Papers made from unbleached and bleached bagasse chemimechanical pulp were chemically modified by acetylation. The effects of irradiation on unbleached and bleached also reduced papers of bagasse chemimechanical pulp before and after acetylation were investigated in this study. Chemimechanical pulp was prepared from bagasse and then bleached with hydrogen peroxide. Unbleached and hydrogen bleached pulps were reduced by Sodium borohydride in different procedures. Paper sheets were prepared from pulps and then acetylated using a technical grade of acetic anhydride. Accelerated photo-aging was run on the samples using fluorescent lamps to verify photo-stability of paper sheets before and after pretreatments. Brightness reversion (as Post-color number) and other optical properties of the paper sheets were measured. Efficient inhibition of photo-yellowing of papers made from bagasse CMP was achieved by acetylation. The acetylated unbleached CMP was noticeably photo-bleached during irradiation. Sodium borohydride reduction followed by acetylation had the same effect as acetylation alone at the same degree of reaction time and reductive treatment did not affect the yellowing rate to any great extent. The pre-reduced, acetylated unbleached papers were, however, not brightened during irradiation. Calculation done by Kubelka-Munk equation showed that reductive treatment had little effect in reducing the photo-yellowing of paper made from CMP pulp; a small stabilization effect was observed in the case of bleached CMP, while unbleached CMP was slightly more prone to discolor in the later phase of photo-reversion. The improved stability towards light may was closely related to the decrease in the phenolic hydroxyl content as a result of blocking by acetyl groups during treatment with acetic anhydride. The results support the hypothesis that phenolic hydroxyl has an important role in the process of photo-reversion of high-yield pulps. The results obtained in this study demonstrate that the acetylation of paper manufactured from peroxide bleached Bagasse CMP significantly retards light-induced discoloration. The inhibition of yellowing is connected with a decrease in the phenolic hydroxyl content of both unbleached and peroxide bleached papers.
Lettuce, a typical light-induced seed germination type, exhibits different germination responses according to cultivars, light quality, and plant growth regulator (PGR) treatments. Germination rates in most tested cultivars were over 85% under both white and red light, and were slightly decreased by blue light. Although photo-inhibition in germination was observed from most cultivars by far-red light, 'Cheongguangcheongchima', 'Okdol', and 'Manchudaecheongchima' could be classified as photo-insensitive lettuce cultivars by exhibiting the germination rates as 78,63, and 48% under for-red light, respectively. 6-Benzylamino purine (BAP) and kinetin promoted seed germination and normal seedling production under far-red light, but ethephon did not show any positive effects. Cytokinins such as BAP, kinetin, thidiazuron (TDZ), and zeatin overcame photo-inhibition of seed germination even the concentration of below $50\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. However, auxins such as IBA, 2,4-D, and NAA failed to overcome the far-red light-induced photo-inhibition.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation causes inflammation and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) over-expression and extra cellular matrix depletion, leading to skin photo-aging such as wrinkle formation, dryness, and sagging. In this study, we demonstrated that pretreatment with the hexane extract of microalgae protects UVB mediated cell damages. The results of clinical study showed that Microalgal Oil treated group reduced wrinkle and improve elasticity. All these results suggest Microalgal Oil may be useful as new photo-aging cosmetics for protection against UV induced activity.
The effect of the silicon acrylate as a reactive additive on the UV-curing photopolymerization reaction was studied by micro raman technique. For the study, acrylate systems and Darocur 1173 were used as oligomer and monomers, and a photo initiator, respectively. The content of silicon acrylate was within the range of 0-3 wt%. The extent of photo-polymerization reaction as a function of depth from the air interface was obtained from the conversion ratio of acrylate double bond calculated from the intensities of measured bands at $1410cm^{-1}$ and at $1635cm^{-1}$. Micro raman spectroscopic technique can be an useful tool for the investigation of the factors, which can affect the reaction progress, such as oxygen inhibition, composition of the formulations, depth, etc.
In this study, extracts from the Green ball apple peel (GBE) and the newly bred green ball apple from Korea showed inhibition effects on photo-aging factor regulation associated with skin aging. To investigate the inhibition effect on photo-aging factor regulation in skin, GBE was treated with UVB to induce photo-aging related factors in CCD986sk fibroblast cells. Photo-aging factor regulation effects showed that GBE inhibited UVB-stimulated matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 and MMP-9 protein synthesis in collagen type I alpha 2 chain (COL1A2), MMP-1, MMP-9, and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1 protein expression. The expression of COL1A2 and TIMP-1 protein was significantly increased. The mRNA expression levels of COL1A2, MMP-1, MMP-9, hyaluronan synthase (HAS)2, transforming growth factor (TGF)-β, and TIMP-1 were decreased by GBE. The expression of TIMP-1 and TGF-β, which are regulators involved in matrix metalloproteinase and type I procollagen expression, was found to increase with increasing expression of COL1A2. The expression of HAS2, which is involved in the production of hyaluronic acid, one of the structural proteins constituting the skin, was also confirmed. Therefore, GBE showed excellent efficacy against photo-aging factor regulation and could be used as functional material to prevent and treat skin aging.

