We investigated the seasonal variability of tree alkaline phosphatase activity in seawater and alkaline phosphatase hydrolysable phosphorus (APHP) at 3 stations in Hiroshima Bay using alkaline phosphatase extracted from the dinoflagellates Alexandrium tamarense and Gymnodinium catenatum. The dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) was lower than $1\;{\mu}M$ all samples; the lowest values were in May. The amount of APHP was high at the surface and bottom waters of all stations in May, showing DIP-depleted conditions. In August and November, the amount of APHP was much less than the amount of APHP in May, indicating that the availability of dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) for these species was low and/or uptake during the dinoflagellate blooming might have occurred in the area. The results obtained from short-term variations of AP activity might suggest that the growth of dinoflagellates in this season may be partly supported by the AP produced by other diatoms.
Proximate, calcium, phosphorus and amino acid composition were determined for sardine fish meal (SM), herring fish meal (HM), anchovy fish meal (AM), alaskapolack by-product meal (ABM) and file fish by-product meal (FBM) produced domestically. These fish protein sources were fed to adult male of meat type (Waren G) broiler chicks to determine the true availability of amino acids. The true availability of essential amino acids were closely related to various fish meals with a few exceptions (e.g. valine, methionine, isoleucine and leucine). Average true availability of essential amino acids (9 amino acids) were 95, 93, 93, 91 and 91 percent for AM, SM, FBM; HM and ABM, respectively. Significant differences in the true availability of each individual amino acid were observed among fish meal tested (P<0.01). Lysine availability was low in HM, ABM and FBM whereas phenylalanine was the lowest in FBM and ABM, respectively. AM showed the highest true amino acid availability among all fish meal tested.
The present study was conducted to investigate a supplemental effect of magnesium hydrogen phosphate (MHP, $MgHPO_4$) as an alternative phosphorus (P) source on growth and feed utilization of juvenile far eastern catfish (Silurus asotus) in comparison with three conventional P additives (monocalcium phosphate (MCP), dicalcium phosphate (DCP) and tricalcium phosphate [TCP]) as positive controls. A basal diet as a negative control was prepared without P supplementation and four supplemental P sources were added at the level of 2%. Five groups of 450 fish having mean body weight of 11.3 g following 24 h fasting after three week adaptation period were randomly distributed into each of 15 tanks (30 fish/tank). Fish were hand-fed to apparent satiety twice a day for 8 weeks. Fish fed MHP had weight gain (WG), protein efficiency ratio and specific growth rate comparable to those fed MCP. Fish fed MHP and MCP had feed efficiency (FE) significantly higher (p<0.05) than those fed DCP. Fish groups fed control and TCP showed the lower FE than the other groups which was significantly different (p<0.05) from those of fish fed the other diets. Survival rate was not significantly different (p>0.05) among treatments. Fish fed control had the lowest hematocrit, which was significantly different (p<0.05) from that of fish fed MHP. Fish fed MCP and MHP had plasma P higher (p<0.05) than fish fed the other diets. Relative efficiencies of MCP, DCP and TCP to MHP were found to be 100.5 and 101.3%, 92.0 and 91.6%, and 79.1 and 80.9% for WG and FE, respectively. P availability was determined to be 88.1%, 75.2%, 8.7%, and 90.9% for MCP, DCP, TCP, and MHP, respectively. Consequently, MHP recovered from wastewater stream showed that as an alternative P source its performance was comparative with MCP on growth and feed utilization of juvenile far eastern catfish.
In this study, we assessed the efficacy of a novel B. amyloliquefacience DS11 phytase (DS11 phytase) and that of a commercial Aspergillus ficcum phytase (AF phytase) through their bioavailabilities of phytin-posphorus and -calcium in the diet using cannulated pigs. For the purpose of evaluating the efficacy of the phytases in pigs, we determined phosphorous concentrations from serum and feces, in addition to ingesta obtained from the cannula at the terminal ileum. As results, phosphorus concentration was lower in feces from DS11 group and BASF group by 17% and 10%, and higher in serum from the respective groups by 34% and 20%, as compared to the control group. Both phytases are evaluated to enhance phosphorus availability to the great extent. Calcium concentration of feces were lower in DS11 group and BASF group by 31% and 10%, than that in the control. Calcium concentration of serum was higher in DS11 phytase group by 4% but lower in AF phyase group by 3%, then that in the control group.
