  • Zaltoprofen, a propionic acid derivative non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), is known to have powerful inhibitory effects on acute, subacute and chronic inflammation. We developed poly(lactide-co-glycolide)(PLGA) microspheres loaded with zaltoprofen for sustained controlled delivery using an oil-water solvent evaporation methods by varying PLGA molecular weight and cosurfactant contents. Physicochemical properties and morphology of zaltoprofen-loaded PLGA microspheres were investigated by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimeter. The size of microspheres increased with the molecular weight of PLGA and the content of cosurfactants. The increase of PLGA molecular weight and cosurfactant content decreased the porosity of microspheres, subsequently resulting in the slow drug release. The results demonstrated that the adjustment of PLGA molecular weight and the cosurfactant content allowed us to control the drug release profiles of drug-loaded microspheres.

  • In this study, polysaccharide-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels were prepared by using ${\gamma}$-ray and evaluated for potential application as an anti-inflammation patch. Ulmus davidiana var. japonica (UD), one of polysaccharides has been particularly used as an oriental remedy for the treatment of inflammation and ulcers. PVA as a biocompatible polymer and glycerin as a moisturizer were blended with the UD, and its hydrogels were prepared by radiation crosslinking. Characterizations for UD hydrogels were performed by using cytotoxicity assay, antioxidant activity test, and physicochemical test such as gel fraction ratio, and swelling behavior. The results showed that these UD hydrogels had excellent physical properties, anti-inflammation activity, and non-cytotoxicity on the cells. Therefore, these polysaccharide based-UD hydrogels can be effectively used as an inflammation patch.

  • The growth and yield performance of 19 new com hybrids were evaluated. Results showed that all hybrids had a superior growth performance in the drained-paddy than in the upland field except for daeyul ${\times}$ cheongdo and hyoryeong ${\times}$ cheongdo in plant height, cheongdoyeop ${\times}$ wx-3 in tassel1ength, and cheongdo (black) ${\times}$ wx-3 in number of tassel branch. The same hybrids, except cheongdoyeop ${\times}$ wx-3, obtained lower ear quality in drained-paddy field compared to upland in terms of ear weight, and ear and grain setting length. The highest yield in the drained-paddy and upland fields was obtained in the hybrids ks5wx ${\times}$ ks6wx ${\times}$ cheongdo (1,633.3kg ${\cdot}$ $10a^{-1}$) and daeyul ${\times}$ wx-3 (1,516.7kg ${\cdot}$ $10a^{-1}$), respectively. Highest yield among the wx-3 crosses was obtained in daeyul which was 1,583.3kg ${\cdot}$ $10a^{-1}$ and 1,516.7kg ${\cdot}$ $10a^{-1}$ in drained-paddy and upland field, respectively. For the crosses of wx-8, highest yields were recorded in the cultivar bugye50 (1,466.7kg ${\cdot}$ $10a^{-1}$) and seokgu12 (1,384.6kg ${\cdot}$ $10a^{-1}$) for drained-paddy and upland field, respectively. In the case of cheongdo, highest yields were obtained in ks5wx ${\times}$ ks6wx (1,633.3kg ${\cdot}$ $10a^{-1}$) and seokgu14 (1,111.1kg ${\cdot}$ $10a^{-1}$) for drained-paddy and upland field, respectively. Result also showed that the drained-paddy soil had better physicochemical properties than the upland. The relatively high performance in terms of growth parameters and yield of com hybrids planted in the drained-paddy field is in agreement with the higher organic matter and micro-element content of drained-paddy field.

  • Mn-impregnated activated carbon (Mn-AC) prepared at different conditions was applied in the treatment of synthetic wastewater containing both organic and inorganic contaminants. Phenol and As(III) was used as the representative organic and inorganic contaminants, respectively. After evaluation of the physicochemical characteristic and stability of Mn-AC, oxidation of As(III) as well as adsorption of phenol by activated carbon(AC) and Mn-AC were investigated in a batch reactor. To investigate the stability of Mn-AC, dissolution of Mn from each Mn-AC was measured pH ranging from 2 to 4. Although Mn-AC was unstable at a strong acidic condition, the dissoluted Mn was below 3 ppm at pH 4. XRD analysis of Mn-AC indicated that the mineral type of the impregnated manganese was $Mn_2O_3$. From the simultaneous treatment of As(III) and phenol by AC and Mn-AC, As(III) oxidation by Mn-AC was greater than that by AC at lower pH, while the reverse order was observed at higher pH. After impregnation of Mn onto AC, 13% decrease of the surface area was observed, causing 8% reduction of phenol removal. Considering removal properties of As(III) and phenol, Mn-AC could be applied in the simultaneous treatment of wastewater contaminated with multi-contaminants.

