A new electrostatic separator has been developed for the removal of unburned carbon from fly ash. In this separator, a flowing film of fly ash is created on the surface of a vibrating electrode. Conducting particles such as unburned carbon acquire electrostatic charges and jump out of the flowing film so that they can be removed from the non-conducting fly ash particles moving forward. The new separator has been tested successfully using a pilot-scale test unit at 0.5 tons/hr capacity. Based on the successful test results, a larger unit is being constructed at the present time.

In this paper, we suggest a localization method of factors affecting the accuracy of Air-to-Ground weapon delivery. The proposed method, called FBEL(Factor-Based Error Localization), is based on the fault localization technique widely utilized in the realm of software engineering field. FBEL localizes the major factors affecting the performance of weapon delivery. To analyze the effectiveness and the applicability of FBEL, we applied FBEL to real firing data and got the major factors caused the errors. We expect that the method could contribute to improve the quality of weapon delivery system. We also expect that it may aid improvement of pilot capability greatly, if it is applied to pilot firing training.
Liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry using isotope dilution method has been established as a primary method for the measurement of cortisol in human serum. Verification of this method was accomplished by the participation in Consultative Committee for Amount of Substance-Metrology in Chemistry (CCQM) pilot study. Two levels of cortisol certified reference materials were prepared and certified by the established method. They were used as sample materials for the proficiency testing. The expanded uncertainty in the measurement of cortisol in human serum was approximately 1.2% at 95% confidence level. The results of the proficiency testing showed a good precision among the participants, but some bias to the certified values. This means that commercial field laboratories should keep traceability chain to SI unit through available reference measurement procedures and/or available reference materials.
Triaxial tests are essential to estimate the shear strength properties of the soil or rock. Normally triaxial tests are carried out on samples of 38 mm diameter and 76 mm height. Granular materials, predominantly used in base/sub-base construction of pavements or in railways have size range of 60-75 mm. Determination of shear strength parameters of those materials can be made possible only through triaxial tests on large diameter samples. This paper describes a large diameter cyclic triaxial testing facility set up in the Geotechnical Engineering lab of Indian Institute of Science. This setup consists of 100 kN capacity dynamic loading frame, which facilitates testing of samples of up to 300 mm diameter and 600 mm height. The loading ram can be actuated up to a maximum frequency of 10 Hz, with maximum amplitude of 100 mm. The setup is capable of carrying out static as well as dynamic triaxial tests under isotropic, anisotropic conditions with a maximum confining pressure of 1 MPa. Working with this setup is a difficult task because of the size of the sample. In this paper, a detailed discussion on the various problems encountered during the initial testing using the equipment, the ideas and solutions adopted to solve them are presented. Pilot experiments on granular sub-base material of 53 mm down size are also presented.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The role of a school's nutrition environment in explaining students' eating behaviors and weight status has not been examined in an Asian setting. The purpose of this study was to create a school nutrition environment index and to pilot test the index in elementary and middle schools in urban South Korea. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This study used a mixed-methods approach. Environment assessment tools were developed based on formative research, which comprised literature reviews, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions. Key elements from the formative research were included in the assessment tool, which consisted of a structured survey questionnaire for school dietitians. Fifteen school dietitians from 7 elementary and 8 middle schools in Seoul completed the questionnaire. RESULTS: The formative research revealed four main sections that guided a summary index to assess a school's nutrition environment: resource availability, education and programs, dietitians' perceptions and characteristics, and school lunch menu. Based on the literature reviews and interviews, an index scoring system was developed. The total possible score from the combined four index sections was 40 points. From the 15 schools participating in the pilot survey, the mean school nutrition-environment index was 22.5 (standard deviation ${\pm}3.2$; range 17-28). The majority of the schools did not offer classroom-based nutrition education or nutrition counseling for students and parents. The popular modes of nutrition education were school websites, posters, and newsletters. CONCLUSIONS: This paper illustrates the process used to develop an instrument to assess a school's nutrition environment. Moreover, it presents the steps used to develop a scoring system for creation of a school nutrition environment index. As pilot testing indicated the total index score has some variation across schools, we suggest applying this instrument in future studies involving a larger number of schools. Future studies with larger samples will allow investigation of the validity and reliability of this newly developed tool.

Cyclonic-dissolved air flotation(Cyclonic-DAF), an advanced form of pressure flotation, applies a structure that enables the forming of twirling flows. This in turn allows for suspended matter to adhere to microbubbles and float to the surface of a treatment tank during the process of intake water flowing through a float separation tank. This study conducted a lab-scale test and pursued geometrical modeling using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) to establish a pilot scale design. Based on the design parameters found through the above process, a pilot cyclonic-DAF system($10m^3/hr$) for removing algae was created. Upon developing the pilot-scale cyclonic-DAF system, a type of algae coagulant(R-119) was applied as the coagulant to the system for field testing through which the removal rates of chlorophyll-a and cyanobacteria were evaluated. The chlorophyll-a and harmful cyanobacteria of the raw water at region B, the field-test site, were found to be $177.9mg/m^3$ and 652,500cells/mL respectively. Treated waters applied with 60mg/L and 100mg/L of algae coagulant presented removal efficiencies of approximately 95% and 97%, respectively. The cyanobacteria cell number of the treated waters applied with 60mg/L and 100mg/L of algae coagulant both that were equal to or less than 1,000cells/mL and were below attention level criteria for the issuance of algae boundary.

The benefits of the pneumatic valve with piezoelectric element are faster response times, low energy consumption, and the ability to be used in hazardous environments and field bus systems. In this paper, PZT actuator, 2 and 3 stages pneumatic valve were designed and manufactured. Also. characteristics of the pneumatic valve with piezoelectric element were tested with a testing system. It is confirmed that the PZT actuator is useful one for controlling the direction of pilot valve.
A critical problem in the integration of stores into new and existing aircraft is the safe separation of the stores from the aircraft at a variety of flight conditions representative of the aircraft flight regime. Typically, the certification of a particular store/aircraft/flight condition combination is accomplished by a flight test. Flight tests are very expensive and do expose the pilot and aircraft to a certain amount of risk. Wind tunnel testing, although less expensive than flight testing, is still expensive. Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) has held out the promise of alleviating expensive and risk by simulating weapons separation computationally. The forces and moments on a store at carriage and at various points in the flow field of te aircraft can be computed using CFD applied to the full aircraft and store geometry. This study needs full dynamic characteristics study and flow analysis for securing store separation safety. Present study performs dynamic simulation of store separation with flow analysis using Chimera grid scheme which is usually used for moving simulations.

Accelerated life testing of a car is used to get information quickly on its life distribution. Test cars are no under severe conditions and fail sooner than under usual conditions. A model is fitted to the accelerated failure times and then extrapolated to estimate the life distribution under usual conditions. This paper presents an accelerated test md the reliability growth theory, and applies it to some subsystems of cars during their prototype and pilot testing. The data presented illustrates explicitly the prediction of the reliability growth in the product development cycle. The application of these techniques is a part of the product assurance function that plays an important role in product reliability improvement.
