Agarose hydrogel, a solid electrolyte, was investigated voltammetrically in terms of transport properties and natural convection effects using a ferrocenyl compound as a redox probe. To confirm the diffusion properties of solute on the agarose interface, the diffusion coefficients (D) of ferrocenemethanol in agarose hydrogel were determined by cyclic voltammetry (CV) according to the concentration of agarose hydrogel. While the value of D on the agarose interface is smaller than that in the bulk solution, the square root of the scan rate-dependent peak current reveals that the mass transport behavior of the solute on the agarose surface shows negligible convection or migration effects. In order to confirm the reduced natural convection on the gel interface, scan rate-dependent CV was performed in the solution phase and on the agarose surface, respectively. Slow scan voltammetry at the gel interface can determine a conventional and reproducible diffusion-controlled current down to a scan rate of 0.3 mV/s without any complicated equipment.
Nonlinear free vibration and stability responses of a carbon nanotube reinforced composite beam under temperature rising are investigated in this paper. The material of the beam is considered as a polymeric matrix by reinforced the single-walled carbon nanotubes according to different distributions with temperature-dependent physical properties. With using the Hamilton's principle, the governing nonlinear partial differential equation is derived based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. In the nonlinear kinematic assumption, the Von Kármán nonlinearity is used. The Galerkin's decomposition technique is utilized to discretize the governing nonlinear partial differential equation to nonlinear ordinary differential equation and then is solved by using of multiple time scale method. The critical buckling temperatures, the nonlinear natural frequencies and the nonlinear free response of the system is obtained. The effect of different patterns of reinforcement on the critical buckling temperature, nonlinear natural frequency, nonlinear free response and phase plane trajectory of the carbon nanotube reinforced composite beam investigated with temperature-dependent physical property.

The present study is to determine whether the Red-ginseng extract has a proliferative or cytotoxic effect on the human neuronal stem cells(hNSCs). The hNSCs were grown and incubated with different doses of Red-ginseng extract. We tested the proliferative or cytotoxic effects by MTT and FACS analysis. Cell viability cell cycle analysis, DNA fragmentation, and bax or PARP expressions were evaluated. The hNSCs showed a proliferafe trend with its peak concentration at 0.3 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$. Beyond this point, higher doses decreased viabilities and showed a cytotoxic effect at 10 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$. There was a tendency of increased S and G2/M phases during cell proliferation. In a cytotoxic condition, decreased S phase and increased G0/G1 phases were noted, suggesting cell cycle arrest. The cytotoxic effect was associated with increase DNA fragmentation in a dose-dependent manner, However PARP cleavage or bax expression was not detected. Our results suggest that Red-ginseng extract has dual effects, the cell proliferative or cytotoxic effect, on hNSCs in vitro with dose-dependent manner.

The Diphenyleneiodonium (DPI) is widely used as an inhibitor of flavoenzymes, particularly NADPH oxidase. In this study, we investigated the effect of DPI on the cell growth progression of human colon cancer cells HCT-116 (wild-type p53), HT-29 (p53 mutant) and human breast cancer cells MCF-7 (wild-type p53). DPI treatment in cancer cells evoked a dose- and time-dependent growth inhibition, and also induced the cell cycle arrest in C2/M phase. The peak of cell population arrested in C2/M phase was observed at12 hr after treatment of DPI. In addition, DPI significantly induced the expression of p53, which induces proapoptotic genes in response to DNA damage or irreparable cell cycle arrest, at 6 hr in DPI-stimulated cells. However, a catechol apocynin, which inhibits the assembly of NADPH oxidase, did not induce p53 expression. This suggest that p53 expression induced by DPI is not associated with the inhibition of NADPH oxidase. In conclusion, we suggest that DPI induces the expression of wild-type p53 by ROS-in-dependent mechanism in several cancer cells, and upregulated p53 may be involved in regulatory mechanisms for growth inhibition and cell cycle arrest at C2/M phase in DPI-stimulated cells.

Doxorubicin is an anthracycline-family polyketide compound with a very potent anti-cancer activity, typically produced by Streptomyces peucetius. To understand the potential target biosynthetic genes critical for the doxorubicin everproduction, a doxorubicin-specific DNA microarray chip was fabricated and applied to reveal the growth-phase-dependent expression profiles of biosynthetic genes from two doxorubicin-overproducing strains along with the wild-type strain. Two doxorubicin-overproducing 5. peucetius strains were generated via over-expression of a dnrl (a doxorubicin-specific positive regulatory gene) and a doxA (a gene involved in the conversion from daunorubicin to doxorubicin) using a streptomycetes high expression vector containing a strong ermE promoter. Each doxorubicin-overproducing strain was quantitatively compared with the wild-type doxorubicin producer based on the growth-phase-dependent doxorubicin productivity as well as doxorubicin biosynthetic gene expression profiles. The doxorubicin-specific DNA microarray chip data revealed the early-and-steady expressions of the doxorubicin-specific regulatory gene (dnrl), the doxorubicin resistance genes (drrA, drrB, drrC), and the doxorubicin deoxysugar biosynthetic gene (dnmL) are critical for the doxorubicin overproduction in S. peucetius. These results provide that the relationship between the growth-phase-dependent doxorubicin productivity and the doxorubicin biosynthetic gene expression profiles should lead us a rational design of molecular genetic strain improvement strategy.

