We investigated the seasonal variations in growth and physiological responses of the kelp species Ecklonia cava to different nitrogen sources to establish indoor culture conditions for mass production. Ecklonia cava was cultivated for 10 days in 16 combinations of seawater temperatures (15, 17, 21, and 25℃) and different nitrogen sources (control; NH-NH4+ 100 μM; NO-NO3- 100 μM; and NHNO-NH4+ 50 μM+NO3- 50 μM). The growth and growth rate of the blade were affected by temperature. The mean fresh weight and area-based daily growth rate were the highest (5.8±0.5 and 6.6±0.5% day-1, respectively) at 15℃ and the lowest (2.2±0.2 and 3.0±0.3% day-1, respectively) at 25℃. The daily growth rate was the highest in the NH and NO treatments and lowest in the control. The nitrate reductase activity of E. cava varied with water temperature (season). The highest activity was in the control (1.32±0.10 μmol NO2- g-1 dry weight h-1) and the lowest was in the NH treatment (0.25±0.02 μmol NO2- g-1 dry weight h-1). The photosynthetic pigment concentrations reached a maximum value in the NHNO treatment and a minimum value in the control. These results showed that water temperature played an important role in the cultivation of E. cava and that a single supply of NH4+ or NO3- may induce the accelerated growth of E. cava. The growth and physiological responses of E. cava to different nitrogen sources during each season provide valuable information for determining the optimal nitrogen source in E. cava cultivation under indoor conditions.
The increase in the frequency of occurrence of abnormal weather could include severe rainfall, which could cause rice submergence during the ripening stage. This experiment was conducted to clarify the effects of submergence during the ripening period on yield and quality of rice. The flooding treatment was conducted at 7 and 14 days after heading. Flooding conditions were created with two conditions, flag leaf exposed and overhead flooding, and each condition was divided into two conditions according to water quality-clear and muddy. Although the yield decrease was more severe at 7 days after heading because of the decrease in the ripening ratio, the head rice ratio was more affected at 14 days after heading because of the increase in the chalky kernel ratio. The maximum quantum yield (Fv/Fm), which indicates the photosynthetic efficiency, did not differ before and after the flooding treatment until flooding continued for 4 days. In addition, stem elongation occurred because of flooding as an avoidance mechanism in japonica rice. This phenomenon was expected to decrease the supply of assimilation products to the spikelet (sink). Overall, it was suggested that additional experiments should be conducted examining the change in the starch synthesis mechanism and transfer of assimilate products resulting from submergence, for development of cultivation techniques corresponding to submergence and breeding of varieties with submergence tolerance characteristics.
Growth of Campanula punctata 'Rubriflora' plantlets, as affected by three levels of photosynthetic photon flux (PPF), 70, 110, and $220{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, two levels of $CO_2$ concentration, 500 and $1,500{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-1}$, and two levels of number of air exchanges per hour (NAEH), 0.1 and $2.8 h^{-l}$, was studied. Explants were obtained from photomixotrophically-micropropagated plantlets. Four explants were planted in each $3.7{\times}10^{-4}m^3$ polycarbonate box containing MS basal medium and no added sucrose. Explants were cultured under cool-white fluorescent lamps for $16h{\cdot}d^{-1},\;at\;25\pm1^{\circ}C$ temperature, and $70\~80\%$ relative humidity In treatments of $2.8h^{-1}$ NAEH, a 10mm round hole made on the vessel cap was sealed with a microporous filter. For higher $CO_2$ concentrations in the culture room, $CO_2$ gas was provided from a tank of liquefied $CO_2$. Fresh and dry weights, length of the longest root, and number of leaves significantly increased with increasing PPF and especially $CO_2$ concentration. Length of the longest root, number of leaves, fresh and dry weights, and chlorophyll concentration were enhanced with increased NAEH. However, leaf area was the smallest in the $220{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}\;PPF\;2.8h^{-1}$ NAEH and especially, $1,500{\mu}mol{\cdot}mol^{-1}\;CO_2$ concentration treatment. Treatment effect became more produced with time. Overall, treatment with $220{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}\;PPF\;and\;1,500{\mu}mol{\cdot}mol^{-1}\;CO_2$ gave the most vigorous growth.
