An experimental study has been carried out to investigate an I-type sparger-performance in view of pressure oscillation and thermal mixing in a pool. Its pitch-to-hole diameter, P/D, varies from 2 to 5. The test conditions are restricted to the condensation oscillation regime. In the present study, two different hole patterns, staggered and parallel types, are employed under various test conditions. The amplitude of the pressure pulse shows a peak for pool temperatures of 45∼85$\^{C}$, which depends on P/D and the steam mass flux. The effect of hole pattern on the pressure load is smaller than that of P/D. The dominant frequency increases with the subcooling temperature of pool water and P/D. A correlation for the dominant frequency is proposed in terms of the pitch-to-hole diameter ratio and other dimensionless thermal hydraulic parameters.
In this paper we have investigated the guiding properties of photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with a square-lattice of air-holes in the cladding. We have shown numerical results of PCFs with various air hole sizes and hole-to-hole spacings over a wide wavelength range. The group velocity dispersion, effective area and effective refractive index of PCF have been calculated numerically. The waveguide dispersion has greatly affected the group velocity dispersion when hole-to-hole spacing is about $1{\mu}m$. The effective area is quite flat over the wide spectral range whether the hole-to-hole spacing is large or ratio of diameter to pitch is large. From the field distribution, we found that the field is tightly confined within the core region of PCF when the pitch is $3{\mu}m$ and the air-filling fraction is 0.9.

The present study is conducted to investigate the effect of rib arrangements on an impingement/effusion cooling system with initial crossflow. To simulate the impingement/effusion cooling system, two perforated plates are placed in parallel and staggered arrangements with a gap distance of 2 times of tile hole diameter. Initial crossflow passes between the injection and effusion plates, and the square ribs (3mm) are installed on the effusion plate. Both the injection and effusion hole diameters are 10mmand Reynolds number based on the hole diameter and hole-to-hole pitch are fixed to 10,000 and 6 times of the hole diameter, respectively. To investigate the effects of rib arrangements, various rib arrangements, such as 90$^{\circ}$transverse and 45$^{\circ}$angled rib arrangements, are used. Also, the effects of flow rate ratio of crossflow to impinging jets are investigated. With the initial crossflow, locally low transfer regions are formed because the wall jets are swept away, and level of heat transfer rate get decreased with increasing flow rate of crossflow. When the ribs are installed on the effusion plate, the local distributions of heat/mass transfer coefficients around the effusion holes are changed. The local heat/mass transfer around the stagnation regions and the effusion holes are affected by the rib positions, angle of attack and rib spacing. For low blowing ratio, the ribs have adverse effects on heat/mass transfer, but for higher blowing ratios, higher and more uniform heat transfer coefficient distributions are obtained than the case without ribs because the ribs prevent the wall jets from being swept away by the crossflow and increase local turbulence of the flow near the surface. Average heat transfer coefficients with rib turbulators are approximately 10% higher than that without ribs, and the higher values are obtained with small pitch of ribs. However, the attack angle of the rib has little influence on the average heat/mass transfer.

In this study, we carried out the finite element analysis for the screw of centrifuge that is the weakest part of the centrifuge for sewage management. Centrifugal force caused by rotation with velocity of 4000rpm was applied at the screw. Structural analysis was done with respect to the change of the ratio of blade pitch($R_P$), shaft diameter($R_D$) and extended hole($R_E$). When the area of circular hole is equal to that of extended holes, maximum equivalent stresses in the screw with circular and extended circular hole were compared. And then natural frequency analysis was executed for the same model. Three mode shapes were used to explain the vibration characteristics of each screw. Convergence study was accomplished fur more accurate results.

