  • Chronic prostatitis/Chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is a common disorder to men that involved urinary symptoms and sexual activity-related discomfort. As a pathophysiology of the diseases has not been established, CP/CPPS is diagnosed on the basis of symptoms, principally pain or discomfort in the pelvic region. The purpose of this study is to report the clinical effects of Korean medicine, Sibimijihwang-tang(十二味地黃湯), bee venom pharmacopuncture, and acupuncture treatment on 6 cases of CP/CPPS. 6 patients were treated with Korean medicine, Sibimijihwang-tang and acupuncture and bee venom pharmacopuncture was given into Hoeeum(CV1) et al. National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (NIH-CPSI) was used to assess treatment effect. After treatment, NIH-CPSI decreased significantly all the patients. Sibimijihwang-tang, bee venom pharmacopuncture and acupuncture treatment was shown fairly effective to CP/CPPS.

  • Dampness is usually caused by the disorder of gi(氣) function, splenic dysfunction. It can be divided into exogenous and endogenous according to the route of invasion. The symptoms of dampness include heaviness of body and four limbs, heaviness of head like being bound, heaviness and lassitude of the whole body. Prescriptions for eliminating dampness are mostly composed of drugs that are aromatic, warm, dry, sweet and bland and can promote diuresis. This group of prescriptions tends to consume and impair body fluid. For this reason, they should be carefully used for patients with deficiency of eum(陰) and body fluid, or those who have weak constitution after illness. In order to select the right therapy for dampness, we must carefully analyze the state of dampness and the condition of healthy gi(氣), and distinguish the relationship between dampness and the healthy state of internal organs.

  • Tremor is a rhythmic and involuntary muscular contraction charaterized by oscillations of body parts. tremor often accompanies neurological disorders associated with aging. Although the disorder is not life-threatening, it can be responsible for functional disability and interpersonal relationship problems. We have recently examined a number of tremor-patients. One of them was improved significantly through the herbal medicine (Ssanghaptang-gamibang) and accupuncture, so we report it for the better treatment.

  • Autophagy is an important degradative pathway that eliminates misfolded proteins and damaged organelles from cells. Autophagy is crucial for neuronal homeostasis and function. A lack of or deficiency in autophagy leads to the accumulation of protein aggregates, which are associated with several neurodegenerative diseases. Compared with non-neuronal cells, neurons exhibit rapid autophagic flux because damaged organelles or protein aggregates cannot be diluted in post-mitotic cells; because of this, these cells exhibit characteristic features of autophagy, such as compartment-specific autophagy, which depends on polarized structures and rapid autophagy flux. In addition, neurons exhibit compartment-specific autophagy, which depends on polarized structures. Neuronal autophagy may have additional physiological roles other than amino acid recycling. In this review, we focus on the characteristics and regulatory factors of neuronal autophagy. We also describe intracellular selective autophagy in neurons and its association with neurodegenerative diseases.

  • Bile acids are major constituents of bile and known to help absorb dietary fat and fat-soluble vitamins in the gastrointestinal tract. In the past few decades, many studies have shown that bile acids not only play a role in fat digestion but also function as broad range of signal transduction hormones by binding to various receptors present in cell membranes or nuclei. Bile acid receptors are distributed in a wide range of organs and tissues in the human body. They perform multitudes of physiological functions with complex mechanisms. When bile acids bind to their receptors, they regulate fat and glucose metabolism in a tissue-specific way. In addition, bile acids are shown to inhibit inflammation and fibrosis in the liver. Considering the roles of bile acids as metabolic regulators, bile acids and their receptors can be very attractive targets in treating metabolic disorders. In the future, if roles of bile acids and their receptors are further clarified, they will be the novel target of drugs in the treatment of various metabolic diseases.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of forest environment and therapeutic program to the patients with major depressive disorder in antidepressant medication. The first group participated the four sessions of therapeutic program in the forest environment ("forest therapy"), the second group did in the program in a hospital environment, the third group did merely walking in the forest ("forest bath"), and the last group was controls. All the participants was diagnosed with major depressive disorder and had been taking antidepressant medication longer than 3 months. Depressive symptoms were measured by the Hamilton Rating Scales for Depression(HRSD), Montgomery-Asberg Depressin Rating Scales(MADRS), Beck Depression Inventory(BDI), and general health perception was measured by Short Form Health Survey Questionnaire(SF-36). Heart rate variability(HRV) were also examined to observe the physiological parameters before and after the program. In the results, HRSD score of forest program group was significantly lower than controls after the program. MADRS score of forest therapy group and hospital program group was also significantly lower than controls after 4 sessions of the program. The remission rate defined as below 7 points in HRSD was higher in the forest therapy group, hospital program group, forest bath group, and controls in order. These results reveals that the therapeutic program performed in forest environment may improve unremitted depressive symptoms of patients with major depressive disorder. Although not significant, the forest therapy program showed better outcome than hosptial program and forest bath.

