  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of soil fertilizers on wax content, contact angle, mineral nutrient content of Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb, et Zucc.) leaves and soil acidity of Japanese red pine communities in Namsan and Kwangnung to see whether they can recover forest decline. Japenese red pine communities were treated with $Ca(OH)_2$, $Mg(OH)_2$, $Ca(OH)_2+Mg(OH)_2$+C.F.(compound fertilizer) in a randomized complete block design with 3 replication from November, 1990 through October, 1993. Wax content, contact angle value and mineral nutrient content of Japanese red pine leaves and soil pH of communities were measured and the results obtained are as follows: 1. Contact angle value and wax content of Japenese red pine leaves increased when the fertilizers were applied in soil. The order leaves grew, the smaller their contact angle values. 2. K and Ca contents of Japanese red pine leaves were higher in Namsan than in Kwangnung, whereas Mg content was higher in Kwangnung. K and Mg contents of the leaves increased with fertilization both in Namsan and Kwangnung. 3. Soil acidity of pH 4.2 ~ 4.3 was shown in Namsan and pH 4.6 ~ 4.9 in Kwangnung. No acidity changes were shown when the fertilizers were applied in soil. However with the lapse of the soil fertilizer application time, there was the indication that soil pH became higher in the fertilizer treatments than in the control.

  • This study was designed to investigate the effects of buthanol (BuOH) fraction of pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb et Zucc) needle on cholesterol and lipofuscin (LF) accumulations, acetylcholine (ACh) and its related enzyme activities such as choline acetyltransferase (CAhT) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and monoamone oxidase-B (MAO-B) activity, which destroyed the catecholamine-related neurotransmitters in brain membranes of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Male SD rats were fed basic diets (control group) or experimental diets (BuOH-25, BuOH-50 and BuOH-100) for 45 days. Cholesterol accumulations in mitochondria and microsomes were significantly inhibited (about 14 - 17% and 23 - 34%, respectvely) in BuOH-50 and BuOH-100 groups, whereas LF levels were significantly inhibited (about 10 - 14%) in BuOH-50 and BuOH-100 groups compared with control group. ACh levels and ChAT activities were significantly increased (about 11 - 17% and 11 - 23%, respectively) in membranes of BuOH-50 and BuOH-100 groups compared with control group. AChE activities were significantly increased (about 14 - 17%) in membranes of BuOH-50 and BuOH-100 groups. There was no significant difference in MAO-B activities between control and experimental diet groups. The results suggest that butanol fraction of pine needle may play an effective role in an antiaging effect and improving a learning and memory impairments.

  • This study explored how simultaneous treatment of monoammonium phosphate (MAP) and boric acid for Pinus densiflora and Populus euramericana influenced the properties such as fire resistance, preservation against Trametes versicolor and Tyromyces palustris, and compressive strength of the treated woods. For specific gravity and compressive strength, the treated woods were higher than the non-treated ones. For the analytical features observed by SEM, the cell walls of the non-treated woods were extremely destructed by T. palustris and T. versicolor while the treated ones relatively remained intact. Especially, P euramericana was more readily exposed to the attack of the rot fungi than P. densiflora.