The morphological characteristics of granules developing in anaerobic-anoxic (An-Ax) and anaerobic-aerobic (An-Ox) sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were examined. The granules developed in the both SBRs after 200 days of laboratory operation. The average diameters of the granules were $2.2{\pm}1.7mm$ in the An-Ax SBR and $0.4{\pm}0.3mm$ in the An-Ox SBR. To determine the possible factors affecting morphology of granules a comparative analysis of various operating conditions from reference data indicated that the availability and type of electron acceptors is a key factor determining the granulation process and granular morphology.

A review of factors influencing grass and clover establishment, survival and yield at oversowing was made from the experimental results of home and abroad. The following conclusions are considered: (1) The existing vegetation present at oversowing appeared to be the most critical factor reducing establishment and survival of grass. Therefore, it is essential to check competition from the native vegetation before oversowing. (2) Although lime had comparatively little effect on yield of grassland, the general effect of lime should be more emphasized under our acid soil conditions to promote the availability of all the essential elements and the growth of microorganisms, and to reduce the toxic effects of nutrients. One to two tons of lime per ha at oversowing would be useful. (3) Phosphorus is one of the nutrients most generally deficient in grassland soils of Korea, consequently, this nutrients applied at oversowing is very effective. Application as much as 200kg of phosphorus per ha would be essential. (4) The effect of nitrogen on the establishment and survival of grass depends on the amount and density of the herbage present. The use of nitrogen in dense herbage adversely affected grass establishment and survival, possible because the fertilizer stimulated the growth of the eisting herbage. Around 40kg of nitrogen per ha may be enough at oversowing (5) Potassium is not as universally deficient in soils of native grassland as phosphorus. Therefore, it cannot be over-emphasized at oversowing. Studies determinig the optimum amount of potassium at of oersowing are needed.
Most of the lakes in Korea are artificial, and their limnological characteristics are significantly different from those of natural lakes in other countries. In this study, the relationship between trophic state parameters was investigated, based on summer average data of the upper layer, in 81 lakes in Korea, 2013-2017. Compared with trends of foreign natural lakes, chlorophyll a (Chl.a) concentration was slightly lower at the same total phosphorus (TP) concentration, and transparency (Secchi depth, SD) was noticeably lower at the same Chl.a concentration. This is because of excessive allochthonous loading of non-algal material during the monsoon period, and the reduction in phosphorus availability to algal growth, by light limitation and short hydraulic residence time. Considering these characteristics, we suggested site-specific thresholds of trophic state classification for Chl.a, TP and SD, based on annual average data at the upper layer of lakes ($3-10{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ of Chl.a measured by UNESCO method; $13-33{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ of TP; 1.6-3.2 m of SD for mesotrophic state class, respectively). The threshold value of TP for each trophic state class, corresponded to the upper value of previously reported range, and that of SD was out of the range. We suggested applying only TP and Chl.a in assessment of trophic state of lakes in Korea, excluding SD.

Greenhouse gas emissions are one of the critical factors that drive change in rice cropping systems. Within this changing system, less water irrigation and chemical fertilizer are seriously considered, as well combining precision farming technologies with irrigation control. Water and phosphorus (P) fertilizer are two of the most critical inputs in rice cultivation. Due to the lack of water availability in the system, P fertilizer is not available, especially in acidic soil conditions. Moreover, the various types of abiotic stresses, such as drought, high temperature, salinity, submergence, and limited fertilizer result in significant yield loss in the system. Even in the late stage of growth, the waves caused by diseases and insects make the field more unfruitful. Therefore, agronomists and breeders need to identify the secondary phenotypes to estimate the yield loss of when stress appears. The prediction will be clearer if we have a set of markers tagging the causal variation and the associated precise phenotype indices. Although there have been various studies for abiotic stress tolerance, we still lack functional molecular markers and phenotype indices. This is due to the underlying challenges caused by environmental factors in highly unpredictable regional and yearly environmental conditions in the field system. Pupl (phosphorus uptake 1) is still known as the first QTL associated with phosphorus uptake and have been validated in different field crops. Interestingly, some pyramiding lines of Pupl and other QTLs for other stress tolerances showed preferable phenotypes in the yield. Precise physiological studies with the help of genomics are on-going and some results will be discussed.
