  • The artificial ground freezing (AGF) method is a groundwater cutoff and/or ground reinforcement method suitable for constructing underground structures in soft ground and urban areas. The AGF method conducts a freezing process by employing a refrigerant circulating through a set of embedded freezing pipes to form frozen walls serving as excavation supports and/or cutoff walls. However, thermal expansion of the pore water during freezing may cause excessive deformation of the ground. On the other hand, as the frozen soil is thawed after completion of the construction, mechanical characteristics of the thawed soil are changed due to the plastic deformation of the ground and the rearrangement of soil fabric. This paper performed a field experiment to evaluate the freezing rate of marine clay in the application of the AGF method. The field experiment was carried out by circulating liquid nitrogen, which is a cryogenic refrigerant, through one freezing pipe installed at a depth of 3.2 m in the ground. Also, a piezo-cone penetration test (CPTu) and a lateral load test (LLT) were performed on the marine clay before and after application of the AGF method to evaluate a change in strength and stiffness of it, which was induced by freezing-thawing. The experimental results indicate that about 11.9 tons of liquid nitrogen were consumed for 3.5 days to form a cylindrical frozen body with a volume of about $2.12m^3$. In addition, the strength and stiffness of the ground were reduced by 48.5% and 22.7%, respectively, after a freezing-thawing cycle.

  • An experimental study was performed to measure a ice concentration of ice slurry flowing in a pipe in a real time. In the present paper, we suggested a measuring method by a refractive index and compared it to other methods by a freezing point and a density. To measure the refractive index of the solution, ice particles in the ice slurry should be completely removed and a hydro-cyclone was introduced instead of a mesh. The measuring method through the refractive index coincided with the density method using the real-time solution density within ${\pm}5%$ error range, having the error range less than the other two methods. In the other hand, the measuring method through the density has a good resolution, but the result using the initial density of the solution was different more than 10% error from that using the real-time density. And it has an error range 1.5 times greater than the method through the refractive index.

  • A Construction of pipe line foundation and railroad, buildings in a permafrost area requires engineering technology of ground stabilization. In the permafrost area, thermal siphons have been used to stabilize foundation by eliminating the heat of ground to the air. the thermal siphon is a passive heat transfer device that operates by convection through vaporization and condensation. The heat transfer from ground to the air is driven by a temperature difference across the unit. A buried part in ground working as vaporizing function and upper part work as condensing. In this study, buried thermal siphon around the pipe lines laid in the Vladivostok site and measuring temperature variation. It is found that the thermal siphons freezing ground faster and decrease temperature variation in winter season.

  • A method to make ice spike using home refrigerator with ice tray was found. Many experiments have carried out with this method and many natural phenomena occurring on the formation of ice spike are found. A new concept of the Latter Freezing Water (LFW) was imported to explain the ice spike formation. At LFW position on water surface, the Sprout of Super cooled Water (SSW) grows by the Volume Expansion Effect (VEE) caused by the phase change of water in water. And air bubbles that are expelled from ice during freezing process, gather, rise, and detonate at the upper most part of SSW that make SSW freeze and grow upward with the water pipe in it. Together with VEE the capillarity in the water pipe makes the column grow more, that makes the ice spike. Many other findings were succeeded; 1) Ice spike process is completed before the whole water freezes. 2) If water is corrupted or shocked, even though it is very slight, ice spike is not generated. 3) Rain water contains the most LFW among all kind of waters used in experiments. 4) LFW is changed into normal water after passing the ice spike. 5) A new concept of the ice bullet is introduced. 6) The reason of frequent occurrences of the ice spike at Mt. Mai is investigated also.

  • This paper numerically examines, straight and twisted electrical heat trace installations for their anti-freezing effects on water inside a pipe. The unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with an energy equation were solved to compare the two installation methods. The heat conduction of the pipe with a heat source interacts with the natural convection of the water, and the conjugate heat transfer was considered using a commercial code (ANSYS-FLUENT) based on a SIMPLE-type algorithm. Numerical experiments, were done to investigate the isotherms and the vector fields in the water region to extract the evolutions of the minimum and maximum temperatures of the water inside the pipe. There was no substantial difference in the anti-freezing effects between the straight and twisted. Therefore, the straight installation is recommended after considering the damage and short circuit behavior of the electrical heat trace.

  • The repair of manhole raise has been caused much construction times and disruption of traffic flow, serious environmental pollution from crushed construction wastes, and budget waste due to the repeated repair construction works. In order to overcome such problems, we have developed the new manhole repairing composite structures by using a glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) pipe, which can raise manhole to the regular height of the overlayed road pavement with rapid construction and minimum traffic jams. This environmental-friendly technology is method completed by the methyl methacrylate monomer (MMA) double wide flanged GFRP pipe composite structures in order to raise manhole to the regular height. In this paper, two kinds of the compressive strength tests of MMA mortar composites were conducted and evaluated by a general compressive strength test, and compressive strength test after freezing-thawing resistance test. It was found that this MMA mortar composites will be used for the application of the double wide flanged GFRP pipe composite structures.

  • Pressure-controlled sodium heat pipe furnace was designed and fabricated, and its characteristics was investigated. Pressure control system was controlled within ${\pm}0.5\;Pa$ at 150 kPa and the stability of pressure was decreased to ${\pm}2.5\;Pa$, when the pressure-controlled system connected with the heat pipe. The melting curve of Ag fixed-point realized well by the adiabatic method using the pressure-controlled sodium heat pipe furnace and its accuracy showed ${\pm}2.27\;mK$ from the calculation of 20% to 80% at the plateau. The freezing curve of Ag fixed-point also realized and its plateau value was 2.23 mK lower than that of the melting curve.

  • Considering heat pipe design principles in fabrication and operational performances, water is one of the most recommended working fluids to make mid to low tempera lure heat pipes. But the conventional water heat pipes might encounter the failure in a cold start-up operation when socked at a chilling temperature lower than the freezing point. If they are subjected to a heat supply for start-up at a temperature around $-20^{\circ}C$, the rate of the vapor flow and the corresponding heat transfer from the evaporator to the condenser is so small that the vapor keeps to stick on the surface of the chilling condenser wall, forming an ice layer, resulting in a liquid deficiency in the evaporator. This kind of problems was resolved by Kang et al. in 2004 by adopting a gas loading heat pipe technology to the conventional water heat pipes. This study was conducted to examine a chilling start-up procedure of gas loading heat pipes by investigating the behaviors of heat pipe wall temperatures. And the thermal resistance of the gas loaded heat pipe that depends on the operating temperatures and heat loads was measured and examined. Two water heat pipes were designed and fabricated for the comparison of performances, one conventional and the other loaded with $N_2$ gas. They were put on start-up test at a heat supply of 30 W after having been socked at an initial temperature around $-20^{\circ}C$. It was observed that the gas loaded one had succeeded in chilling start-up operation.
