A piezoelectric ceramic fiber composite (PCFC) was successfully fabricated using $0.69Pb(Zr_{0.47}Ti_{0.53})O_3-0.31[Pb(Zn_{0.4}Ni_{0.6})_{1/3}Nb_{2/3}]O_3$ (PZT-PZNN) for use in small-scale wind energy harvesters. The PCFC was formed using an epoxy matrix material and an array of Ag/Pd-coated PZT-PZNN piezo-ceramic fibers sandwiched by Cu interdigitated electrode patterned polyethylene terephthalate film. The energy harvesting performance was evaluated in a custom-made wind tunnel while varying the wind speed and resistive load with two types of flutter wind energy harvesters. One had a five-PCFC array vertically clamped with a supporting acrylic rod while the other used the same structure but with a five-PCFC cantilever array. Stainless steel (thickness: $50{\mu}m$) was attached onto one side of the PCFC to form the PZT-PZNN cantilever. The output power, in general, increased with an increase in the wind speed from 2 m/s to 10 m/s for both energy harvesters. The highest output power of $15.1{\mu}W$ at $14k{\Omega}$ was obtained at a wind speed of 10 m/s for the flutter wind energy harvester with the PZT-PZNN cantilever array. The results presented here reveal the strong potential for wind energy harvester applications to supply sustainable power to various IoT micro-devices.
In this paper, a new stacked element pressure sensor has proposed for heartbeat and respiration measurement. This device can be directly attached to an individual's chest; heartbeat and respiration are detected by the pulsatile vibration and deformation of the chest. A key feature of the device is the simultaneous measurement of heart rate and respiration. The structure of the sensor consists of two stacked elements, in which one element includes one polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) thin film bonded on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. In addition, for the measurement and signal processing, the electric circuit and the filter are simply constructed with an OP-amp, resistance, and a capacitor. One element (element1, PDMS) maximizes the respiration signal; the other (element2, PVDF) is used to measure heartbeat. Element1 and element2 had sensitivity of 0.163V/N and 0.209V/N, respectively, and element2 showed improved characteristics compared with element1 in response to force. Thus, element1 and element2 were optimized for measuring respiration heart rate, respectively. Through mechanical and vivo human tests, this sensor shows the great potential to optimize the signals of heartbeat and respiration compared with commercial devices. Moreover, the proposed sensor is flexible, light weight, and low cost. All of these characteristics illustrate an effective piezoelectric pressure sensor for heartbeat and respiration measurements.
The polymer crystallization process, promoting the formation of ferroelectric β-phase, is essential for developing polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based high-performance piezoelectric energy harvesters. However, traditional high-temperature annealing is unsuitable for the manufacture of flexible piezoelectric devices due to the thermal damage to plastic components that occurs during the long processing times. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of introducing a flash lamp annealing that can rapidly induce the β-phase in the PVDF layer while avoiding device damage through selective heating. The flash light-irradiated PVDF films achieved a maximum β-phase content of 76.52% under an applied voltage of 300 V and an on-time of 1.5 ms, a higher fraction than that obtained through thermal annealing. The PVDF-based piezoelectric energy harvester with the optimized irradiation condition generates a stable output voltage of 0.23 V and a current of 102 nA under repeated bendings. These results demonstrate that flash lamp annealing can be an effective process for realizing the mass production of PVDF-based flexible electronics.
Transparent and flexible electronic devices that are light-weight, unbreakable, low power consumption, optically transparent, and mechanical flexible possibly have great potential in new applications of digital gadgets. Potential applications include transparent displays, heads-up display, sensor, and artificial skin. Recent reports on transparent and flexible field-effect transistors (tf-FETs) have focused on improving mechanical properties, optical transmittance, and performances. Most of tf-FET devices were fabricated with transparent oxide semiconductors which mechanical flexibility is limited. And, there have been no reports of transparent and flexible all-organic tf-FETs fabricated with organic semiconductor channel, gate dielectric, gate electrode, source/drain electrode, and encapsulation for sensor applications. We present the first demonstration of transparent, flexible all-organic sensor based on multifunctional organic FETs with organic semiconductor channel, gate dielectric, and electrodes having a capability of sensing infrared (IR) radiation and mechanical strain. The key component of our device design is to integrate the poly(vinylidene fluoride-triflouroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE) co-polymer directly into transparent and flexible OFETs as a multi-functional dielectric layer, which has both piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties. The P(VDF-TrFE) co-polumer gate dielectric has a high sensitivity to the wavelength regime over 800 nm. In particular, wavelength variations of P(VDF-TrFE) molecules coincide with wavelength range of IR radiation from human body (7000 nm ~14000 nm) so that the devices are highly sensitive with IR radiation of human body. Devices were examined by measuring IR light response at different powers. After that, we continued to measure IR response under various bending radius. AC (alternating current) gate biasing method was used to separate the response of direct pyroelectric gate dielectric and other electrical parameters such as mobility, capacitance, and contact resistance. Experiment results demonstrate that the tf-OTFT with high sensitivity to IR radiation can be applied for IR sensors.

