Husserlian Phenomenology in Korean Nursing Research: Analysis, Problems, and Suggestions

  • Purpose: This paper is a critical review of descriptive phenomenological methodology in Korean nursing research. We propose constructive suggestions for the improvement of descriptive phenomenological methodology in light of Husserl's phenomenological approaches. Methods: Using the key words of 'phenomenology,' 'experience,' and 'nursing,' we identify and analyze 64 Korean empirical phenomenological studies (selected from 282 studies) published in 14 Korean nursing journals from 2005 to 2018. The PubMed and the Korea Citation Index were used to identify the studies. Results: Our analysis shows that all the reviewed articles used Giorgi's or Colaizzi's scientific phenomenological methodology, without critical attention to Husserl's philosophical phenomenological principles. Conclusions: The use of scientific phenomenology in nursing research, which originated in North America, has become a global phenomenon, and Korean phenomenological nursing research has faithfully followed this scholarly trend. This paper argues that greater integration of Husserlian phenomenological principles into scientific phenomenological methodology in nursing research, such as participant-centered bracketing and eidetic reduction, is needed to ensure that scientific phenomenology lives up to its promise as a research methodology.

A Phenomenological Study on the Infertility Experience of Women of Childbearing Age in South Korea: Caring for My Marginalized Identity

  • Background: While the application of procedural methods to solve the infertility problem has increased, the decline in the quality of life of women who experience infertility has been disregarded. Methods: This qualitative study used phenomenological analysis of data collected from 13 women with infertility in South Korea to reveal the subjective meaning of physical experiences perceived by women over the course of treatment. Results: Upon analyses of the treatment experiences of women with infertility in South Korea via a phenomenological analysis method, 10 themes were extracted and integrated into four theme clusters ("Perceiving infertility," "The body that gives birth," "A process in an endless tunnel," "Caring for my marginalized identity"). Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that women with infertility in South Korea perceived their own bodies as givers of birth living in traditional and patriarchal societies. A contextual flow proceeded to the final stage of women caring for their marginalized identity, which had suffered throughout the course of their infertility journey.

커뮤니케이션 현상학에 관한 기초 연구 (A Fundamental Study for the Phenomenology of Communication)

  • 커뮤니케이션 현상학은 커뮤니케이션 현상을 현상학적으로 접근해서 설명하는 학문이다. 의식과 경험의 결합, 아날로그와 디지털의 결합, 표현과 지각의 결합, 개인과 생활세계의 결합, 수사와 윤리의 결합 등과 같은 인간 커뮤니케이션 구성 요인은 연구 대상이고, 현상학은 인식론(방법론)인 것이다. 이러한 인간 커뮤니케이션 현상을 현상학적으로 개념 규정하기 위해서는 반드시 현상학적 기술, 현상학적 환원, 현상학적 해석 등을 통한 분석이 요구된다. 이러한 분석을 통해 제시되는 커뮤니케이션 현상학 표준 이론 구성 요소들이 지향, 구두점 찍기, 관행, 합당화 등인데, 지향은 의식 경험의 대상으로서, 구두점 찍기는 상징 형성 과정으로서, 관행은 이상적 말 행위로서, 합당화는 사회적 합당화로서 구분된 커뮤니케이션을 각각 그 내용으로 한다. 이러한 연구 대상 및 방법론 논의를 포괄하는 커뮤니케이션 현상학은 '철학 및 언어학 개념으로 구성된 커뮤니케이션 이론'으로도 볼 수 있고, 커뮤니케이션학에의 질적 방법 적용 연구 접근이자 학제 간 연구의 한 모델로서도 평가된다.

