A higher order zig-zag plate theory is developed to refine accurately predict fully coupled of the mechanical, thermal, and electric behaviors. Both the displacement and temperature fields through the thickness are constructed by superimposing linear zig-zag field to the smooth globally cubic varying field. Smooth parabolic distribution through the thickness is assumed in the transverse deflection in order to consider transverse normal deformation. Linear zig-zag form is adopted in the electric field. The layer-dependent degrees of freedom of displacement and temperature fields are expressed in terms of reference primary degrees of freedom by applying interface continuity conditions as well as bounding surface conditions of transverse shear stresses and transverse heat flux The numerical examples of coupled and uncoupled analysis are demonstrated the accuracy and efficiency of the present theory. The present theory is suitable for the predictions of fully coupled behaviors of thick smart composite plate under mechanical, thermal, and electric loadings.
The present study deals with two dimensional electro-elastic analysis of a functionally graded piezoelectric (FGP) cylinder under internal pressure. Energy method and first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) are employed for this purpose. All mechanical and electrical properties except Poisson ratio are considered as a power function along the radial direction. The cylinder is subjected to uniform internal pressure. By supposing two dimensional displacement and electric potential fields along the radial and axial direction, the governing differential equations can be derived in terms of unknown electrical and mechanical functions. Homogeneous solution can be obtained by imposing the appropriate mechanical and electrical boundary conditions. This proposed solution has capability to solve the cylinder structure with arbitrary boundary conditions. The previous solutions have been proposed for the problem with simple boundary conditions (simply supported cylinder) by using the routine functions such as trigonometric functions. The axial distribution of the axial displacement, radial displacement and electric potential of the cylinder can be presented as the important results of this paper for various non homogeneous indexes. This paper evaluates the effect of a local support on the distribution of mechanical and electrical components. This investigation indicates that a support has important influence on the distribution of mechanical and electrical components rather than a cylinder with ignoring the effect of the supports. Obtained results using present method at regions that are adequate far from two ends of the cylinder can be compared with previous results (plane elasticity and one dimensional first order shear deformation theories).
The high-technology industries including a semi-conductor and an information communication need an ultra-precision technology from the technological points of view. Nano technology based on an ultra-precision technology is being studied to overcome the delicate technology that may occur in the semi-conductor fields. Then, the transferring equipment with high resolution and long displacement becomes an important technology. The goal of this study is to analyze the displacement magnification mechanism driven by piezoelectric actuator which has high resolution and fast response characteristics using flexure hinge with the merits of soft displacement, negligible back-lash and stick-slip, and no-lubrication. The analyses to reduce the magnification losses occurred during the magnification process are performed using ANSYS software based on FEM. The five design variables such as arm thickness, thickness of hinge, radius of hinge, length of input side at the 1st lever and magnification ratio of 1st lever are optimized to induce the maximum magnification ratio using Taguchi method.
Vibration assisted cutting (VAC) is one of the promising methods for precision machining, which has been normally equipped with piezoelectric materials. In this paper, a feasibility of applying magnetostrictive materials to VAC as a cutting device instead of piezoelectric materials was studied. For this, the vibrational characteristics of a magnetostrictive material was investigated with respect to a coil design, a preload, and the effects of a biasing and an exciting magnetic fields. The output strain of a magnetostrictive material is restricted due to an increasing inductive impedance as the exciting frequency increases and the heat of coil, etc. Through the experimental results, it was found that the biasing and the exciting magnetic field affected the output performance significantly but not the preload. In conclusion, the magnetostrictive material could be used only in the low frequency range but not a good candidate for high frequency actuating application.
Nonlinear dynamic characteristics of active piezolaminated plates are investigated with respect to the thermopiezoelastic behaviors. For largely deformed structures with small strain, the incremental total Lagrangian formulation is presented based on the virtual work principles. A multi-field layer-wise finite shell element is proposed for assuring high accuracy and non-linearity of displacement, electric and thermal fields. For dynamic consideration of thermopiezoelastic snap-through phenomena, the implicit Newmark's scheme with the Newton-Raphson iteration is implemented for the transient response of various piezolaminated models with symmetric or eccentric active layers. The bifurcate thermal buckling of symmetric structural models is first investigated and the characteristics of piezoelectric active responses are studied for finding snap-through piezoelectric potentials and the load-path tracking map. The thermoelastic stable and unstable postbuckling, thermopiezoelastic snap-through phenomena with several attractors are proved using the nonlinear time responses for various initial conditions and damping loss factors. Present results show that thermopiezoelastic snap-through phenomena can result in the difficulty of buckling and postbuckling control of intelligent structures.
