  • According to U.S. NTSB, accidents of scheduled airliners from 1989 to 1992 caused by the lack of SA consisted of approximately 80% of all aircraft accidents, which emphasized the importance of maintaining SA. Furthermore, all of the 27 domestic helicopter accidents between 1996 and 2005 were related with pilot SA and of these, 21 events were directly attributed to pilot errors. Therefore, SA is a matter of great importance to pilots. Following the pre-study of the relations between SA and pilot qualifications, the results of this study which deals with SA and pilot working careers show the statistical importance between those two factors.

  • This work was investigated on pilot injection strategy of blended fuels(Diesel-DME) for combustion and emissions in a single cylinder direct injection compression ignition engine. Diesel and DME were blended by the method of weight ratio. Weight ratios for diesel and DME were 95:05 and 90:10 respectively. dSOI between main and pilot injection timing was varied. A total amount of injected fuels(single injection) was adjusted to obtain the fixed BMEP as 4.2 bar in order to compare with the fuel conditions. Also, the amount of pilot injection fuel was varied by 5%, 10% and 20% of total injection fuel. The engine was equipped with common rail and injection pressure is 700 bar at 1200 rpm. As a result, when mixing ratio increase, indicated thermal efficiency was increased in comparison with DD 100 and CO, THC and smoke were lower than DD 100. The influence of reducing NOx by pilot injection was more effective than DD 100. When pilot injection quantity increase, abrupt increase of NOx was occured at pilot injection quantity of 20%.

  • The pilot aptitude test so far has been conducted with a dichotomous concept of cognitive factor and non-cognitive factor, so it was not easy to explain concrete factors about pilot aptitude. Therefore, an integrated approach is needed to construct pilot aptitude test including all factors that can predict pilot aptitude. In previous study, we developed questionnaire items for the Pilot Aptitude Personality Test(PAPT) which can predict the flight training achievement through personality and personal characteristics. And those items were categorized as personality, cognition, and motivation factors. The flight training grades were correlated with all the test factors of the items, and the cognitive factors were high. As a result of the regression analysis, the total score of the three factors together accounted for 16% of the flight training grades. The results of the ANOVA showed that the cognition factors and motivation factors had significant effects on the completion of the flight training. The factors of PAPT predicted not only the completion of the flight training but also the flight performance. This is because the existing paper-pencil pilot aptitude test can only discriminate the flight training completion status. This is also a result of the fact that the introductory flight training consists of various factors including not only basic cognition but also personality and motivation.

  • The capability of pilot injection with small fuel quantity at all engine operating conditions is one of the main feature of the common rail system. The purpose of the pilot injection is to lower the engine noise and to reduce the NOx emissions. This study describes the pilot spray structure characteristics of the common-rail diesel injectors, solenoid-driven and piezo-driven type, with different electric driving characteristics So, three common-rail injectors with different electric current wave were used in this study. The pilot spray characteristics such as spray speed, spray tip penetration, and spray angle were obtained by spray images, which is measured by the back diffusion light illumination method with optical system for high-speed temporal photography. Also the CFD analysis was carried out for fuel behavior under high pressure in between needle and nozzle of solenoid-driven injector to know the condition of initial injection at experiment test. It was found that pilot injection of common-rail system was effected by rate of injection and temperature of injected fuel and electrical characteristic of the driven injector.

  • There is a concern in the aviation community that pilot schedules can lead to fatigue and increased chance of an aviation accident. Yet despite this concern, there is little empirical studies showing the relationship between pilot fatigue and commercial aviation accidents. At this point of view, countering fatigue is a challenging proposition in complex aviation operations. However, with appropriate planning, many strategies can contribute to pilot alertness and flight safety. With proper education program, sustaining a physiological fit, a right knowledge about pilot fatigue can design a safety operations. On this study, I inquire into the ways of enhancing pilot's efficiency from fatigue.

  • Recently due to shortage of pilots from aviation developed countries such as America, Japan and etc, not even regional airlines but also major airlines are facing difficulties of pilot shortage. Through statistic data, ICAO and Boeing Company are predicting that roughly 8 thousands of new pilots will be short per year. Therefore, to solve this pilot shortage, countries are searching solutions like reducing air route, and extending regular retirement. This study analyzes domestic pilot supply market and compares systems of pilot training between the domestic system and the system of America and Japan. From the comparison, the study has deducted improvements for the role of domestic certification system, ATO(Approval of Training Organizations) operation, and related organizations including the government.

  • The Pilot Aptitude Research Equipment (PARE) at the Republic of Korea Air Force Academy had been installed to study the pilot aptitude of the cadets and the student pilots(Navy officers and Air Force officers from the pilot scholarship programs and the ROTC). The T-37 simulated flight program and procedure, and the automatic evaluated program for simulated flight have been orderly developed to use the PARE effectively. The cadets who entered started to get simulated flight training by using those developed programs. Their flight situation has been recorded by the automatic evaluated program whenever they got the training. And then the cadets who took part in the simulated flight started the elementary combat flight training in 1,999 after getting appointed to an office and finished the advanced combat flight training in 2,001. The study of the relationship between the simulated flight and the combat flight training has begun after finding their combat flight training results. The Logistic Discriminal Analysis, technique of the SAS statistical analysis package was used to study the pilot aptitude model through the simulated flight training. This study showed that it is possible to pre-estimate the result of the combat flight training using the PARE machine.