경관분석 및 평가방법에 관한 연구 - 현상학적 접근 - (A Study on the Landscape Analysis and Evaluation Method : A Phenomenological Approach)

  • 경관평가에 있어서 현상학적 접근은 분석적이고 체계적인 기존의 과학적 방법들과 대비되는 새로운 차원의 접근방법을 보여주고 있다. 기존의 과학적 접근이 정량적, 환원주의적, 폐쇄적, 실험적인 특성을 지녔다고 한다면 현상학적 접근은 정성적, 총체적, 개방적, 체험적 특성을 지녔다고 말할 수 있다. 현상학적 접근에서는 개인의 선호도, 느낌을 경관평가의 주요 기준으로 삼고 있으나, 일정 집단의 평균적 반응보다는 개개인의 다양한 반응, 느낌, 의미 등을 더욱 중요시 여긴다. 이렇게 함으로써 현상학적 방법은 기존의 계량적 혹은 과학적 방법이 지닌 단점을 보완할 수 있는 가능성을 보여준다. 즉 계량적 혹은 과학적 방법에서는 평가대상이 되는 현상을 단순화시킴으로 해서 실제 현상그대로 보지를 못하기 쉬운데 비하여, 현상학적 접근에서는 실제 그대로의 현상을 보려고 시도하며 현상의 본질을 캐내려고 노력한다. 현상학적 접근은 총체적이며 정성적인 입장을 가짐으로해서 실용적인 경관평가 기법이 되기에는 한계가 있다고 볼 수 있으나, 이를 극복할 수 있는 효율적인 방법이 모색되어야 하겠다. 최근의 연구에서는 현상학적 개념과 신뢰성, 타당성 등의 과학적 형식기준을 동시에 만족시킬 수 있는 방법이 개발되고 있음을 볼 수 있으며 이는 매우 바람직한 일이라 할 수 있다. 경관평가에서 현상학적 접근의 대두는 기존의 체계적, 계량적 방법의 타당성(content validity)을 재점검할 수 있는 계기를 만들어 주고 있다.

이방인 뉴요커의 본질적 의미에 대한 현상학적 연구 -패션디자이너와 광고디자이너를 중심으로- (Phenomenological Study on the Essential Meaning of Gentile New Yorkers -Focusing on Fashion Designers and Advertising Designers-)

  • This phenomenological study is to understand the meaning and essence of experience from the perspective of a New Yorker. Participants were 11 Korean single women around 30 years old who work as fashion designers or advertising designers living and working in New York. Data were collected from November, 2013 to February, 2014, and one-to-one in-depth interviews were performed for data collection. Data analysis used the descriptive phenomenological method proposed by Giorgi. Phenomenological research is useful to understand the meaning of the experience for select cases and is used as an epoch and free variation method. The study results were identified from 70 common meanings to 14 exposed themes and 4 essentially themes from a gentile New Yorker's experience. The 4 essential themes were as follows. 1) Self-realization at the highest stage, 2) Indulge in the advanced culture of affluence and freedom, 3) Collapsing every day in depressed foreign workers, and 4) Becoming a rootless gentile New Yorker.

4차산업시대에 상담코칭전문가의 인식에 관한 현상학적 연구 (A Phenomenological Study on the Recognition of Counseling & Coaching Experts in the Fourth Industrial Age)

  • The purpose of this study is to help Counseling & Coaching(C&C) service and marketing by understanding C&C professionals' perception about the fourth industrial age. The qualitative research method of phenomenology was utilized in this study. In-depth personal interviews of 5 C&C Specialist with more than 10 years of experience in the C&C service setting were conducted using the records from May, 2018 to July, 2018. Content analysis was done using the Colaizzi' phenomenological method. The results based on the data analysis, 20 descriptive statements and 5 themes were confirmed. The 5 themes were as followed; 'A growing interest', 'Psychological burden of change' 'New hope through convergence', 'Do not move to action', and 'Think about new strategies'. This study helps to recognize counseling coaching professionals who are preparing for the fourth industrial age. The results can be used as a starting point for identifying the knowledge ecosystem and activating the counseling coaching service in the fourth industrial age.

영양교사의 영양교육 직무 장애요인에 대한 현상학적 분석 (Phenomenological Analysis of Barrier Factors Affecting Nutrition Education Jobs of Nutrition Teachers)

  • The purpose of this study was to understand barrier factors affecting nutrition education jobs and determining priorities according to frequency of occurrence of obstacles. Focus group interview (FGI) was conducted on 11 nutrition teachers, and the result are summarized by the phenomenological analysis method. The barriers of nutrition education consisted of three categories, seven themes, and 10 sub-themes. The three categories were divided into work burden, recognition of nutrition education, and limitations of the nutrition education environment. Recognition of nutrition education was further divided into internal recognition from nutrition teachers and individual and external recognition from students and staff. The results showed that the most frequent barrier experienced by nutrition teachers in the work burden category was heavy work loads of foodservice management, followed by irrational working environment. In addition, limitations of the nutrition education environment consisted of absence of standard curriculum and textbooks, inadequate education infrastructure, and inadequate class time. To improve this, it is necessary to reduce nutrition teacher's food service management and develop standard curriculum and educational materials for nutrition education.

