  • A numerical study for three-dimensional laminar flow in the entrance region of helical tubes connected with straight ones is carried out to investigate the effects of Reynolds number, pitch and curvature ratio on the oscillation periods of the flow. The fully elliptic governing equations were solved by means of a finite volume method. The fully developed laminar flow boundary condition was applied at the straight tube inlet. This results cover a curvature ratio range of 1/10${\sim}$1/320, a pitch range of 0.0${\sim}$3.2, and a Reynolds number range of 62.5${\sim}$2000. A comparison is made with previous experimental correlations and numerical data. The developments of velocity, local and average friction factors are discussed. The average friction factors are oscillatory in the entrance region of helical pipes. It has been found that the angle required for the flow to be similarly developed is most affected by the curvature ratio. The pitch and Reynolds number do not have any significant effect on the angle. The characteristic angle ${\phi}_c(={\phi}/sqrt{\delta})$, or the characteristic length to diameter ratio $s_c(=l\sqrt{\delta} cos(atan{\lambda})/d)$, can be useful to represent the development of flow in helical tubes. As the pitch increases and as the curvature ratio and Reynolds number decrease, the amplitude and the number of flow oscillations along the main streamwise direction decrease.

  • Flow channels with non-circular cross-sections are encountered in a wide variety of heat exchangers. Accurate friction factor and Colburn j factor data are essential for the design and viable applications of such heat exchangers. In this study, an analysis is con ducted on heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics for tube-bundle heat exchanger with various arrangements of tubes, of which their geometry could easily be modified from a circular one in a harsh environment. The parameters investigated are aspect ratio, pitch, and inclined angle of tubes. The results obtained are: (1) Aspect ratio has larger influence on the j and f factor than pitch; (2) As aspect ratio increases, both j and f factors decrease; (3) The high performance is achieved when the pitch and aspect ratio are in the range of 1.5${\~}$2.5 and 1.25${\~}$2.0, respectively; and (4) the inclined arrangements of tubes show unfavorable results for both heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics in spite of the positive possibility of condensate removals in a latent heat recovery system.

  • A cost-effective and simple solder on pad (SoP) process is proposed for a fine-pitch microbump interconnection. A novel solder bump maker (SBM) material is applied to form a 60-${\mu}m$ pitch SoP. SBM, which is composed of ternary Sn3.0Ag0.5Cu (SAC305) solder powder and a polymer resin, is a paste material used to perform a fine-pitch SoP through a screen printing method. By optimizing the volumetric ratio of the resin, deoxidizing agent, and SAC305 solder powder, the oxide layers on the solder powder and Cu pads are successfully removed during the bumping process without additional treatment or equipment. Test vehicles with a daisy chain pattern are fabricated to develop the fine-pitch SoP process and evaluate the fine-pitch interconnection. The fabricated Si chip has 6,724 bumps with a 45-${\mu}m$ diameter and 60-${\mu}m$ pitch. The chip is flip chip bonded with a Si substrate using an underfill material with fluxing features. Using the fluxing underfill material is advantageous since it eliminates the flux cleaning process and capillary flow process of the underfill. The optimized bonding process is validated through an electrical characterization of the daisy chain pattern. This work is the first report on a successful operation of a fine-pitch SoP and microbump interconnection using a screen printing process.

  • Coal-tar pitch, a feedstock which can be heat-treated to create graphite, is composed of very complex molecules. Coal-tar pitch is a precursor of many useful carbon materials (e.g., graphite, carbon fibers, electrodes and matrices of carbon/carbon composites). Modified coal-tar pitch (MCTP) was prepared using two different heat-treatment methods and their properties were characterized and compared. One was prepared using heat treatment in nitrogen gas; the other was prepared under a pressure of 350 mmHg in air. The MCTPs were investigated to determine several properties, including softening point, C/H ratio, coke yield, formation of anisotropic mesophase and viscosity. The MCTPs were subject to considerable changes in chemical composition due to condensation and polymerization in the used-as-received coal-tar pitch after heat-treatment under different conditions. The MCTPs showed considerable increases in softening point, C/H ratio, and coke yield, compared to those of as-received coal-tar pitch. The MCTP formed by heat-treatment in nitrogen showed isotropic phases below $350^{\circ}C$ for 1 h of soaking time. However, MCTP heat-treated under high pressure (350 mmHg) showed isotropic phases below $300^{\circ}C$, and showed anisotropic phases above $350^{\circ}C$, for 1 h of soaking time. The viscosity of the MCTPs increased with increase in their softening points.