  • This study was performed to determine the effects of drying methods on the quality and physiological activities of blueberry. Blueberries(Vaccinium ashei) were dried by hot-air ($60^{\circ}C$), cyclic low pressure ($50^{\circ}C$), and freeze drying methods. They contained high properties of carbohydrates(68.48~80.00%), crude protein(1.63~5.41%), crude fat(0.58~1.25%), and ash(0.71~1.11%) regardless of the drying methods. There were no differences in pH according to the drying methods. Browning index increased as the drying temperature increased. The L, a values of the freeze-dried sample were higher than those of the other dried samples, whereas the b value of the cyclic low pressure dried sample was higher than that of the other samples. The free sugar contents of the hot-air sample were higher than those of the other samples. Vitamin C content of the freeze dried sample was higher than that of either the hot-air or cyclic low pressure dried sample. The contents of total polyphenols and anthocyanins were higher in the freeze dried sample. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of freeze drying sample was higher than that of either the hot-air or cyclic low pressure dried sample. The result indicated that there were no differences in product quality depending on the freeze-drying and cyclic low pressure drying methods.

  • Effects of nitric acid treatment of an activated carbon and impregnation of metal chlorides on the activated carbon were investigated to improve ammonia adsorption performance. It was confirmed that functional groups such as hydroxyl and carboxyl groups were introduced onto a surface of the activated carbon with nitric acid treatment. Then, each metal chloride (NiCl2, MgCl2, CuCl2, MnCl2 or CoCl2) was impregnated onto the surface-modified activated carbon using an ultrasonic impregnation method. The physicochemical properties and ammonia adsorption performance of various impregnated activated carbons were observed. Metal chlorides were well dispersed by sonication and evenly distributed on the surface of the activated carbon. Despite the reduced specific surface area and pore volume, the surface-modified activated carbon impregnated with metal chlorides exhibited excellent ammonia adsorption performance. In particular, HNO3-NiCl2 AC prepared by impregnating NiCl2 showed the best ammonia adsorption capacity of 3.736 mmol·g-1, which was improved by about 57 times compared to that of an untreated activated carbon (0.066 mmol·g-1).

  • In this study, the physicochemical properties of 21 wall fragments and rooftile pieces excavated from Jeseoksa Dump-site were analyzed, and the possibility of heat exposure, such as the fire reported in the literature, was investigated by estimating the firing temperature. From the results, it was estimated that the rooftiles were composed of refined materials, and the walls were composed of materials having different particle sizes depending on the layer. Unlike ordinary rooftiles and walls, they exhibited an uneven surface with traces of bloating phenomenon in the cross section. It was estimated from the blackening of some portions that firing was not performed in a controlled state in a constant firing environment. In addition, the estimated firing temperature showed that the non-overfired rooftiles had endured a firing temperature of 900℃ or less, but the over-fired samples were subjected to a temperature of 1,000℃ or higher and were fired at a temperature higher than the manufacturing temperature at that time. Additionally, the rooftiles probably became defective during firing or molding at the time of production, but the non-overfired rooftiles exhibited an intact shape and showed the possibility of heat exposure due to fire. Therefore, the analytical results of this study confirm that the defective architectural components damaged by the fire, as reported in the literature, were discarded in the Jeseoksa dump-site.

  • Characteristics of carbonaceous components and organic compounds in PM2.5 over the atmosphere of the Yellow Sea were investigated. PM2.5 samples were collected onboard the meteorological research vessel, GISANG 1, over the Yellow Sea during the YES-AQ campaign in 2018 and 2019, respectively. The average concentrations of carbonaceous components in this region were 2.59 ± 1.59 ㎍ m-3 for the OC, 0.24 ± 0.10 ㎍ m-3 for the EC, 2.14 ± 1.30 ㎍ m-3 for the WSOC and 1.17 ± 0.94 ㎍ m-3 for the HULIS-C, respectively. The total concentration of 56 organic compounds (ΣOCs) accounts for 10% of OC. The main group among organic compounds were dicarboxylic acids which account for 57% of ΣOCs, followed by n-alkanoic acids accounting for 34% of ΣOCs. In n-alkanoic acid distribution, hexanoic (C6:0) and octanoic (C8:0) acids which are low molecular weight n-alkanoic acids and known as emitted from marine biogenic activities were dominant in this region. Furthermore, non-HULIS-C fraction increased when the air mass originated from the marine region rather than the continental region. When the Asian dust episode was observed, the WISOC concentrations along with the levoglucosan were increased, while the haze episodes caused the increase of WSOC, HULIC-S and DCAs. In this study, we found that the components of carbonaceous and organic aerosols in PM2.5 over the Yellow Sea were changed with the specific air pollution episodes. It indicates that the physicochemical properties of PM2.5 can be changed by the air pollution episodes in this region.
