In this study, the roots and rhizosphere soil of Abies koreana and Taxus cuspidata were collected from sites at two different altitudes on Mt. Halla. Ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) were identified by Illumina MiSeq sequencing. The proportion of EMF from the roots was 89% in A. koreana and 69% in T. cuspidata. Among EMF in rhizosphere soils, the genus Russula was the most abundant in roots of A. koreana (p < 0.05). The altitude did not affect the biodiversity of EMF communities but influenced fungal community composition. However, the host plants had the most significant effect on EMF communities. The result of the EMF community analysis showed that even if the EMF were isolated from the same altitudes, the EMF communities differed according to the host plant. The community similarity index of EMF in the roots of A. koreana was higher than that of T. cuspidata (p < 0.05). The results show that both altitude and host plants influenced the structure of EMF communities. Conifers inhabiting harsh sub-alpine environments rely strongly on symbiotic relationships with EMF. A. koreana is an endangered species with a higher host specificity of EMF and climate change vulnerability than T. cuspidata. This study provides insights into the EMF communities, which are symbionts of A. koreana, and our critical findings may be used to restore A. koreana.
Dictyostelid cellular slime molds were quantitatibly isolated from Korean lawngrass turf in Seoul National University, Korea, by the 'Clonal Isolation Technique(Cavender and Raper, 1965a)'. Total six species were found. These are Dictyostelium sphaerocephalum. D. purpuream. D. flavidam, D. crassica ale, Polysphondilium pallidum. P. violaceum. D. sphaerocephalum was the dominant species and P. violaceum, D. flaviidum, D. crassicaule were rare. Compared with other region, species diversity and species richness of Korean lawngrass turf appeared to he low. The dominant species, however, is not very common in other plant communities, so it cnay he characteristic of Korean lawngrass turf.
Background: Abandoned coal piles after the closure of mines have a potential negative influence on the environment, such as soil acidification and heavy metal contamination. Therefore, revegetation by efficient species is required. For this, we wanted to identify the role of Silene acaulis in the succession of coal piles as a pioneer and a nurse plant. S. acaulis is a well-studied cushion plant living in the Arctic and alpine environments in the northern hemisphere. It has a highly compact cushion-like form and hosts more plant species under its canopy by ameliorating stressful microhabitats. In this research, we surveyed vegetation cover on open plots and co-occurring species within S. acaulis cushions in coal piles with different slope aspects and a control site where no coal was found. The plant cover and the similarity of communities among sites were compared. Also, the interaction effects of S. acaulis were assessed by rarefaction curves. Results: S. acaulis was a dominant species with the highest cover (6.7%) on the coal piles and occurred with other well-known pioneer species. Plant communities on the coal piles were significantly different from the control site. We found that the pioneer species S. acaulis showed facilitation, neutral, and competition effect in the north-east facing slope, the south-east facing slope, and the flat ground, respectively. This result was consistent with the stress gradient hypothesis because the facilitation only occurred on the north-east facing slope, which was the most stressed condition, although all the interactions observed were not statistically significant. Conclusions: S. acaulis was a dominant pioneer plant in the succession of coal piles. The interaction effect of S. acaulis on other species depended on the slope and its direction on the coal piles. Overall, it plays an important role in the succession of coal piles in the High Arctic, Svalbard.

The actual vegetation and environmental impact grade of Daekwanrim in Hamyang were investigated and the structure of the plant community was analyzed by the classification of TWINSPAN and three kinds of multivariate ordination (PCA, RA, DCA) techniques.Twenty-eight plots were set up by the clumped sampling method in June of 1990. Carpinus laxiflora and C. tschonoskii communities covered 38% and Quercus species communities covered 39% of the total rea. Environmental impact class 3 and 4 area. Twenty-eight plots were divided into three groups according to the degree of damage by TWINSPAN and ordination techniques. The dominant species in the shrub layer of the heavily damaged site and the light damaged site were Styrax japonica and Sasamorpha purporanscens, so the sucessional trends should be disturbed. As a result of the analysis for the relationship between the stand scores of DCA and the environmental impact class, they had a tendancy to increase from the light damaged to heavily damaged site.
Two types in the species-importance, one type of carpinus laxiflora, carpinus tschonoskii, quercus serrata, quercus grosseserrata and pnus densiflora community and another type of abeies koreana community classified by zurich-montpellier method, were recognized based on the data from 81 sample plots. The forme species sequence-importance curves were coincidred with the ideal curve calculated by preston's lognormal-distribution theory(1948), with small variations among five communities, and the latter with that of motomura's niche pre-emption hypothesis(1932). It seems that plant community classified by phytosociological method based on the unit concept coincide with the vegetation type recognized by species population analyse based on the continuum concept and the dominance-diversity reflrcts on the difference in the coenocline among their plant communities.