For next-generation electronic applications, human-machine interface devices have recently been demonstrated such as the wearable computer as well as the electronic skin (e-skin). For integration of those systems, it is essential to develop many kinds of components including displays, energy generators and sensors. In particular, flexible sensing devices to detect some stimuli like strain, pressure, light, temperature, gase and humidity have been investigated for last few decades. Among many condidates, a pressure sensing device based on organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) is one of interesting structure in flexible touch displays, bio-monitoring and e-skin because of their flexibility. In this study, we have investigated a flexible e-skin based on highly sensitive, pressure-responsive OFETs using microstructured ferroelectric gate dielectrics, which simulates both rapidly adapting (RA) and slowly adatping (SA) mechanoreceptors in human skin. In SA-type static pressure, furthermore, we also demonstrate that the FET array can detect thermal stimuli for thermoreception through decoupling of the input signals from simultaneously applied pressure. The microstructured highly crystalline poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) possessing piezoelectric-pyroelectric properties in OFETs allowed monitoring RA- and SA-mode responses in dyanamic and static pressurizing conditions, which enables to apply the e-skin to bio-monitoring of human and robotics.
Lead zirconium titanate (PZT) is usually used as bulk and thin films. Due to high flexibility and piezoelectric, ferroelectric and pyroelectric properties, PZT fiber has attracted in a variety of fields such as sensor devices, non-electromechanical systems and non-volatile ferroelectric memory devices. And PZT fiber can be numerously synthesized and almost with the diameter of PZT fiber thicker than $10{\mu}m$. However, the electrospinnig method is cost effective and convenient. PZT obtained by electrospinning methodhas the diameter from sub-micro to nanometer. In this paper, the PZT/PVP nanofibers were synthesized with three precursors, lead nitrate, zirconium ethoxide and titanium isopropoxide. And the PZT nanofibers were fabricated after removal of PVP by annealing process at various temperature. The obtained PZT nanofibers were characterized by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for chemical properties, X-ray diffraction (XRD) for crystallinity and phase, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for morphologies. The diameter of PZT nanofibers were measured with SEM. From the SEM images, we confirmed that diameter of PZT nanofibers was hundreds of nanometers and decreased with increasing the annealing temperature. When the annealing temperature increased, the crystallinity of PZT nanofibers changed from pyrochlore to perovskite structure.
This paper proposes a new alternating current driving method for highly capacitive loads such as plasma display panels or piezoelectric actuators, etc. In the proposed scheme, a current balance transformer, which has two windings with the same turn-ratio, provides not only a resonance inductance for energy recovery but also a current balance among all of the switching devices of the driver for current stress reduction. The smaller conduction loss than conventional circuits occurs due to the dual conduction paths which are parallel each other in the current balance transformer. Also, the leakage inductances of the transformer are utilized as resonant inductors for energy recovery by the series resonance to the capacitive load. Furthermore, the resonance contributes to the small switching losses of the switching devices by soft-switching operation. To confirm the validity of the proposed circuit, prototype hardware with a 12-inch mercury-free flat fluorescent lamp is implemented. The experimental results are compared with a conventional energy-recovery circuit from the perspective of luminance performances.
The electrocaloric effect can be observed in pyroelectric materials based on conversion between electrical and thermal energy, and can be utilized for the future environment-friendly refrigeration technology. Especially, a strong electrocaloric effect is expected in materials in which field-induced phase transition can be achieved. Emerging fluorite-structure ferroelectrics such as doped hafnia and zirconia, first discovered in 2011, are considered the most promising materials for next-generation semiconductor devices. Besides application of fluorite-structure ferroelectrics for semiconductor devices based on their scalability and CMOS-compatibility, field-induced phase transition has been suggested as another interesting phenomenon for various energy-related applications such as solid-state cooling with electrocaloric effect as well as energy conversion/storage and IR/piezoelectric sensors. Especially, their giant electrocaloric effect is considered promising for solid-state-cooling. However, the electrocaloric effect of fluorite-structure oxides based on field-induced phase transition has not been reviewed to date. In this review, therefore, the electrocaloric effect accompanied by field-induced phase transition in fluorite-structure ferroelectrics is comprehensively reviewed from fundamentals to potential applications.

This paper deals with the experimental assessment of the vibration suppression of the smart structures. First, we have presented the paper about the new high-speed active control system that we have developed using the DSP320C6713 microprocessor and a peripheral system composed of a data acquisition system, A/D and D/A converters, piezoelectric (PZT) actuator/sensors, and drivers using PA95. Since fast data processing is very important in the active vibration control of the structures, we utilized the fast processing DSP320C6713 microprocessor as a main processor to the controller and fast peripheral devices for fast control loop. To realize a fast active vibration control, we have analyzed and tested the processing time of the peripheral devices and provided the corresponding test results. Especially, we have focused on achieving the fast signal amplification of the PA95 device since it takes most of loop times of the control system. Finally, we performed numerous experiments of active vibration control of the aluminum plate to validate the superior performance of the developed control system based on previous mode tests of the plate.
