A Phenomenological Approach to Experiences of Young Children's Mothers on Respected Parents & Respected Children Parent Education Program (유아기 자녀를 둔 어머니들의 부모존경-자녀존중 부모교육 참가 경험에 대한 현상학적 접근)

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of the young children's mothers who participated in Respected Parents & Respected Children(RPRC) through a phenomenological approach. Data were collected from 9 mothers of preschool children using weekly journals, self-reported worksheets, observer's descriptive notes and reflective notes, and semi-structured pre-interviews and post-interviews to share their experiences regarding their participation in the program. From a phenomenological study, that is one of the qualitative analysis methods, 7 theme categories and 16 lower categories emerged. Theme categories were (1) the intrinsic motivation for participation in parent education program, (2) the beginning of change: mother, (3) the beginning of change: children, (4) the lasting conflicts, (5) the absence of positive parent's role model and intergenerational transmission of parenting, (6) the raising parenting efficacy, (7) the emotional supporting experience from parent education program and expectations of the continuous education course. Discussions and the implications for support practices and interventions were provided.

The Phenomenological Study on the Sense of Pressure Shown from the Family Adjustment Experience of Mothers-in-Law with Married Immigrant Women (외국인 며느리를 맞이한 시어머니의 가족적응경험에서 나타난 부담감에 대한 현상학적 연구)

  • The purpose of the phenomenological study was to explore the sense of pressure shown from the family adjustment experience according to mothers-in-law's perception and to enrich our understanding about multicultural families. In order to accomplish the purpose of research, 5 mothers-in-law with married immigrant women participated. Data were collected through in-depth interview. In addition, the data were analyzed by a Colaizzi's phenomenological analysis. The findings showed that the meaning of family adjustment experience in mothers-in-law with married immigrant women were identified as 31 themes and 7 categories. The 7 categories consisted of "The sense of pressure of son's marriage", "The sense of pressure of an unsatisfactory daughter-in-law", "The sense of pressure of unfair treatment by a daughter-in-law", "The sense of pressure of living with concerned son and his wife", "The sense of pressure of having a foreign daughter-in-law", "The sense of pressure of dependnet daughter-in-law's parents", "The sense of pressure of the future". Based on the findings, we discussed the meaning of family adjustment experience in mothers-in-law with married immigrant women. And lastly, this results made suggestions for the social welfare policies and practices for them and their families.

A Phenomenological Study of Gifted Class Management by the Teachers of Elementary Gifted Class in Science (단위학교 초등과학영재학급 영재교사의 영재교육 운영에 대한 현상학적 탐색)

  • This study attempted to examine the significance of experience in the gifted class management. The participants of the this study were teachers of the science gifted classe in elementary school located in Seoul. The study was conducted in interviews with four teachers of the science gifted class that individually used their own gifted programs. The interviews were analyzed by applying a phenomenological method of analysis derived from Giorgi. Data collection focused on the feelings, thoughts, behaviors, and changes in life of the teachers of the gifted in order to analyze the experience of the research participants. As a result, 123 significant statements were deduced; based on these significant statements, 26 themes and 12 focal meanings were examined closely. Then, the focal meanings were combined to propose situated structural descriptions of the significance of experiences from the perspective of participants. At the same time, by integrating the situated structural descriptions of the individual participants, the experiences of the teachers of the science gifted class were organized as a general structural description. This study examined in depth the experiences of the teachers of the gifted who are the subjects of the gifted class management through a phenomenological method, and also attempted to examine what these teachers wanted on site and what their experiences with the gifted education meant to them. The implications in understanding the problems of the science gifted education in individual elementary schools and in improving the gifted class management were suggested.

A Phenomenological Study on the Child-rearing Experience of North Korean Female Defectors with Young Children (영유아기 자녀를 둔 북한이탈여성의 자녀양육에 관한 현상학적 연구)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to learn from Korean female defectors about their views of child-rearing experiences in South Korea. This study explored how 7 North Korean female defectors with young children developed child-rearing microideologies that acknowledge both North Korean cultural ideology and South Korean cultural ideology. Methods: To examine North Korean female defectors' child-rearing experiences, indepth interviews with 7 North Korean female defectors with young children were conducted. Results: Four theme clusters, 11 themes, and 47 meanings were found from a phenomenological analysis with indepth interview data. Based on the themes, three types of child-rearing microideologies were identified: (1) separation,(2) assimilation, and (3) integration. Each type of child-rearing microideology can be understood with a meaningful phrase "there is no choice", "nevertheless" and "because I came here to be better," respectively. Conclusion/Implications: This study provides knowledge on the individual-specified child-rearing strategy of North Korean female defectors with young children and suggests the necessity of diverse policy proposals based on the child-rearing microideology types.

Experience of Job Stress among Nurses Working in Long-term Care Hospital: A Phenomenological Approach (요양병원 간호사의 간호 스트레스 경험: 현상학적 접근)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the subjective experience of job stress among nurses working in long-term care hospitals. Methods: A phenomenological approach was used for the study. Data were collected from May to June, 2016 using open-ended questions during in-depth interviews. Participants were nurses working in long-term care hospitals and had reported experiences of stress. Six nurses participated in this study. Results: Six themes emerged from the analysis using Colaizzi's method: (a) Heavy workload and responsibility due to nurse shortage, (b) Getting exhausted by caring for cognitively impaired patients, (c) Feeling pressure due to conflict with patients' family, (d) compassion for patients who are getting worse, (e) Low value in being a long-term hospital nurse, and (f) Efforts to overcome stress. Conclusion: Sufficient labor supply, environmental improvements, program for improving interpersonal skills, education and counseling on end-of-life care, and recognition improvement about long term hospital are suggested to reduce the job stress of long-term hospital nurses.