  • This study was designed to investigate the effects of ethyl acetate(EtOAc) fraction of pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb et Zucc) needle on cholesterol and lipofuscin(LF) accumulations, acetylcholine(ACh) and its related enzyme activities such as choline acetyltransferase(ChAT) and acetylcholinesterase(AChE), and monoamine oxidase-B(MAO-B) activity, which destroyed the catecholamine related neurotransmitters in brain membranes of Sprague- Dawley (SD) rats. Male SD rats were fed basic diets (control group) and experimental diets (EtOAc-25, EtOAc-50 and EtOAc-100) for 45 days. Cholesterol accumulations in mitocholndria and microsomes were significantly inhibited (11.8-12.1% and 9.6-13.0%, respectvely) in EtOAc-50 and EtOAc-100 groups. ACh levels and ChAT activities were significantly increased about 10% in membranes of EtOAc-100 group compared with control group. AChE activities were significantly increased about 8 -12% in membranes of EtOAc-50 and EtOAc-100 groups compared with control group. MAO-B activities were significantly inhibited about 10% in membrane of EtOAc-l00 group compared with control group. These results suggest that ethyl acetate fraction of pine needle may play an effective role in inhibiting cholesterol and improving a membrane fluidity, and learning and memory impairments. • In order to elucidate the metabolism of the systemic insecticide, phosphamidon(2-chloro-2-diethylcarbamoyl-1-methylvinyl dimethyl phosphate), treated to pine trees against pine leaf gall midges (Thecodiplosis japonensis Uchida et Inouye), $[vinyl,\;carbonyl-^{14}C]$phosphamidon was implanted into the trunks of 10-year-old Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.) and Japanese black pine (Pinus thunbergii Parl.), respectively. This chemical was degraded very quickly in pine trees after implanting, as confirmed by TLC/autoradiography of the extracts of pine needles. Phosphamidon metabolites in phosphate buffer extracts of pine needles include the major metabolite, ${\alpha}-chloroacetoacetic$ acid diethyl-amide, ${\alpha}-chloroacetoacetic$ acid ethylamide, 3-hydroxy-N,N-d iethylbutanamide, acetoacetamide, and trimethyl phosphate. The metabolism within pine trees is expected to be similar to this. Based on these findings, it is believed that the major pathway leading to the metabolites would be related to the P-O-vinyl hydrolysis of the chemical structure.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the mechano-sorptive deflection of shear creep of drift pin jointed solid wood. Specimens were the solid wood of Pinus densiflora. The joint was composed with steel plate and drift pin, 85mm in length and 10mm in diameter. The creep tests were conducted under the constant loads in an variable environment. Five different shearing loads were applied parallel to the grain of specimens. The shearing loads applied were 170, 340, 510, 680 and 850 kgf. The stress levels were 10, 20, and 30, 40 and 50% of the bearing strength obtained from the tension-type lateral strength test. The creep tests for specimens were carried out for 10300 hours. A few general conclusions could be drawn from this study: The mechano-sorptive deflection (${\delta}$ ms) is defined as ${\delta}\;ms={\delta}\;t-({\delta}\;c+{\delta}\;sh)-{\delta}\;o$, where ${\delta}$ t is the total deflection, ${\delta}$ c is the pure creep, ${\delta}$ sh is shrinkage-swelling behavior, and ${\delta}$ o is the initial deflection. Changes of relative humidity may cause more severe creep deflection than those of constant humidity, especially during the drying process. The mechano-sorptive behaviors of specimens, except the effects of shrinkage and swelling, gradually increased with increasing time. The deflection is increased in desorption process and recovered in adsorption process. The deflections of drift pin jointed solid wood under different loads showed almost same tendency in all specimens. Although the creep deflection tendencies of each series are very similar, the specimens subjected to a large shearing load exhibit large creep deflections in the desorption process than do those to the small shearing load specimens.

  • In this study, the effects of carbonization temperature on the physico-chemical properties of porous wood charcoal are studied by FT-IR and Raman spectroscopies. IR studies showed that cellulose and hemicellulose are mostly decomposed in the precarbonization stage at $500^{\circ}C$, while the decomposition reaction of relatively more stable lignin lasts up to $700^{\circ}C$. Above $900^{\circ}C$, the peak at $1575cm^{-1}$ disappears and a new peak at $1630cm^{-1}$, which seems to be related to the new carbon deposit phase, is evolved. The results of Raman studies, which show the red-shift of D-band and the increase in the relative intensity of D- to G-band, indicate that the size of the crystalline becomes smaller with increasing the carbonization temperature.

  • This study was aimed to investigate the changes of chemical composition of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from red pine needles in the process of needle abscission or senescence. The VOCs in intact, senescent, and litter red pine needle samples were analyzed by headspace-solid phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC/MS). And then, multivariate statistical interpretation of the processed data sets was conducted to investigate similarities and dissimilarities of the needle samples. Principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) were used to investigate the dataset structure and discrimination between samples, respectively. From the data preview, the levels of major components of VOCs from needles were not significantly different between needle samples. By PCA investigation, the data reduction according to classification based on the chlorophyll a / chlorophyll b (Ca/Cb) ratio were found to be ideal for differentiating intact, senescent, and litter needles. The following OPLS-DA taking Ca/Cb ratio as y-variables showed that needle samples were well grouped on score plot and had the significant discriminant compounds, respectively. Several compounds had significantly correlated with Ca/Cb ratio in a bivariate correlation analysis. Notably, the litter needles had a higher content of oxidized compounds than the intact needles. In summary, we found that chemical compositions of VOCs between intact, senescent, and litter needles are different each other and several compounds reflect characteristic of needle.

  • In this study, Gwanghanru Pavilion (Namwon-si, Cheonbuk Province) was dated by tree rings of pines (Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc., 'sonamu' in Korean). The present Gwanghanru Pavilion is composed of three parts: main, wing and entrance parts. The main part is known to have been built in 1626 and the entrance hall in 1879, but the date of construction of the wing part is still unknown. We dated a total of 55 wood samples which were replaced during the repair process in 2001~2002. Tree-ring dates indicated that both main and wing parts were built in 1626. Tree rings also revealed that the entrance hall was constructed in 1880~1881, and both main and wing parts were heavily repaired together while appending the entrance hall. In conclusion, dendrochronology, i.e., tree-ring dating, was a useful and accurate method to identify the critical dates-such as the dates of original construction, reconstruction, repairs and extensions-for the history of Korean traditional buildings.
