Changes of low concentrated nitrogen-phosphate removal efficiency were investigated in 4 strains of marine bacteria applied to ceramic media. Marine bacteria were isolated and identified from Gwangyang bay. Growth rates and removal efficiencies of $NH_3$-N of 4 strains of marine bacteria applied to ceramic media were increased approximately 3 fold and over 30% than control group, respectively. A. hydrophila and P. diminuta had highest ${NO_3}^-$-N and phosphate removal efficiencies, respectively. This results showed that ceramic media is very nice material for improvement of nitrogen-phosphate removal efficiency and isolated marine bacteria may be useful to control nitrogen-phosphate at low concentration in field.

The experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of phosphate fertilizer level on growth, crude protein content and nitrogen fixation ability of alfalfa(Medicugo sariva L.) at sowing year. The experimental field was conducted using a randomized block design with three replications according to the phosphate application level (200 and 400kfia) in farm of Kongju National University. Research samples were collected at intervals of 7 days from October 7 to December 9 and nitrogen fixation activity of nodule was measured by using the acetylene reduction method (Hardy et al. 1968). The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Number of branches, root length and dry matter weight at phosphate fertilizer level of 400kg in sowing year were more increase than those of 200kfia. The number of nodules was not significantly difference between phosphate fertilizer level, because of low temperature to be enough to nodulation of alfalfa. 2. The crude protein content of leaf, stem and root were not significantly affected by the phosphate fertilizer level. but that of leaf was increased at 400kgha on 72 days after sowing. The crude protein content of each part according to growing stages was increased at 44 days and 72 days after sowing. 3. The dry weight of root was not significantly difference between phosphate fertilizer level from 30 days to 51 days after sowing, but that was increased at phosphate fertilizer level of 400kgha from 51 days afier sowing. 4. The amount of ethylene in the samples taken 2 hours and calculated amount of nitrogen fixation were increased at phosphate fertilizer level of 400kfia from 30 days to 65 days after sowing. but there was vice versa from 58 days after sowing.
Production of human granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (hGM-CSF) by Nicotiana tabacum cell suspension culture was studied in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium with sucrose as a carbon source, ammonium nitrate and potassium nitrate as nitrogen sources, potassium dihydrogen phosphate and sodium dihydrogen phosphate hydrate as phosphate sources, respectively. Optimum concentrations for carbon, nitrogen, phosphate was determined to enhance the production of hGM-CSF. Cell growth was better at high initial sucrose concentration (60 g/L), high initial nitrogen concentration (121.04 mM). Maximum cell density (18.28 g/L) was obtained at 60 g/L of sucrose after 14 days. Cell growth was not so good at low initial sucrose concentration 00 g/L), but the highest hGM-CSF production was obtained at the latter half of exponential phase. hGM-CSF production increased about 3 fold at initial phosphate concentration of 4.96 nM
For mass production of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), high cell density cultures of Ralstonia eutropha were carried out in 2.5-1 and 60-1 fermentors by two fed-batch culture techniques of nitrogen and phosphate limitation. When the nitrogen limitation technique was employed using both an on-line glucose monitoring and control system, a high concentration level of PHB (121g/l) was obtained in the small-scale fermentor of 2.5 1. However, the PHB concentration obtained in a large-scale fermentor of 60 1 only turned out to be 60g/l. In contrast, when another fed-batch culture technique of the phosphate-limitation employing dissolved oxygen (DO) stat glucose feeding was used, a large amount of PHB was successfully produced in both 60-1 and 2.5-1 fermentors. In a 2.5-1 fermentor, concentrations of PHB and cells obtained in 58 h were 175 and 210 g/l, respectively, which corresponded to the PHB productivity level of 3.02 g/l/h. In a 60-1 fermentor, a final cell concentration of 221 g/l and a PHB concentration of 180 g/l with PHB productivity level of 3.75 g/l/h were obtained in 48h. PHB content and yield from glucose were 81% and 0.38g PHB/g glucose, respectively. These data suggest that the phosphate limitation technique is more effective compared to nitrogen limitation in the mass production of PHB by R. eutropha of a large scale.
To test for the effect of applied fertilizer and nutrients on uptake and transport for paddy rice, two paddy field trials were conducted with Dongjinbyeo in degenerated salt paddy field of Jeonbuk series from 1999 to 2000. After experiment, soil acidity, content of organic matter phosphate, silicate, potassium, calcium, and total nitrogen was increased by application of fresh cattle manure(FCM). Content of Nitrogen in soil layer leached inorganic nitrogen $NO_3$ was higher that that of $NH_4$ and was high in treatment of FCM. Content of $PO_4$ was higher in FCM than other treatments. But content of potassium was in high control. During the growth of rice plant, the amount of water consumption was 477mm. The amount of supplied nitrogen was high in treatment of no nitrogen(NN), 20% reduced application of LCU(LCU-20%), and no fertilizer. In case of phosphate, the supplied amount was more than the consumed amount with the exception of treatment "no phosphate(NP) and no fertilizer(NF)". In case of potassium, the consumed amount was more than the supplied amount in all treatments. The amount of applied nitrogen in the nutrient infiltrated water was high in treatment soil test(ST), C+FCM+Si(Silicate) and the ratio of recovered nitrogen was high in 20% reduced application of LCU. The amount of applied phosphate in the nutrient infiltrated water was high in FCM and that of applied potassium was high in 20% reduced application of LCU. Nitrogen use efficiency of paddy rice was high in 20% reduced application of LCU and use efficiency of phosphate and potassium was high in C+Si(Silicate). Grain yield of rice was high in order of 20% reduced application of LCU>C+Si=C+FCM+Si>C+FCM.
Phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms were isolated from agricultural area in Korea, and the solubilizing potential of microorganisms was evaluated in vitro. Of the several microorganisms Pseudomonas putida, Penicillium sp., and Aspergillus niger showed solubilization in all phosphatic compounds such as hydroxyapatite, tricalcium phosphate, aluminium phosphate and rock phosphate tested. Inorganic P solubilization was directly related to the pH drop by each microorganisms. Aspergillus niger was found to be more active in solubilizing phosphate than Pseudomonas putida and Penicillium sp.. The maximum concentration of phosphorus released from each of aluminium phosphate, hydroxyapatite and tri-calcium phosphate by Aspergillus niger in liquid culture was 776ppm, 665ppm and 593ppm, respectively when $KNO_3$ was added as nitrogen source. For rock phosphate, it was 411ppm with ammonium sulfate as nitrogen source.
This research was carried out investigate the removed T-P, T-N and anion surfactants using Autoclaved Lightweight Concrete(ALC) in wastewater treatment system. Effects of pH, TDS on aqueous solution was measured. Specific area which measured by BET was $27.66m^2/g$. The phosphorous, nitrogen and anion surfactants removal efficiencies were examined by using artificial waste water(T-P : 66~73mg/L, T-N : 56~136mg/L and anion surfactants : 10~31mg/L). The results showed that the ALC was effective material as a adsorbent due to the structure and porosity. It was found that anion surfactants removed was 85~95%, phosphate removed was 92% and nitrogen removed was 90% in artificial wastewater. Agitation process was more effective than aeration process in that case of nitrogen removal system using ALC.