Under the condition of nutritional deprivation, actively growing cells prepare to enter $G_0$-like stationary phase. Protein modification by phosphorylation/dephosphorylation or ubiqutination contributes to transfer cells from active cell cycle to dormant stage. We show here that Psp1/Sds23, which functions in association with the 20S cyclosome/APC (1) and is essential for cell cycle progression in Schizosaccharomyces pombe (2), is phosphorylated by stress-activated MAP kinase Sty1 and protein kinase A, as well as Cdc2/cyclinB, upon entry into stationary phase. Three serines at the positions 18,333 and 391 are phosphorylated and overexpression of Psp1 mutated on these sites causes cell death in stationary phase. These modifications are required for the binding of Spufd2, a S.pombe homolog of multiubiquitin chain assembly factor E4 in ubiquitin fusion degradation pathway. Deletion of Spufd2 gene led to increase cell viability in stationary phase, indicating that S. pombe Ufd2 functions to inhibit cell growth at this stage to maintain cell viability. Moreover, Psp1 enhances the multiubiquitination function of Ufd2, suggesting that Psp1 phosphorylated by sty1 and PKA kinases is associated with the Ufd2-dependent protein degradation pathway, which is linked to stress tolerance, to maintain cell viability in the $G_0$-like stationary phase.
Linear polyethers were prepared by the reaction of diphenoxide anions from 2,2-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) propane, bis (4-hydroxylphenyl) sulfide, and bis (khydroxyphenyl) sulfone with 1,6-dibromohexane in aqueous/nitrobenzene heterogeneous phases. Tetrabutylammonium bromide was employed as a phase transfer catalyst. The polymerizations were dependent both on stirring speed and catalyst level, but only up to certain maximum values. Distribution studies demonstrated transference of diphenoxide anions from aqueous phase into nitrobenzene in the presence of the catalyst. Some of polymers were characterized with respect to their intrinsic viscosities (0.09-O.16), number average molecular weight (2400-4800)) and thermal properties. The use of a new terminology, 'phase transfer polymerization?, is proposed to differentiate this type of polymerizations from interfacial polycondensations.

This paper reviews the studies on the pressure drop and the heat transfer in microchannels. Although a lot of studies about the single-phase flow have been done until now, conflicting results are occasionally reported about flow transition from laminar flow to turbulent flow, friction factor, and Nusselt number. Some studies reported the early flow transition due to relatively greater wall effect like surface roughness, but the other studies showed that the flow transition occurred at the Reynolds number of about 2300 and the early flow transition might be due to less accurate measurement of the channel geometry. Also, there have been arguments whether the conventional relation based upon continuum theory can be applied to the fluid flow and the heat transfer in microchannels without modification or not. The studies about the two-phase flow in microchannels have been mostly about investigating the flow pattern and the pressure drop in rectangular channels using two-component, two-phase flow like air/water mixture. Some studies proposed correlations to predict two-phase flow pressure drop in microchannels. They were mostly based on Lockhart-Martinelli model with modification on C-coefficient, which was dependent on channel geometry, Reynolds number, surface tension, and so on. Others investigated the characteristics of flow boiling heat transfer in microchannels with respect to test parameters such as mass flux, heat flux, system pressure, and so on. The existing studies have not been fully satisfactory in providing consistent results about the pressure drop and the heat transfer in microchannels. Therefore, more in-depth studies should be done for understanding the fundamentals of the transport phenomena in the microchannels and giving the basic guidelines to design the micro devices.
We used in-situ synchrotron X-ray scattering to investigate phase transformations of octahedral tilted monoclinic $SrRuO_3$ (MSRO) and tetragonal SRO (TSRO) thin films on $SrTiO_3$ (STO) substrates. The octahedral tilted MSRO thin films were highly crystalline and the monoclinic distortion angle was $0.45^{\circ}$. The phase transition temperature from the MSRO to TSRO phase occurred at approximately $200^{\circ}C$ as a second order transition. Conversely, no phase transformations of the TSRO thin film occurred within the range from RT to $250^{\circ}C$. The octahedral $RuO_6$ rotation was strongly affected by the phase transformation in the SRO thin films.
This study has evaluated the dissimialr weldability of Incoloy 825 Ni base alloy with a mild steel(SS41). Further a compatibility study of wrveral Ni base filler metals with the dissimilar joint between the two alloys was also included. The dissimilar weldability of Incoloy 825 with mild steel is strongly dependent upon the type of the filler metal used. Among the filler metals, ENiCrFe which has a chemical comosition similar to that of Incoloy 825 was found to be most compatible to the joint. In addition, a filler metal which showed a good cracing resistance in one dissimiar alloy combination was not necessarily graranteed to other combination. Microstructural examination with SEM, TEM and Auger revealed that the solidification cracking resestance of the dissimilar joint. between Incoloy 835 and SS41 was closely with the Ti+Nb content and with the content of a low melting eutectic phase of Laves relatibve to that of MC type phase.
