  • Empirical criteria for wave breaking on the coastal slope are substantiated theoretically for complex-shape basins. The theory developed here is a generalization of Carrier-Greenspan theory for a plane beach. The place and role of the linear theory for the description of run-up problem is discussed. The height of run-up on the beach of the basins with a “parabolic” profile is calculated for originally monochromatic wave.

  • Effect of a finite square substrate plane on the radiation characteristics of a microstrip patch antenna is investigated. Effect of a finite square substrate plane on the resonance frequency and bandwidth is very small, while that on the radiation pattern is very large. The gain of front radiation and the direction of the maximum gain vary almost periodically with the length of a square substrate plane. The length of a square substrate plane for the maximum gam and the minimum gain of front radiation decrease as the electrical thickness of a substrate increases. The variation of the gain of front radiation with the length of a square substrate plane increases as the electrical thickness of a substrate increases. The variation of the radiation pattern with the length of a square substrate plane is almost determined by the electrical thickness of a substrate.

  • Acoustic holography makes it possible to reconstruct the acoustic field based on the measurement of the pressure distribution on the hologram surface. Because of the merit that one can obtain an entire three-dimensional wave field from the data recorded on a two-dimensional surface, the holographic method has been widely studied. Being an experimental method, holography has an unavoidable error which is generate by sampling in space and frequency domain and finite aperture size. Its magnitude is dependent on the space and frequency domain and finite aperture size. Its magnitude is dependent on the shape of hologram surface, acoustic holography may be classified into four types of holography : rectangular type planeholography, circular type plane holography, cylindrical holography and spherical holography. In this paper, four types of holography are studied by modal summation method. Numerical simulation is performed using a monopole source with varying parameters to find out effects to the estimation error in each holography. Experiments of circular type plane holography and cylindrical holography explain strong relation between the shape of hologram surface and the acoustic field.

  • We analyzed fault plane solutions of the recent twenty-two earthquakes which occurred from 2004 to 2006 in the central part of the Korean Peninsula by using P- and S-wave polarities along with SH/P amplitude ratios. The fault plane solution shows that strike-slip fault is dominant here, especially for the events with local magnitude equal to or greater than 3.0. However, some events with local magnitude less than 3.0 show normal fault or strike-slip fault with normal components. In the case of strike-slip fault, its orientation is almost in the direction of NNE-SSW to NE-SW almost parallel to the general trend of faults, while the compressional axis of the stress field trends ENE to E-W. The result is almost consistent with the stress field in and around the Korean peninsula, as reported previously. We cannot give any appropriate explanations to the normal faulting events along the western offshore and inland areas whether it is related to the local stress changes or tectonically unidentified extensional structures. Thus, an extension of investigations is desirable to clarify the cause of such phenomena.

  • Notch Antenna is a travelling wave type antenna and can provide multioctave operation in phased arrays that scan over wide angle. In this paper, we designed a wideband E-plane phased array antenna using E-plane waveguide simulator which has a bandwidth of 3 : 1 and a scan volume of $\pm$45$^{\circ}$ in E-plane. We compared impedance of single antenna and infinite array antenna using equivalent circuit modeling. We analyzed full structure of 1$\times$9 phased array antenna and we evaluated active reflection coefficient with variation of beam scan angle through mutual coupling coefficient acquired from simulation and investigated the variation of antenna gain with variation of active element pattern as beam scan angle is varied.

  • An analysis is made for flow and rocket motion during a supersonic separation stage of an air-launching rocket(ALR) from the mother plane. Three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations are numerically solved to analyze the steady/unsteady flow fields around the rocket which is being separated from the mother plane configuration(F-4E Phantom). Simulation results clearly demonstrate the effect of shock-expansion wave interaction around both of the rocket and the mother plane. To predict the behavior of the ALR by the change of the center-of-gravity, three cases of numerical analysis are performed. As a result, a design-guideline of supersonic air-launching rockets for safe separation is proposed.

  • In this study, we proposed a wideband frequency tunable metamaterial absorber using a switchable ground plane (SGP). We proposed two fire retardant or flame resistant 4 (FR4) substrate structures for the SGP. An SGP is placed at the middle layer, between the top pattern and the bottom ground plane. The SGP can either be made ground or reactive, by switching the PIN diode ON/OFF. As the frequency is determined by the substrate thickness, the frequency can be switched from the SGP. The proposed absorber is demonstrated by full-wave simulations and measurements. When the SGP is turned on, an absorptivity higher than 90% is achieved from 3.5 GHz to 11 GHz. When the SGP is turned off, an absorptivity higher than 90 % is achieved from 1.7 GHz to 5.2 GHz.

  • The size and surface effects on the magnetism of a fcc Fe (001) surface was investigated by performing firstprinciples calculations on 3, 5, 7, and 9 monolayers fcc Fe (001) single slabs with two different two-dimensional lattice constants, ${\alpha}=3.44{\AA}$ (System I) and 3.65 ${\AA}$ (System II), using the all-electron full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method within a generalized gradient approximation. The surface layers were coupled ferromagnetically to the subsurface layer in both systems. However, the magnetism of the inner layers was quite different from each other. While all the inner layers of System II were ferromagnetically coupled in the same way as the surface layer, the inner layers of System I showed a peculiar magnetism, bilayer antiferromagnetism. The calculated spin magnetic moments per Fe atom were approximately 2.7 and 2.9 ${\mu}_B$ at the surface for Systems I and II, respectively, due to the almost occupied Fe d-state being in the majority spin state and band narrowing. The spin orientations of System I were out-of-plane regardless of its thickness, whereas the orientation of System II changed from out-of-plane to in-plane with increasing thickness.

  • In this paper, we present a general model for synthetic transmit focusing method using plane waves (STF-PW) of which the properties are investigated through mathematical analysis and compared with those of the conventional focusing method. The analysis results show that STF-PW produces non-diffracting beams in the sense that their main lobe widths do not change with depth. We also present a method for synthesis of plane waves to obtain a desired main lobe width while preventing grating lobe generation and a method for broadening the region over which the non-diffracting property is maintained. The proposed model and analysis results were validated through computer simulations.