Phenomenological Model to Re-proportion the Ambient Cured Geopolymer Compressed Blocks

  • Geopolymer mortar compressed blocks were prepared using fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag, silica fume and metakaolin as binders and sand/quarry dust/pond ash as fine aggregate. Alkaline solution was used to activate the source materials for synthesizing the geopolymer mortar. Fresh mortar was used to obtain the compressed blocks. The strength development with reference to different parameters was studied. The different parameters considered were fineness of fly ash, binder components, type of fine aggregate, molarity of alkaline solution, age of specimen, fluid-to-binder ratio, binder-to-aggregate ratio, degree of saturation, etc. The compressed blocks were tested for compression at different ages. It was observed that some of the blocks attained considerable strength within 24 h under ambient conditions. The cardinal aim was to analyze the experimental data generated to formulate a phenomenological model to arrive at the combinations of the ingredients to produce geopolymer blocks to meet the strength development desired at the specified age. The strength data was analyzed within the framework of generalized Abrams' law. It was interesting to note that the law was applicable to the analysis of strength development of partially saturated compressed blocks when the degree of saturation was maintained constant. The validity of phenomenological model was examined with an independent set of experimental data. The blocks can replace the traditional masonry blocks with many advantages.

Phenomenological Modeling of Newly Discovered Eclipsing Binary 2MASS J18024395 + 4003309 = VSX J180243.9+400331

  • We present a by-product of our long term photometric monitoring of cataclysmic variables. 2MASS J18024395 +4003309 = VSX J180243.9 +400331 was discovered in the field of the intermediate polar V1323 Her observed using the Korean 1-m telescope located at Mt. Lemmon, USA. An analysis of the two-color VR CCD observations of this variable covers all the phase intervals for the first time. The light curves show this object can be classified as an Algol-type variable with tidally distorted components, and an asymmetry of the maxima (the O'Connell effect). The periodogram analysis confirms the cycle numbering of Andronov et al. (2012) and for the initial approximation, the ephemeris is used as follows: Min I. BJD = 2456074.4904+0.3348837E. For phenomenological modeling, we used the trigonometric polynomial approximation of statistically optimal degree, and a recent method "NAV" ("New Algol Variable") using local specific shapes for the eclipse. Methodological aspects and estimates of the physical parameters based on analysis of phenomenological parameters are presented. As results of our phenomenological model, we obtained for the inclination $i=90^{\circ}$, $M_1=0.745M_{\odot}$, $M_2=0.854M_{\odot}$, $M=M_1+M_2=1.599M_{\odot}$, the orbital separation $a=1.65{\cdot}10^9m=2.37R_{\odot}$ and relative radii $r_1=R_1/a=0.314$ and $r_2=R_2/a=0.360$. These estimates may be used as preliminary starting values for further modeling using extended physical models based on the Wilson & Devinney (1971) code and it's extensions

고 3 수험생 어머니의 입시준비 경험에 대한 현상학적 연구 (A Phenomenological Study on the Mothers' Experiences with Children Preparing a College Entrance Examination)

  • The study reported a phenomenological analysis of the interviews with 19 mothers who had a child preparing a college entrance examination. The research question was what mothers experienced in supporting their child in his/her study for the examination. Results indicated that 'the senior year in a highschool' was described as the most stressful period affecting all the family members. Mothers' experiences were portrayed from three perspectives: mothers, as family members, experiencing the attachment to her child but conflicts with her husband; mothers, as individuals, adjusting by trying to setting realistic academic goals for her child while supporting him/her physically, emotionally, and spiritually; and mothers, as critics to extrafamily systems, blaming the inconsistency of educational policies. 1bis study was conducted with a holistic view, and highlighted the importance of interactions between traditional ideology about the mother roles and socioeconomic contexts when interpreting mothers' supporting their child in study for a college entrance examination.