  • Experimental investigations of the heat transfer and friction factors in the ribbed divergent rectangular channel with the channel exit hydraulic diameter to inlet hydraulic diameter ratio of 1.16 were performed. The surface heaters were mounted onto the two opposite walls. The main experimental parameter is the ratio of rib pitch (p) to height (e), at which the ratios (p/e) of 6, 10, and 14 are considered in the channel with ribs on one wall only. The straight ribbed square channel is also considered as a comparison. The major findings are that the ratio of p/e = 6 shows the highest values in the heat transfer and the ratio of p/e = 10 indicates the greatest friction factor in the ribbed divergent channel. Editor's note:No major changes or corrections needed. Well written.

  • The lithium ion battery has applied to various fields of energy storage systems such as electric vehicle and potable electronic devices in terms of high energy density and long-life cycle. Despite of various research on the electrode and electrolyte materials, there is a lack of research for investigating of the binding materials to replace polymer based binder. In this study, we have investigated petroleum pitch/polymer composite with various ratios between petroleum pitch and polymer in order to optimize the electrochemical and physical performance of the lithium-ion battery based on petroleum pitch/polymer composite binder. The electrochemical and physical performances of the petroleum pitch/polymer composite binder based lithium-ion battery were evaluated by using a charge/discharge test, cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and universal testing machine (UTM). As a result, the petroleum pitch(MP-50)/polymer(PVDF) composite (5:5 wt % ratio) binder based lithium-ion battery showed 1.29 gf mm-1 of adhesion strength with 144 mAh g-1 of specific dis-charge capacity and 93.1 % of initial coulombic efficiency(ICE) value.

  • The fluidization characteristics of the furan foundry sand fluidized bed and the heat transfer characteristics on a single spiral coil tube in the bed have been investigated. In the paper, the heat transfer coefficients for a single spiral coil tube are measured in the furan foundry sand bed as a function of the ratio of heated coil tube pitch to diameter(p/Do) and the ratio of heated coil tube pitch to particle size(p/dp). The experimental results are as follows. 1) Mean heat transfer coefficients increases according to the increasing ratio of heated coil tube pitch to diameter(p/Do). 2) The Increasing rates of mean Nusselt numbers are more greater in the case of p/Do=1.58 than p/Do=4.75. 3) Mean Nusselt number can be expressed by the following equation, $Nu_{mean}=C\;Re^m\;Pr_g^{0.4}(p/dp)^n$.

  • In speech signal processing, it is necessary to estimate exactly the pitch. We propose a new algorithm which uses the correlation coefficient between the original and the repeated segmental waveform in the frame as a parameter in the pitch extraction. The correlation coefficient in the frame reflects the periodic component and the transient ratio of the waveform.

  • Traditionally, tire made a role of function, which is supporting vehicle load, making brake, transferring, traction etc. So, there are a lot of studying for the tire. especially, tire noise is one of the most important parameter in the car noise. this thesis shows the method how to reduce the tire noise by using the optimal pitch sequence. Because the optimal pitch sequence prevents tire from generating the pure tone while driving the car on the ground.

  • An experimental study has been carried out to investigate an I-type sparger-performance in view of pressure oscillation and thermal mixing in a pool. Its pitch-to-hole diameter, P/D, varies from 2 to 5. The test conditions are restricted to the condensation oscillation regime. In the present study, two different hole patterns, staggered and parallel types, are employed under various test conditions. The amplitude of the pressure pulse shows a peak for pool temperatures of 45∼85$\^{C}$, which depends on P/D and the steam mass flux. The effect of hole pattern on the pressure load is smaller than that of P/D. The dominant frequency increases with the subcooling temperature of pool water and P/D. A correlation for the dominant frequency is proposed in terms of the pitch-to-hole diameter ratio and other dimensionless thermal hydraulic parameters.