In this research, ${NH_4}^+-N$ and ${PO_4}^{3-}-P$ in wastewater were removed by crystallization. Nitrogen and phosphate have been regarded as key nutrients in the eutrophication of rivers and lakes. Struvite, $MgNH_4PO_4{\cdot}6H_2O$, is insoluble in alkaline solutions. Fertilizer industry wastewater contains organic and nitrogen concentration of 330 mg/L and 550 mg/L, respectively. Nitrogen in this wastewater cannot be treated by conventional biological treatment without physicochemical pretreatment, because nitrogen concentration is relatively high compared to organic concentration. Magnesium ions used in this study were from bittern and commercial magnesium salts of $MgCl_2$ and $Mg(OH)_2$. Bittern obtained as a by-product of seasalt manufacture contains $8,000mg\;Ca^{2+}/L$ and $32,000mg\;Mg^{2+}/L$. Optimum initial pH was 10.5~11.0 and the reaction was complete or done in 2 min. Nitrogen removal efficiency using bittern, $MgCl_2 $ and $Mg(OH)_2$ (as source of $Mg^{2+}$) was 71 %, 81% and 83%. respectively. Phosphate removal efficiency was 99%, 98% and 93%, respectively. Therefore, bittern, $MgCl_2$ and $Mg(OH)_2$ can be efficiently used as $Mg^{2+}$ source for crystallization of nitrogen and phosphate. However, bittern is economically favorable $Mg^{2+}$ source for removing nitrogen and phosphate in wastewater.
This study was conducted to establish standard fertilization rates for the cultivation of Korean valerian(Valeriana fauriei var. dasycarpa Hara) which is useful for medicinal and aromatic resources. Nitrogen, phosphate and potassium were treated with four application levels, 0, 6, 9, 12kg per 10a, and the growth characteristics, root yield and essential oil compositions of valerian were measured. The growth and root yield of valerian were the highest in the rate of 9kg per 10a for nitrogen, phosphate and potassium, respectively. Nitrogen had the most powerful effective followed by potassium and phosphate. The contents and compositions of essential oil also varied with the amount of fertilization. The contents of the essential oil was the highest in the application level of 9kg per 10a for nitrogen, phosphate and potassium, respectively. The essential oil compositions were affected by the fertilization rate.

BACKGROUND: The nutrient balance in Korea during 1985-2006 had continually increased and maintained the highest levels among OECD countries. The use of green manure crops such as barley and hairy vetch is common practice for reducing chemical fertilizer application and maintaining soil fertility. However, green manure crops can also be used as a livestock feeding material which may reduce nutrient balance in the national scale. We calculated nitrogen and phosphate balance under green manure-rice cultivating system where all green manure was removed and used for feeding livestock. METHODS AND RESULTS: The barley and hairy vetch grown in pure stands or in mixtures with different sowing rates were tested for rice cultivation without chemical fertilization. The conventional fertilization (NPK) for rice cultivation was selected to compare nutrient balance with green manure-rice cultivation. Nitrogen and phosphate balance were calculated according to the surface balance method of the PARCOM guidelines. Total aboveground biomass of mixture (barley and hairy vetch) was higher compared to that of pure barley or hairy vetch. Among the mixture with barley and hairy vetch, the highest aboveground biomass was observed in B75H25 (barley 75%+hairy vetch 25%). The nitrogen and phosphate balance in the B75H25 mixture was-104 kg N/ha and-50.3 kg P/ha, respectively. CONCLUSION(S): The barley and hairy vetch mixture proved to be a very effective strategy for biomass production of green manure. The amount of nitrogen and phosphate fertilizer to be applied is estimated to be 104 kg N/ha and 50.3 kg P/ha in order to maintain soil fertility if all green manure and rice straw were removed from rice field for livestock feeding.
