and dramatically improve the mechanical stability of the OTE monolayer-coated mica substrate.