  • Blood chemical values and sex steroid hormone concentration of repeat breeder and reproductive disorder in Hanwoo, which were bred in Chunchon areas, were examine to establish the basic physiological maker. The concentrations of albumin, blood urea nitrogen(BUN), calcium(Ca), cholesterol, creatinine, glucose, phosphorous, total protein and triglycerides in repeat breeder and reproductive disorder were 3.28$\pm$0.05 and 3.27$\pm$0.04 g/㎗, 11.07$\pm$0.61 and 12.69$\pm$0.88 mg/㎗, 9.98$\pm$0.10 and 9.56$\pm$0.11mg/㎗, 105.75$\pm$3.57 and 126.78$\pm$5.66mg/㎗, 1.62$\pm$0.05 and 1.65$\pm$0.09 mg/㎗, 67.46$\pm$9.07 and 76.97$\pm$3.76mg/㎗, 6.13$\pm$0.36 and 6.11$\pm$0.26mg/㎗, 5.82$\pm$0.08 and 6.18$\pm$0.08 g/㎗ , 12.82$\pm$1.46 and 15.19$\pm$1.61mg/㎗, respectively. Among the blood chemical values, Ca, cholesterol and inorganic phosphorous levels in repeat breeder and reproductive disorder were slightly higher than those in normal cows. The progesterone levels of pregnancy(0.18~6.56 ng/$m\ell$) and non-pregnancy(0.15~5.46ng/$m\ell$) cows at estrus cycle were showed similar trends from 0 day to 18 days. Those of pregnancy cows were increased gradually from 18 days to 180 days(5.90~7.51 ng/$m\ell$), while those of non-pregnancy cows were dramatically drop at 21 days (0.18$\pm$0.03mg/㎗). The concentrations of estrogen and progesterone in repeat breeder and reproductive disorder were 57.42$\pm$5.03, 56.76$\pm$8.73 pg/$m\ell$ and 6.26$\pm$0.83, 9.41$\pm$1.85 ng/$m\ell$ . respectively. These results indicate that blood chemical values in repeat breeder and reproductive disorder were not greatly difference in normal cows except for Ca, cholesterol, BUN and inorganic phosphorous. Since the progesterone levels in repeat breeder and reproductive disorder was maintained to the luteal phase levels of normal cows, it may cause of failing of conception and next estrus cycle.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of air humidity and water content of medium on the growth and physiological disorder of paprika in summer hydroponics. Treatments were composed of air humidity of control (over 90%) and dehumidification (low 90%) and water content of 80% and 50%. Time domain reflectometry (TDR) sensors and dehumidifier were used in a drip irrigation system and control system of air humidity, respectively. The early growth of paprika was not affected by air humidity but increased by high water content (80%) of medium. Mean fruit weight was reduced at high air humidity and low water content (50%) of medium, but the fruit number per plant and yield were increased at low air humidity. The incidence of brown fruit stem increased with increasing air humidity and water content of medium. Rate of blossom end rot increased in the low water content medium compared with the high water content medium. The nitrogen (N) was higher content in brown fruit stem than normal stem, but calcium (Ca) was lower.