Mindfulness Meditation Experiences among Patients with Coronary Artery Disease: A Phenomenological Study (관상동맥질환자의 마음챙김 명상에 대한 경험: 현상학적 연구)

  • Purpose: This study was aimed to explore and describe the experiences of mindfulness meditation (mindfulness- based stress reduction, MBSR) among patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) as a method of cardiac rehabilitation. Methods: In-depth interviews was conducted with 7 participants with CAD post percutaneous coronary intervention. Main question was 'what is your experiences with MBSR?' Colaizzi's seven steps of phenomenological analysis was used for eliciting embedded meanings. Results: Five theme clusters were found; rediscovery of mindfulness meditation, obtaining self-control for stress management, self-worth, feeling of happiness, and looking into myself. Conclusion: This study provides a profound picture on the experiences of mindfulness meditation among participants with coronary artery disease. MBSR can help patients with CAD in reducing stress and to enhance their cardiac rehabilitations. It is hoped that mindfulness meditation can be used in clinical setting as a part of cardiac rehabilitation program.

The Observational Experience of Labor and Delivery by Student Nurses in the Clinical Setting (간호학생의 분만관찰경험)

  • The purpose of this study was to use phenomenological perspectives to identify the meaning and structure of the observational experience of labor and delivery by student nurses in the clinical setting. The participants were 115 junior and senior students from Christian College of Nursing in Kwang Ju. The students were asked to write about their observational experience in the delivery room. Colaizzi's method was used for phenomenological analysis. The investigator analysed the data to identify and categorize themes and basic structural elements. Twelve themes and eight basic structure were identified. The process of the observational experience in labor and delivery has three proposed phases : anticipatory, observational and post-observational. In the anticipatory phase, nursing students were related only to the event of anticipated labor and delivery of clients. Structure 1, feeling of expectation and fear, was identified. In the observational phase, students were related to the labor and delivery situation, a woman delivered and a newborn. Structure 2, shock and suffering, was identified in relation to the labor and delivery situation. Structure 3, need for caring and satisfaction, was identified in relation to the woman delivered. Structure 4, feeling of mystery and joy, was identified in relation to the newborn. In the post-observational phase, relations between students and the life of a human being, students and self in the future, students and their mothers and students and women and God appeared. And in these relations 〈structure 5, valuable〉, 〈structure 6, feeling of expectation and fear〉, 〈structure 7, love and appreciation〉 and 〈structure 8, greatness〉 were identified.

Parenting Experience of Parents with a Disabled Child (장애자녀를 둔 부모의 양육경험)

  • Purpose: This study used a phenomenological method, which is a qualitative study, in order to understand the vivid experience of parents who have a disabled child. Methods: The number of participants was 10. The subjects of this study were parents who are raising their disabled child who attends a special school or normal middle or high schools in D city. The period for collecting materials was from September 2005 to July 2007. The phenomenological analysis method suggested by Giorgi was used. Results: The meanings of the child parenting experience of parents with a disabled child are (1) feeling of frustration of the delayed treatment, (2) difficult to accept the diagnosis of disability, (3) having eyes centered on her child, (4) accepting the disabled child, (5) giving all his energy to his disabled child, (6) making efforts for his family's unity, (7) recognizing the difficulty of parenting disabled child, (8) recognizing the difficulty of education for disabled child, (9) feeling pitiful for his their normal children, (10) planning for disabled child's future. Conclusions: All the programs for disabled child should be programed for their entire life. It is necessary to provide physical, psychological, emotional, social and economic nursing intervention to relieve or reduce the burden of parents with disabled children.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the essential structure of the lived experience of working mothers' parenting burden in Korea. Methods: Eight working mothers with young children were interviewed. The Colaizzi analysis of phenomenological research was applied. Results: Seven theme clusters were extracted: a life with constant conflict, sense of guilt, feeling anxious because of lack of information about education for their children, social stigma as a deficient mother, family relationship becoming distant, a life being exhausted, day to day struggle. Conclusion: These results provide an opportunity to have a better understanding of the experiences of working mothers related to parenting their young children. It would also serve as a medium for the formulation of appropriate nursing intervention relevant to burdens of parenthood.

A Phenomenological Study on Smoking Experience among Female College Students (여대생의 흡연 경험에 대한 현상학적 연구)

  • Objectives: This study was to understand the essence and the meanings of smoking experience in female undergraduate students. Methods: Colaizzi's phenomenological method was used. Data were collected by in-depth interviews with six undergraduate female students. Field notes, recording under the subjects' agreement, and telephone interview were also used. Results: In the analysis, 131 significant statements, 15 themes, 7 categories emerged. The seven categories were as follows; 'the first smoking for change and adaptation', 'becoming a part of self', 'good friend without any reason', 'a bond with friends', 'gazing with bad eyes', 'unexpected guest without realizing it', 'willingness to smoke more'. Conclusion: The results of this study will help professionals to understand the smoking behavior of female undergraduate students. We should consider positive experience toward smoking in young women for considering to plan smoking cessation program.