Mt. paektu(altitude 2,749.6m) is ecologically important because successional processes following volcanic eurption are quite clear. We investigated plant communities with altitude know vertical distribution of plant vegetation on the north-western slope of Mt. paektu was divided into five parts; the pine-hardwood forest zone(600∼1,000m alt.), the lower coniferous forest zone (1,000∼1,500 m alt.), the upper coniferous forest and birch forest zone(1,500∼2,000 m alt.), the alpine shrub zone(2,000∼2,500 m alt.) and the alpine meadow zone(2,500∼2,749 m alt.). In particular, the alpine zone was divided into alpine shrub and alpine meadow zones and distributed up to 2,500m alt. these results reflet the adaptations of these shrubs at this altitude. But these shrubby communities disappeared on the alpinemeadow zone. In the alpine meadow zone above than 2,500m alt., some meadows, papaver radicatum var pscudoradicatum. bistorta ochotensis, chrysathemum zawadskii var. latilobum etc., were occured.
To evaluate the effect of reed population on the distribution and activities of microorganisms, vertical distribution of heterotrophic bacteria, degradation rate of cellulose, extracellular aminopeptidase activity (APA) and metabolic diversity based on GN2 Microlog plate were measured at two salt marsh stations in Hogok-ri, Namyang Bay, west coast of Korea. The number of heterotrophic bacteria at station 1 (reed population inhabited area) showed 2 to 6 times higher than that of station 2 (exposed area) with exception in the surface layer. Cellulose degradation rates in station 1 showed more than 50%. month-I and higher than that of station 2 (10.2 to 38.4%. $month^{-1}$). Yet the APA at two stations did not show difference except surface layer and suggested that APA might not be a significant factor in degrading marsh plant debris. Lipid class compounds, cell wall polymers and L-alanine were widely used by microorganisms. The number and activities of bacterial populations especially concerned in plant debris degradation seemed to be stimulated by the reed communities.
In this sampling obtained 7,108 measurements for all trees larger than 2.5cm (1.0 inch) dbh from seven stands in Kwhangnung. In terms of similarity indices seven stands are classified into three kind of forest coniferous, mixed, and broadleaved froest communiteis. For ten major tree species in a three forest communities the size distributions are studied. Two forms of size distributions were observed: (1) linear relationships of log numbers of stem vs. size indicating stablesize distributions; (2) convex to bell shaped size distributions reflecting declining populaitons with a low natality rate. Survivorship analyses showed that successional trends seem to be: Pinus densilfloralongrightarrowQuercus aliena and Q. serratalongrightarrowCarpinus laxifloralongrightarrowC. erosalongrightarrowAcer pseudo-sieboldianum var. Koreanum. These results agree with the results from ordination method. An alternate pathways that Pinus koraiensis seems to be replaced by C. laxiflora were observed. It seems that successional trend is not unidireciton, but rather multi-directional.
Intertidal algal communities of Muchangpo and Maryangri in western coast of Korea were investigated qualitatively and quantitatively. Seasonal assessments of species composition, biomass, dominant species in biomass and vertical distributional pattern were conducted from July 1986 to April 1988. Ninety-nine species of marine algae (13 Cyanophyta, 12 Chlorophyta, 24 Phaeophyta and 50 Rhodophyta) were observed, of which 90 (13 Cyanophyta, 11 Chlorophyta, 23 Phaeophyta and 43 Rhodophyta) were from Muchangpo and 83 (10 Cyanophyta, 11 Chlorophyta, 21 Phaeophyta and 41 Rhodophyta) were from Maryangri, respectively. Ordination by detrended correspondence analysis based on the floristic data from nine localities indicated that, on the whole, marine algal distribution in western coast of Korea might be divided into two regions, i.e. the north and the south, being separated at the Taean Peninsula, the mid-western coast. Seasonal fluctuations of mean biomass were 44.55-201.19g-dry wt/$m^2$ at Muchangpo and 19.59-134.76g-dry wt/$m^2$ at Maryangri. Important species determined by the specific proportion of biomass were Sargassum thunbergii, Pelvetia siliquosa and Corallina pilulifera at Muchangpo, and Sargassum thunbergii and Corallina pilulifera at Maryangri.
Lichen communities at the Duckyoo National Park were studied by the analysis of concentration. Thirty three species of lichen identified were divided into three vegetational groups and fourty two stands into three environmental groups by sum of square algorithm. The sharpness of the nine blocks table is low, that is C=0.05, which means the divergency of lichen communities to be high. The result reveals that canonical first variate is 0.313 (91%) and second variate 0.100 (9%), and calculates the expected deviation from the first variate. The intermediate zone of environmental group is more important area to distribute lichen species than other zone. The computer program for this study was made by APPLE SOFT BASIC (DOS 3.3).
