  • Architectural & Interior design communication is a process of exchanging information between architects and other professionals, clients, and prospectus users, and a design medium is a means of communication. Using non-immersive, conventional media, it is challenging for architects communicate physical details and users' activities in not yet built three-dimensional buildings to others. Recent advances online, Multi-User Virtual Environments (MUVEs) allow architects and other professionals to experience a virtually constructed building together using anthropomorphic avatars. In addition, MUVEs also enable them to be aware of the presence and activity of each other. Previous studies suggest that the aforementioned characteristics of MUVEs may facilitate communication between architects and others. But these are focused on communication in controlled experimental conditions. This paper discusses the ways in which MUVEs are applied for authentic and long-term collaboration, design studio, and cultural heritage reconstruction projects, produced by digital design group at the UC Berkeley and the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, and analyzes the influences of MUVEs on those projects. MUVEs helped more precise communication between architects, electronic engineers, and medical staffs, who are collaborating for developing pioneering technology for hospitals. In design studios, MUVEs allowed students to experience other students' design outputs, and thus helped them share ideas mutually. In addition, in cultural heritage reconstruction projects, MUVEs were used for communicating with historians and residents in order to collect evidence. Based on this study, we propose that MUVEs have strong potential for enhancing the communication between architects and other professionals.

  • The mathematical modelling of screw compressor processes and its implementation in their design began about 30 years ago with the publication of several pioneering papers on this topic, mainly at Purdue Compressor Conferences. This led to the gradual introduction of computer aided design, which, in turn, resulted in huge improvements in these machines, especially in oil-flooded air compressors, where the market is very competitive. A review of progress in such methods is presented in this paper together with their application in successful compressor designs. As a result of their introduction, even small details are now considered significant in efforts to improve performance and reduce costs. Despite this, there are still possibilities to introduce new methods and procedures for improved rotor profiles, design optimisation for each specified duty and specialized compressor design, all of which can lead to a better product and new areas of application. A review of methods and procedures which lead to modern screw compressor practice is presented in this paper. This paper is intended to give a cross section through activities being done in mathematical modelling of screw compressor process through last five decades. It is expected to serve as a basis for further contributions in the area and as a challenge to the forthcoming generations of scientists and engineers to concentrate their efforts in finding future and more extended approaches and submit their contributions.

  • The PHENIX Experiment is the largest of the four experiments that have taken data at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. PHENIX, the Pioneering High Energy Nuclear Interaction eXperiment, is designed specifically to measure direct probes of the collisions such as electrons, muons, and photons. The primary goal of PHENIX is to discover and study a new state of matter called the Quark-Gluon Plasma. Among many particles, muons coming from W-boson decay gives us key information to analyze the spin of proton. Resistive plate chambers are proposed as a suitable solution as a muon trigger because of their fast response and good time resolution, flexibility in signal readout, robustness and the relatively low cost of production. The RPC detectors for upgrade were assembled and their performances were evaluated. The procedure to make the detectors better was optimized and described in detail in this thesis. The code based on ROOT was written and by using this the performance of the detectors made was evaluated, and all of the modules for north muon arm met the criteria and installation at PHENIX completed in November 2009. As RPC detectors that we made showed fast response, capacity of covering wide area with a resonable price and good spatial resolution, this will give the opportunity for applications, such as diagnosis and customs inspection system.

  • The aim of this study was to assess the rate of uptake of a customised annual Colorectal Cancer Awareness, Screening and Treatment Project (CCASTP) using faecal immunohistochemical test (FIT) kits in low income communities in Malaysia. The immediate objectives were (1) to evaluate the level of adherence of CRC screening among low-income groups, (2) to assess the knowledge and awareness of the screened population and (3) to assess the accuracy of FIT kits. A total of 1,581 FIT kits were distributed between years 2010 to 2015 to healthy asymptomatic participants of the annual CCASTP organized by Empowered - the Cancer Advocacy Society of Malaysia. Data for socio-demographic characteristics, critical health and lifestyle information of the registered subjects were collected. Findings for use of the FIT kits were collected when they were returned for stool analyses. Those testingd positive were invited to undergo a colonoscopy examination. A total of 1,436 (90.8%) of the subjects retuned the FIT-kits, showing high compliance. Among the 129 subjects with positive FIT results, 92 (71.3%) underwent colonoscopy. Six cases (6.5%) of CRC were found. Based on the data collected, the level of awareness of stool examination and knowledge about CRC was poor amongst the participants. Gender, age group, ethnicity and risk factors (i.e. smoking, lack of exercise and low consumption of fresh fruits) were associated with positive FIT-kit results. In conclusion, CRC screening can be performed in the community with a single FIT-kit. Although CRC knowledge and awareness is poor in low-income communities, the average return rate of the FIT kits and rate of colonoscopy examination were 91.2% and 70.3%, respectively.

  • It is said that the highlight in the media covergence and integration within digital environment era is 'Contents'. Due to the advent of new media and various covergence and integration services, the competition between the platforms has become aggressive. As a result, it is predicted that the negotiation power of a 'Content's industry will be strengthened. In reality, the actual environmental changes in the media environment have accompanied elements of industrial crisis rather than opportunity to expand the market. The changes are especially causing sales structure distortion and proceeds deterioration in the Korean film industry. Moreover, telecommunication and broadcasting businesses are making their entrance into the film industry, through the appearance of the media covergence and integration as a backdrop. Thus, the situation that the Korean film industry is facing is closely associated with the development of the digital technology and new media environment. Eventually, weathering the crisis and pioneering the future will be possible through changes in the media environment. The purpose of this study is to show how the media covergence and integration phenomenon is occurring in the film industry. This study will also focus on what new problems are occurring as a result, and seek out the solutions that are available.

  • During the 1970s, as Los Angeles-based designer April Greiman made her professional way, her work was popularly labeled "New Wave: The term no longer seems to fit. Today, Greiman refers to her brand of design as "hybrid imagery." For combining photography, drawing, video, computer-generated images and typography in her designs, she creates a crossbreed that blends but is unlike any of its parts. To her credit, Greiman was one of the first designers who saw potential in the "textures" of video and computer-based imagery, and was brave enough to integrate this new visual language into the mainstream design work she was creating. She was also one of the designers to use the Macintosh computer as her primary design tool. Despite her pioneering work, she refuses the label of "experimental" designer. She prefers to say she, is interested in process, in layering images to evoke both a thoughtful and emotional response. thoughtful and emotional response.

  • Split-tee connection with High Strength Bolts is normally used in low and middle rise buildings in Europe because the structural efficiency and installation work of connections are excellent. However, the domestic situation is different from that in Europe. The analysis and the design for the T-split connection are complicated, because the structural behavior often T-split connection with High Strength Bolt is governed by so many parameters, i.e., prying action, bolt's tension, shear failure and plastic failure of flange plates. Many researches regarding the structural behavior of the split-tee connection have been undertaken in other parts of the world, such as the, Americas, Japan and Europe, but in the domestic context, this is a pioneering study. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to supply basic data for the design of T-split connection, and to verify the structural characteristics that define reactions to prying action, based on an experimental study.