This study was conducted to analyze the water consumption in closed transplants production system (CTPS) for the production of quality transplants and to investigate the effect of relative humidity on the water balance in CTPS. Potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Dejima) plug seedlings were grown for 15 days at air temperature of 20$^{\circ}C$, relative humidity of 70%, photoperiod of 16/8 h, and photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) of 200 ${\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-l}$ following rooting for 5 days in CTPS. Amount of humidified, dehumidified, irrigated and evapotranspirated water were 67.9 kg${\cdot}m^{-2},\;196.9{\cdot}m^{-2},\;44.3\;kg{\cdot}m^{-2},\;33.5\;kg{\cdot}m^{-2}$, respectively. Water content of media and plants were 1.2 kg${\cdot}m^{-2},\;6.9\;kg{\cdot}m^{-2}$, respectively. Three relative humidity levels of 60, 70, and 80% were provided to analyze the effect of humidity on the water balance in CTPS. Amount of humidified, dehumidified, irrigated, evapotranspiratad water and water contents of media and plants increased with increasing relative humidity. Since the water consumption required to produce plug seedlings in CTPS dec1eased with decreasing relative humidity, the available water utilization efficiency of CTPS increased with decreasing relative humidity. CTPS showed high available water utilization efficiency of 0.92 - 0.97 if dehumidified water in CTPS was recycled. The development of CTPS with recycling system of dehumidified water will not only reduce the water consuming for the production of transplants but contribute to the establishment of plant production economizing in water consumption.
Properties of seed production in Corydalis, spring ephemeral, group were studied during two years at Namhansansung area. Corydalis´ flower was out in the early April and its seed dispersed in the early May. The period of total seed production was 30 days. The decrease rate of sex organs was the highest between deflowering time and early fruiting time. The numbers of flower and seed per plant were in the range of 1∼13 and 0∼76, respectively. And the number of seed per fruit was from zero to twenty. In a plant, seed production was the most (11.8 seeds) in the lowest fruit and conspicuously decreased along the upward fruit. In the same plant, seed production was various by each year. The plants of small tuber size produced more seeds and those of large tuber size produced fewer seeds in the next year than this year. In the early growth season, the flowering plants/total plants rate increased in proportion to plant size (tuber volume), the rate of the smallest size class (<100 ㎣) was in the range of 5.0%(1999)∼5.4%(2000), those over the 600 ㎣ size classes were 100%. The number of flower per plant at the same size class were higher in 2000 than in 1999. Especially, at the size class of 900 ㎣≤, the numbers of flower per plant were 13.2 in 2000 and 6.5 in 1999. In the late growth season, the flowering plants/total plants rates were 13.3%in the smallest size class (<100 ㎣)and 100% over the 500 ㎣ size classes. Therefore, the flowering plants/total plants rates along the size classes were higher in the late growth season than in the early one. The bumer of fruit or seed per plant increased in proportion to the volume and dry weight of tuber, there was not significant and varied along each plant in the same size class. The number of fruit or seed per plant conspicuously increased in proportion to the leaf area. Therefore, it was thought that seed production was related to photosynthetic ability during growth season.
Leaf damage rate and actual damaged leaf area by the apple leaf miner (ALM), Phyllonorycter ringoniella(Matsumura), and its parasitism were investigated in 1982 and 1983 in apple orchards. Percent leaf damage was higher in the occasionally sprayed orchards than in the periodically sprayed orchards from May to August, but the trend was reversed after September. Seasonal changes of the leaf damage seemed to be different with the varieties of apple trees. A few species of Eulophidae and Holcothorax testaceipes R. of Encyrtidae were the predominant parasites of the ALM. Overall percent parasitism was highest in the 5th (overwintering) generation, and conspicuously decreased in the 3rd-4th generation (July-August) when insecticides were sprayed periodically. Actual damaged leaf area per mine of the ALM was apparently different with the generations; $0.67cm^2$ for the 1st, $0.8{\sim}0.9cm^2$ for the 2nd-4th on the first growth shoot, and $1.49cm^2$ for the overwintered generation on the second growth shoot. When ALM leaf damage rate was about $53{\sim}73%$, the decrease in the photosynthetic area to the damaged leaf was about $6{\sim}8%$.
The object of this study was to develop the control technology of daily integral photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) by the artificial lighting and shading screen in greenhouse. The shading time needed to get the target PPF by using two types of shading screens having shading ratio of 55% and 85% was analyzed. The results showed the shading ratio of screen to be installed in greenhouse should be different depending on the amount of target PPF to be controlled. The PPF control experiment by using the 55% shading screen in July and August showed that the maximum difference between measured and calculated value was about 5 mol$.$$m^{-2}$$.$$d^{-1}$ in no shading condition. This difference is satisfactory result because the daily integral PPF is quite different depending on the weather condition. The simulation result about PPF distribution pattern shortened the time needed to find the proper arrangement of artificial lightings in greenhouse. But the further study was required to find the supplemental lighting arrangement to be able to provide the exactly uniform distribution of target light intensity. The supplemental irradiation time needed to acquire the target daily integral PPF for different supplemental light intensities, weather conditions, and months was analyzed. The result showed that the supplemental light intensity should be decided depending on the amount of target PPF to be controlled. The result of PPF control experiment conducted by using 55% shading screen and 300 $\mu$mol$.$$m^{-2}$$.$$s^{-1}$ supplemental light intensity from the end of May to the beginning of June showed that the maximum difference between target and measured value was about 3 mol$.$$d^{-1}$$.$$m^{-2}$ . If we consider that the difference of the daily integral PPF depending on weather condition was the maximum 30 mol$.$$m^{-2}$$.$$d^{-l}$, the control effect was acceptable. Although the result of this study was the PPF control technology to grow lettuce, the data and control method obtained could be employed for other crop production.n.