The present study investigates the effects of bleed flow on heat/mass transfer and pressure drop in a rotating channel with transverse rib turbulators. The hydraulic diameter ($D_h$) of the square channel is 40.0 mm. The bleed holes are located between the rib turburators on leading surface and the hole diameter (d) is 4.5 mm. The square rib turbulators are installed on both leading and trailing surfaces. The rib-to-rib pitch is 10.0 times of the rib height (e) and the rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio ($e/D_h$) is 0.055. The tests were conducted at various rotation numbers (0, 0.2, 0.4), while the Reynolds number and the rate of bleed flow to main flow were fixed at 10,000 and 10%, respectively. The results suggest that the heat/mass transfer characteristics in the internal cooling passage are influenced by rib turbulators, bleed flow and the Cariolis force induced by rotation. For the rotating ribbed passage with bleed flow, the heat/mass transfer on the leading surface is hardly affected by bleed flow, but that on the trailing surface decreases due to the diminution of main flow. The results also show that the friction factor decreases with the bleed flow.

A numerical study is carried out to analyze the steady three-dimensional turbulent flow through cylindrical and fan-shaped holes and the film cooling of these holes at low and high blowing ratios. Compressible Reynoldsaveraged Navier-Stokes equations and the energy equation are solved using a finite-volume-based solver, and a shearstress transport model is used as the turbulence closure. The effects of the compound angle, pitch to diameter ratio, and lateral expansion angle of the hole on the film-cooling effectiveness are evaluated by the film-cooling effectiveness. It is observed that the compound angle of the hole enhances the film performance for the cylindrical hole, and a small hole pitch induces interactions between the coolants from the adjacent holes, thus reducing the film-cooling performance.
With the wide applications of fiber-reinforced composite material in aero-structures and mechanical parts, the design of composite joints have become a very important research area because the joints are often the weakest areas in composite structures. This paper presents an analytical study of the stress distributions in mechanically single-fastened and multi-fastened composite laminates. The finite element models which treat the pin and hole contact problem using a contact stress analysis are described. A dimensionless stress concentration factor is used to compare the stress distributions in composite laminates quantitatively In the case of single-pin loaded composite laminate, the effects of stacking sequence, the ratio of a hole diameter and the width of a laminate (W/D ratio), the ratio of hole diameter and distance from edge to hole (E/D ratio), friction coefficient and clamping force are considered. In the case of multi-pin loaded composite laminate, the influence of the number of pins, pitch distance, number of rows, row spacing and hole pattern are considered. The results show that P/D ratio and E/D ratio affect more on stress distributions near the hole boundary than the other factors. In the case of multi-pin loaded composite laminate, the stress concentration in the double column case is better than the other cases of multi-pin loaded composite laminate.

The present study investigates the effects of bleed flow on heat/mass transfer and pressure drop in a rotating channel with transverse rib turbulators. The hydraulic diameter $(D_h)$ of the square channel is 40.0mm. The bleed holes are located between the rib turbulators on leading surface and the hole diameter (d) is 4.5 mm. The square rib turbulators are installed on both leading and trailing surfaces. The rib-to-rib pitch is 10.0 times of the rib height(e) and the rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio $(e/D_h)$ is 0.055. The tests were conducted at various rotation numbers (0, 0.2, 0.4), while the Reynolds number and the rate of bleed flow to main flow (BR) were fixed at 10,000 and $10\%$, respectively. The results suggest that the heat/mass transfer characteristics in the internal cooling passage are influenced by rib turbulators, bleed flow and the Coriolis force induced by rotation. For the rotating ribbed passage with bleed flow, the heat/mass transfer on the leading surface is hardly affected by bleed flow, but that on the trailing surface decreases due to the diminution of main flow. The results also show that the friction factor decreases with the bleed flow.
This paper presented an experimental modal analysis of clamped perforated rectangular plates submerged in water. The penetration of holes in the plates had a triangular pattern with P/D (pitch to diameter) 1.750, 2.125, 2.500, 3.000 and 3.750. The natural frequencies of the perforated plates in air were obtained by the Rayleigh-Ritz method and compared with the experimental results. Good agreement was obtained between the analytical solution and experimental result. The experimental results in water showed that the mode shapes are not sensitive to the depth of submergence. The natural frequencies were shown to decrease drastically once the perforated plates come in contact with water. However, the natural frequencies decrease with the depth of submergence until a certain depth is reached, and become the asymptotic values beyond this depth of submergence. The depth of submergence did not affect the damping ratio greatly.