Effects of various concentrations of copper in solid fibrous form and methylglyoxal (MG) on phosphorus uptake and growth change of green algae Scenedesmus obliquus were studied. There was significant differences among cultures treated with various concentrations of copper and MG in growth of algae with parameters of cell numbers, photosynthetic rate and cellular morphology, and phosphorus uptake by cell. When the copper in media is treated with 25 mg or 50 mg per 100 ml of Bristol solution, the mean cell number of algae was 15.642${\times}$10$\^$6/ cells$.$ml$\^$-1/ and 12.986${\times}$10$\^$6/ cells$.$ml$\^$-1/, respectively, while those of algae in culture without copper was 18.486${\times}$10$\^$6/ cells$.$ml$\^$-1/. The mean cell area of 2450 ${\mu}$m$^2$, 1894 ${\mu}$m$^2$and 1697 ${\mu}$m$^2$in basic media, basic media with 25 mg of copper and basic media with 50 mg of copper was showed the inhibitory effect of copper on algal growth. The algal growth was stimulated by MG when the culture was treated with 25 mg of copper or without copper, while it was inhibited when the culture was treated with 50 mg of copper. It was considered that there was significant interaction between copper and MG on algal growth. The phosphorus concentration in algal medium treated with 25 mg or 50 mg of copper was 29.435 ppm and 26.224 ppm, respectively, while those of algae in culture without copper was 52.8 ppm, which shows that the application of copper in algal medium can prevent the availability of phosphorus to algal cell.
Pot experiments were conducted to evaluate the phosphorus (P) availability with cropping in soils where P were highly accumulated. Bray 1-P contents of the used three soils were 584, 695 and $1043P\;mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. Corn ${\rightarrow}$ Chinese cabbage ${\rightarrow}$ Chinese cabbage ${\rightarrow}$ corn were sequentially grown from 1996 to 1998. P fertilizer was applied at three levels of 0 (P0), recommended application rate (P1), and double of recommended application rate (P2). At the end of each crop growth, available P content was determined by methods of Bray 1-P, Olsen-P and Lancaster-P. The growth of crops were not significantly affected by the rates of P applications. The relative yields of PO treatment were more than 88% of P1 treatment. The recoveries of added phosphorus were relatively low due to the high content of available phosphorus in soils. Although available phosphorus contents decreased through cropping, the concentration of soil available phosphorus was maintained high level even after the final cropping. In the case of P0 treatment in the three soils, the residual concentration was in the range of $410{\sim}610mg\;kg^{-1}$ for Bray 1-P, $284{\sim}410mg\;kg^{-1}$ for Olsen-P and $368{\sim}524mg\;kg^{-1}$ for Lancaster-P. The amount of soil available phosphorus decreased during the experiments was linearly regressed with high significance to the amount of P taken up by crops. The regressions of soil 1 as follow, Bray 1-P : y=149.7x=102.7, Lancaster-P : y=209.2x-140.2, Olsen-P: y=60.8x=19.9. The decrease rate of available phosphorus in the P0 treatment with cropping was described by an equation of first-order chemical reaction. The equation of soil1 was as follow: Bray 1-P: In(C)= -0.12N + 6.96 r=-0.991, Lancaster-P: In(C)= -0.14N = 6.88 r= -0.938, Olsen-P: In(C)= -0.07N = 6.37 r= -0.959. The rate constants seemed to be affected by ply, sand and silt content, and exchangeable $Ca^{2+}$ concentration. The times of cropping needed to reduce the content of available P to half of the initial or to the index level could be predicted by using that equation.