In order to give pulp surfaces anti-bacterial functionality and photo-catalytic deodorant ability, functional pulps was made using a surface modification method with Ag nano-colloidal solution and $TiO_2$ filler. Hygiene paper was made with the specially modified pulp, and anti-bacterial and deodorant tests were carried out. The Ag nano-colloidal solution was coated on the surface of the pulp using the high pressurized gas phase squirt through the spray nozzle mounted on the hybridization system. The surface modified functional pulp was hybridized with the optimum ratio of $TiO_2$(fine particle) to pulp(core particle) under the condition of $6,000{\sim}10,000$ rpm for $3{\sim}7$ minutes in the system. The anti-bacterial functionality of the hygiene paper was confirmed by the halo test in which the formation of the clear zone around the hygiene paper sample was observed. The inhibition growth test using MIC bioscreen C showed the inhibition growth effect of the bacteria as the reaction time was increased. The photo-catalytic effect measurement of the $TiO_2$ for 4 hours of the reaction showed $50{\sim}60%$ of decomposition rate, reaching over 60% for 5 hours of the reaction.
A new concept of "photo" -antisense method has been evaluated, where the inhibition of gene expression by the conventional antisense method is enhanced by photochemical binding between antisense oligonucleotides conjugated with photo-reactive compound and target mRNA or DNA. Fluorescein labeled oligodeoxyribonucleotides (F-DNA) was delivered to cell nuclei in the encapsulated form in multilamellar lecithin liposomes with neutral charge. F-DNA was previously shown to photo-bind to the complementary stranded DNA, and the delivery system using neutral liposome to be effective in normal human keratinocytes. In the present study, we used human kidney cancer G401.2/6TG.1 cell line to be advantageous in reproducible experiments. p53 was adopted as a target gene since antisense sequence information has been accumulated. The nuclear localization ofF-DNA was identified by comparing the fluorescence ofF-DNA with that of Hoechst 33258 under fluorescence microscope. After 7hr incubation to accumulate p53 protein induced by UV -B, p53 protein was quantified by Western blot. After 2hrs from F-DNA application, about 30% of cell population incorporated F-DNA in their nuclei with some morphological change possibly due to liposomal toxicity. Irradiation of visible light longer than 400nm from solar simulator at this time enhanced the inhibitory action of antisense F-DNA. The present results suggest that photo-antisense method is promising to control gene expression in time and space dependent manner. Further improvement of F-DNA delivery to cancer cells in the stability and toxicity is in progress. progress.
Surface properties and curing behavior of UV-initiated photopolymerization with and without wax have been investigated by pendulum hardness, pencil hardness, gloss, photo-differential scanning calorimetry (photo-DSC) and SEM. In addition, the influence of wax type (paraffin wax, PE wax) on the various properties of UV cured films was studied. The results showed that the wax type was the significant factor affecting gloss and surface hardness of UV cured films. Specially, the photo-DSC results showed that ${\Delta}H$ for the UV cured films containing paraffin wax was higher than the corresponding values for the formulation without wax and with PE wax. The observed results clearly demonstrate that the photopolymerization of UV curing with paraffin wax in an air atmosphere is less inhibited by the oxygen compared to UV curing without wax and with PE wax.
Self-photoinitiating acrylate (SPIA) which can undergo self-initiation under UV irradiation was synthesized by a Michael addition in the presence of a base catalyst. The SPIA polymerizations were investigated by photo-differential scanning calorimeter (photo-DSC) and surface physical properties such as pendulum hardness and pencil hardness. The results showed that the SPIA can cure upon UV irradiation by itself without a photoinitiator. But we found out that both the curing rate and the conversion were too low for the self-curing reaction of SPIA. In order to improve the SPIA curing properties, we introduced the SPIA/cationic hybrid system and observed the effects of the addition of commercial free radical type monomer and photoinitiator on the curing behaviors. SPIA/cationic hybrid system was the best suitable to improve the SPIA curing properties. The kinetic analysis indicated that the cationic monomer and photoinitiator apparently accelerated the cure reaction and rate of the hybrid SPIA system, mostly due to the synergistic effect of cationic monomer and photoinitiator increasing the mobility of active species and the generation of reactive species (free radical, cation) during the photopolymerization process. The physical properties showed that, unlike typical free radical system, the hybrid systems did not show oxygen inhibition effect because of cationic reaction on the coating surface.
The photoprotective effects of minerals from Korean indigenous ores, consisting mainly of sericite, on UVA-irradiated human dermal fibroblast (HDF) were examined. Zymographic analysis showed that the treatment of the minerals significantly reduced the UVA-enhanced MMP-1 activity and mRNA level. The minerals also showed strong inhibitory effect on MMP-2 activity and mRNA expression. Moreover, the minerals were better than polyphenol in reducing MMP-1 and MMP-2 expressions. Notably, the minerals significantly enhanced collagen biosynthesis in the HDF. Inhibition of the elastase activity and protection against the oxidatively damaged HDF cell were also found in the presence of the minerals. Taken together, the ore minerals may be used as the potent photo-protective and anti-skin-aging ingredients which can prevent skin cell damage by UVA.