This study was carried out to investigate the growth and physiological responses to shading treatment of 1-year-old containerized seedling of Quercus myrsinaefolia. Experimental process was conducted in a facility that consisted of compartments under the lighting control with full sunlight and shading (35%, 55% and 75% of full sunlight). Height and root collar diameter growth were high in the seedlings under both 35% and 55% shading. Regardless of shading level, root collar diameter growth lasted for more than 4 weeks compared to height growth. Highest H/D ratio was observed in the seedlings under 35% shading as 4.31, and the lowest ratio was 3.63 under 75% shading. It was found that seedlings under 55% shading showed highest dry mass production, which was followed in seedlings under 35% shading. In case of leaf dry weight ratio (LWR) after shading treatment, the highest value was 0.53 under 55% shading, and followed in seedlings under 35% shading as 0.52. But root dry weight ratio (RWR) was highest as 0.36 under 75% shading (highest level of shading). In terms of shading treatment, it was found that the higher level of shading had a tendency toward the higher content of chlorophyll a and the higher total chlorophyll content in the leaves of Quercus myrsinaefolia, but there was no significant difference in the content of chlorophyll b depending on the level of shading. It was found that high photosynthesis and transpiration rate were more correlated with high level of shading than full sunlight, but the rates of seedlings had a tendency to be higher under 35% and 55% shading than under 75% shading. The results on growth and physiological responses to different shading levels of 1-year-old containerized seedlings of Quercus myrsinaefolia could be useful in setting up the optimum light intensity for growth, and in estimating the shade tolerance of the species.

This study was carried out to investigate proper stem cutting position and air temperature to regenerate roots from cuttings of bitter gourd. 'NS454' (NS) and 'Dragon' (DR) cultivars were tested and the cutting position was cut at the 3rd node in the stem (treatment I) and cut at the central part (stem segment) between 3rd leaf and 4th leaf in the stem (treatment II). The air temperature was maintained at 18, 23, 28 and $35^{\circ}C$ in the growth chambers, respectively. The photosynthetic photon flux at the ground of a chamber was maintained in approximately $150-200{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ during the 16-hour photoperiod. The relative humidity in the chambers was maintained over 85%. After 10 days of cuttings, regardless of cutting position, DR and NS cultivars showed 100% the survival rate in the $18^{\circ}C$ or $23^{\circ}C$ treatments, however, most of plants $18^{\circ}C$ treatment had not rooting. In the $28^{\circ}C$ treatment, regardless of cutting position, DR and NS cultivars showed 100% of the rooting rate. In the $23^{\circ}C$ treatment, for DR cultivar, the node cutting showed 90% of rooting rate and the stem segment cutting showed 40% rooting rate. For NS cultivar, the node cutting showed 50% of rooting rate and the stem segment cutting showed 40% rooting rate. DR and NS cultivars have high rooting rate, while the rooting rate remarkably decreased in the $35^{\circ}C$ treatment. For DR cultivar, the stem segment cutting showed 5.3 of the highest rooting number and the node cutting showed 2.7 rooting number in the $28^{\circ}C$ treatment. NS cultivar was not significantly different the rooting regardless of cutting position. The results suggested that cutting at the stem segment cutting of bitter gourd is an effective cutting method for increasing survival rate and the air temperature should be maintained at $28^{\circ}C$.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of light quality using either monochromatic or combined LEDs on the growth and antioxidant accumulation of Agastache rugosa cultivated under hydroponics for 4 weeks. This experiment was performed in a controlled-environment room at $22{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ and $18{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ (day and night temperatures, respectively) and 50-70% relative humidity, with a provided photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of $180{\pm}5{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ and irradiated with either monochromatic (W10 and R10) or mixed LEDs (W2B1G1, R3B1, R2B1G1, and W2B1G1) with a differing ratio of each LED's PPFD and fluorescent lighting (FL: control) with a 16/8 h photoperiod. Fresh and dry weights were highest for plants grown under the W2B1G1 treatment. A. rugosa grown with R10 had the greatest plant height but the lowest SPAD among all treatments. The concentration of rosmarinic acid in plants grown under W2B1G1 was significantly higher than that of plants grown under other treatments. Tilianin content was significantly higher in R3B1 than in the other treatments. However, whole-plant rosmarinic acid and tilianin content was the highest under the W2B1G1 condition. To cultivate A. rugosa in a plant factory, mixed-LED light conditions with W2B1G1 is considered to be more advantageous for the growth and antioxidant accumulation of A. rugosa. It is though that the total whole-plant antioxidant content is more crucial for commercial use; the present study demonstrates the potential to achieve higher content of functional materials in plants through the selection of light quality.
