  • For the interests in the economical and safe design of foundation system, the concern on the piled raft or disconnected piled raft foundation system is increasing now. In this study, the behavior and the effects of the disconnected piled raft foundation not studied actively in this country were examined using the triaxial compression tests in place of laboratory model tests. The triaxial test samples were prepared with Jumunjin standard sand and the carbon rods, which simulate the ground soil and piles respectively. After the sample in which carbon rods were arranged was laid inside the triaxial chamber, the confining pressure was applied and then loading test was conducted. To analyze the reinforcing effects of the disconnected piled raft foundation, a few number of tests were carried out by changing the number, the diameter and the length of the model piles. As a result of this study, in the disconnected piled raft foundation system, even though the number of pile is few and the diameter of pile is small, the settlement of the foundation system decreased greatly.

  • For the structural foundation above the soft clay layer conditions, the design charts are first presented for the evaluation of both bearing capacity and total settlement in the basic raft foundation system. wad settlement relationship curves are used to evaluate the ultimate soil bearing capacity. The total settlement is evaluated by applying various traditional factors into the ultimate bearing capacity. Then, the parametric studies are carried out for the piled-raft foundation system. In the numerical analysis, the elasto-pastic finite element model(Mohr-Coulomb model) is used to present the foundation response and design charts, which enable the determination of the raft size and pile length and spacing.

  • This study was undertaken in order to investigate the load bearing capacity of raft in a piled raft through the laboratory model tests, the numerical and analytical analyses. The model tests were conducted about a piled raft, the free-standing pile group, a single pile, as well as a shallow foundation under equal conditions. The pile spacing and length, group type and soil conditions were varied in the laboratory model tests. The experimental results were compared with those by the commercial program, DEFPIG, conventional methods and Phung's method. According to this study, the behavior of piled raft was affected by pile spacing, length and soil conditions. Phung's method proved to be reliable for estimating the experimental results.

  • In this study, two-dimensional finite element method has been developed to simply consider the nonlinear load-settlement behavior of piled raft foundation subjected to vertical loads. The raft is modeled as the plate finite element based on Mindline's theory and the pile is modeled as the proposed simple pile model that is easy to consider the complex nonlinear load-settlement behavior between pile and soil. The developed numerical method has been compared with the settlement data of lab-scaled experiment and numerical solutions to verify that the developed numerical method shows satisfactory prediction for the nonlinear load-settlement of piled raft foundation.

  • Piled raft foundations have been highlighted as an economical design concept of pile foundations in recent years. However, piled raft foundations have not been widely used in Korea due to the difficulty in estimating the complex interaction effects among rafts, piles and soils. The authors developed an effective numerical program to analyze the behavior of piled raft foundations for practical design purposes and presented it briefly in this paper. The developed numerical program simulates the raft as a flexible plate consisting of finite elements with eight nodes and the raft is supported by a series of elastic springs representing subsoils and piles. This study imported another model to simulate pile groups considering non-linear behavior and interaction effects. The apparent stiffnesses of the soils and piles were estimated by iterative calculations to satisfy the compatibility between those two components and the behavior of piled raft foundations can be predicted using these stiffnesses. For the verification of the program, the analysis results about some example problems were compared with those of rigorous three dimensional finite element analysis and other approximate analysis methods. It was found that the program can analyze non-linear behaviors and interaction effects efficiently in multi-layered soils and has sufficient capabilities for application to practical analysis and design of piled raft foundations.

  • This paper describes a new optimum design approach for piled raft foundations using the genetic algorithm. The objective function considered is the cost-based total weight of raft and piles. The genetic algorithm is a search or optimization technique based on nature selection. Successive generation evolves more fit individuals on the basis of the Darwinism survival of the fittest. In formulating the genetic algorithm-based optimum design procedure, the analysis of piled raft foundations is peformed based on the 'hybrid'approach developed by Clancy(1993), and also the simple genetic algorithm proposed by the Goldberg(1989) is used. To evaluate a validity of the optimum design procedure proposed based on the genetic algorithm, comparisons regarding optimal pile placement for minimizing differential settlements by Kim et at.(1999) are made. In addition using proposed design procedure, design examples are presented.

  • The general design practice for piled footings is based on the assumption that the piles are free-standing, and that all the external loads are carried by the piles, with any contribution of the footing being ignored. This approach is not reasonable, because the footing itself is actually in direct contact with the soil, and thus carries a significant fraction of the loads. In the case of not considering the bearing capacity of footing, the bearing capacity of group piles can be evaluated conservatively in the designing the group piles. There are a number of reasons why the idea of piled raft design with considering the capacity of footing has not become widely used. One of the reasons is the lack of reliable calculation methods for estimating the behavior of piled raft. In this study the bearing capacity, settlement, load distribution, etc. of piled raft footing are studied.

  • There are several types of foundations for light-weight structures, such as low story buildings, on soft clay deposits. Those foundations, such as piled raft, compensated foundation, mat foundation, floating foundation are commonly used rather then end-bearing piles to get more benefits on the construction and cost savings. In this study, settlement behaviors are computed and compared for several types of foundations on soft clay deposits. Also, theoretical expressions of parameters for piled raft system were provided with co-relations for design purposes. The predictions of settlements of piled rafts foundation are proposed based on the pile dimensions and design loads. From this study, the piled raft foundations is more benefits for reducing the settlement of clay deposits, and it is found that the piled raft system is applicable and effective on thick clay deposits, and that differential settlements of the foundation should be managed by designing the configuration of pile lengths.

  • In case of estimation of settlement for the piled-raft foundation, it is necessary to consider interaction among raft, piles and soil. But, simple analytic methods usually are not applicable to considering this complicated interaction. In this study, a computer-based approximate analytic method, HDPR, was developed in consideration of above mentioned interaction in order to analysis of settlement for the piled-raft foundation. The finite element method was applied to raft analysis by means of the Mindlin plate theory, and soil and piles were modeled as springs which were connected with their raft. The linear spring which can consider multi layered soil and the non-linear spring were applied to soil springs and pile springs, respectively. The raft-piles-soil interaction was reflected to each spring. In order to verify the developed analytic method, it was compared and analyzed with 3D FEM analysis, existing approximate analytic method and site monitoring data. As a result, the developed analytic method showed reasonable results of settlement estimations of raft and piles for each case. From a practical point of view, it is confirmed that this analytic method is able to apply for analysis and design of the piled-raft foundation.

  • A three-dimensional approximate computer-based method, YSPR (Yonsei Piled Raft), was developed for analysis of behavior of piled raft foundations. The raft was modeled as a flat shell element having 6 degrees of freedom at each node and the pile was modeled as a beam-column element. The behaviors of pile head and soil were controlled by using $6{\times}6$ stiffness matrix. To model the non-linear behavior, the soil-structure interaction between soil and pile was modeled by using nonlinear load-transfer curves (t-z, q-z and p-y curves). Comparison with previous model and FEM analysis showed that YSPR gave similar load-displacement behaviors. Comparison with field measurement also indicated that YSPR gave a reasonable result. It was concluded that YSPR could be effectively used in analysis and design of piled raft foundations.