Aluminum nitride (AlN) thin films were deposited on Si substrates by using polycrystalline (poly) 3C-SiC buffer layers, in which the AlN film was grown by pulsed reactive magnetron sputtering. Characteristics of grown AlN films were investigated experimentally by means of FE-SEM, X-ray diffraction, and FT-IR, respectively. The columnar structure of AlN thin films was observed by FE-SEM. X-ray diffraction pattern proved that the grown AlN film on 3C-SiC layers had highly (002) orientation with low value of FWHM (${\Theta}=1.3^{\circ}$) in the rocking curve around (002) reflections. These results were shown that almost free residual stress existed in the grown AlN film on 3C-SiC buffer layers from the infrared absorbance spectrum. Therefore, the presented results showed that AlN thin films grown on 3C-SiC buffer layers can be used for various piezoelectric fields and M/NEMS applications.
The magnetostrictive material is magnetized in magnetic field and produces a nonuniform demagnetizing field inside and outside it. The demagnetization is decided by the permeability of magnetostrictive material and its size. The magnetoelectric performances are determined by the synthesis of the applied and demagnetizing fields. An analytical model is proposed to predict the magnetoelectric voltage coefficient (MEVC) of magnetostrictive/piezoelectric laminate composite using equivalent circuit method, in which the nonuniform demagnetizing field is taken into account. The theoretical and experimental results indicate that the MEVC is positively connected with the permeability and the piezomagnetic coefficient of magnetostrictive material. To obtain the maximum MEVC, both the permeability and the piezomagnetic coefficient of magnetostrictive material should be taken into account in selecting the suitable magnetostrictive material.

Rotating fluid induced vibration and instability of embedded piezoelectric nano-composite separators subjected to magnetic and electric fields is the main contribution of present work. The separator is modeled with cylindrical shell element and the structural damping effects are considered by Kelvin-Voigt model. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are used as reinforcement and effective material properties are obtained by mixture rule. The perturbation velocity potential in conjunction with the linearized Bernoulli formula is used for describing the rotating fluid motion. The orthotropic surrounding elastic medium is considered by spring, damper and shear constants. The governing equations are derived on the bases of classical shell theory (CST), first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and sinusoidal shear deformation theory (SSDT). The nonlinear frequency and critical angular fluid velocity are calculated by differential quadrature method (DQM). The detailed parametric study is conducted, focusing on the combined effects of the external voltage, magnetic field, visco-Pasternak foundation, structural damping and volume percent of SWCNTs on the stability of structure. The numerical results are validated with other published works as well as comparing results obtained by three theories. Numerical results indicate that with increasing volume fraction of SWCNTs, the frequency and critical angular fluid velocity are increased.
In the fields of the optics, precise machine, semiconductors, the micro-positioning actuators are required for the control of position in the submicron range. PNN-P2N-PZT ceramics were fabricated with various mole ratio of the PZT[Pb(Zr$_{1}$2//Ti$_{1}$2)O$_3$]. PNN (Pb(Ni$_{1}$3/Nb$_{2}$3/)O$_3$]and PZN[Pb(Zn$_{1}$3//Nb/sbu 2/3/)O$_3$] powders prepared by double calcination and PZT powders prepared by molten- salt synthesis method. The relative permittivity of specimen with PZT 0.3 mole ratio was shown 5,320 and appeared the relaxor ferroelectric feature. The maximum Piezoelectric coefficient d$_{31}$ to be used for evaluation the displacement of piezoceramics in PNN-PZN-PZT ceramics was 324$\times$10$^{-12}$ (C/V) at the vicinity of morphotropic phase boundary and was larger than that of solid PZT ceramics(120$\times$10$^{-12}$ C/V).
Magnetoelectric(ME) bulk composites with PZT-PNN-PZN/$Fe_2O_4$ were prepared by using a conventional ceramic methods and investigated on the ME voltage vs frequency of ac magnetic fields. We made the electric equivalent circuits by using the Maxwell-Wagner model and simulated the frequency dependence of ME voltage in low frequency region. ME devices were described by a series of two equivalent circuits of piezoelectric and magnetic, which have the relaxation time ${\tau}$ due to the interaction between ME device and load resistor. Equivalent circuit of piezoelectric material is independent of frequency. However ferrite magnetic materials have Debye absorption and dipolar dispersion, whose equivalent circuit is a function of frequency. Therefore we suggest the resistance in the equivalent circuit is proportion to $1+{\omega}^2{\tau}^2$ and the capacitance is in inverse proportion to $1+{\omega}^2{\tau}^2$ in the magnetic materials.
