  • The characteristics of flow around a rotating propeller were investigated using PIV technique. For each of four different blade phases of $0^{\circ},\;18^{\circ},\;36^{\circ}\;and\;54^{\circ}$four hundred instantaneous velocity fields were ensemble averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the flow around a propeller. The phase-averaged mean velocity fields show that the viscous wake formed by the boundary layers developed on the blade surfaces and the slipstream contraction in the near-wake region. The out-of-plane velocity component and strain rate had large values at the locations of the tip and trailing vortices. The boundary layer developed along the ship hull bottom surface of the ship stern provides a strong turbulent shear layer, affecting the vortex structure in the propeller near-wake. As the flow develops in the downstream direction, the trailing vortices formed behind the propeller hub move upward slightly due to the presence of the hull wake and free surface. The turbulence intensity has large values around the tip and trailing vortices. As the wake moves downstream, the strength of the vorticity diminishes and the turbulence intensity increases due to turbulent diffusion and active mixing between the tip vortices and adjacent wake flow.

  • This paper proposes a readout integrated circuit (ROIC) for $32{\times}32$ infrared focal plane array (IRFPA) detector, which consist of reference resistor, detector resistor, reset switch, integrated capacitor and operational amplifier. Proposed ROIC is designed using $0.35{\;}{\mu}m$ 2P-4M (double poly four metal) n-well CMOS process parameters. Low noise folded cascode operational amplifier which is a key element in the ROIC showed 12.8 MHz unity-gain bandwidth and open-gain 89 dB, phase margin $67^{\circ}$, SNR 82 dB. From proposed circuit, we gained output voltage variation ${\Delta}17{\};mV/^{\circ}C$ when the detector resistor varied according to the temperature.

  • Abstract- In this paper, a new Partial Discharge (PD) detection using Pockels cell was proposed and considerable apparent chaotic characteristics were discussed. For this purpose, PD was generated from needle-plane electrode in air and detecte by optical measuring system using Pockels cell, based on Mach-Zehner interferometer, consisting of He-Ne laser, single mode optical fiber, 50/50 beam splitter and photo detector. In addition, the presence of chaos of the PD signals has been investigated by examining their means of qualitative and quantitative information. For the former, return map and 3-dimensional strange attractor have been drawn in order to investigate the presence of chaotic characteristics relevant to PD signals, detected through CT and Peckels sensor respectively, in the normalized time series. The presence of strange attractor indicates the existence of fractal structures in it's phase space. For the latter, several dimension values of strange attractor were verified sequentially. Throughout this paper, it is likely that the chaotic characteristics regarding the PD signals under air are verified.

  • Although Fuzzy Logic Controller(FLC) adopted three terms as input gives better performance, FLC is in general composed of two-term control because of the difficulty in the construction of fuzzy rule base. In this paper, a three-term FLC which is similar to PID control but acts as a nonlinear controller is proposed. To reduce the complexity of the rule base design and to increase efficiency. a simplified fuzzy PID control is induced from a hybrid velocity/position type PID algorithm by sharing a common rule base for both fuzzy PI and fuzzy PD parts. It is simple in structure, easy in implementation, and fast in calculation. The phase plane technique is applied to obtain the rule base for fuzzy two-term control and the resultant rule base is Macvicar-Whelan type. And the membership function is a Gaussian function. The frequency response information is used in tuning of the membership functions. Also a tuning strategy for the scaling factors is proposed based on the relationship between PID gain and the scaling factors. Simulation results show better performance and the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • In the MPEG-4 standardization phase, many methods for coding the irregular shaped VOP (video object Plane) have been researched. Texture coding is one of interesting research items in the MPEG-4. There are the Low pass extrapolation (LPE) padding, the shape adaptive DCT (SA-DCT), and the Extension-Interpolation (EI)/2D-DCT proposed in [1] as texture coding methods. the EI/2D-DCT is the method extending and interpolating luminance values from and Arbitrarily Shaped (AS) image segment into an 8 x 8 block and transforming the extended and interpolated luminance values by the 8x8 DCT. although the EI/2D-DCT and the SA-DCT work well in coding the As image segments. they are degraded since they use one-dimensional (1-D) methods such as the 1D-EI and the 1D-DCT in the two-dimensional (2-D) space. in this paper, we analyze the performance of the EI/2D-DCTand propose a new non-symmetric sig-sag scanning method, which non-symmetrically scans the quantized coefficients in the DCT domain to improve the EI/2D-DCT.

  • Solid insulation exposed to voltage is degraded by electrical tree process. And the degradation of the insulation is accelerated by voltage application. For this experimental, specimen of electrical tree model is made by XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene). And the size of the specimen is $7*5*7\;mm^3$. Distance of needle and plane is 2 mm. Voltages applied for acceleration test are 12 kV to 15 kV. And distribution characteristic of degraded stage is studied too. As a PD detecting and data process, discharge data acquire from PD detecting system (Biddle instrument). The system presents statistical distribution as phase resolved. Moreover the processing time of electrical tree is recorded to know the speed of degradation according to voltage.

  • A microgyroscope, which vibrates in two orthogonal axes on the substrate plane, is designed and fabricated. The shuttle mass of the vibrating gyroscope consists of two parts. The one is outer shuttle mass which vibrates in driving mode guided by four folded springs attached to anchors. And the other is inner shuttle mass which vibrates in driving mode as the outer frame does and also can vibrate in sensing mode guided by four folded springs attached to the outer shuttle mass. Due to the directions of vibrating mode, it is possible to fabricate the gyroscope with simplified process by using polysilicon on insulator structure. Fabrication processes of the microgyroscope are composed of anisotropic silicon etching by RIE, gas-phase etching (GPE) of the buried sacrificial oxide layer, metal electrode formation. An eletromechanical model of the vibrating microgyroscope was modeled and bandwidth characteristics of the gyroscope operates at DC 4V and AC 0.1V in a vacuum chamber of 100mtorr. The detection circuit consists of a discrete sense amplifier and a noise canceling circuit. Using the evaluated electromechanical model, an operating condition for high performance of the gyroscope is obtained.

  • Analysis: of the propulsion performance considering ship motion in waves is an important factor for the efficient operation of a ship. The interaction between the propeller and the free surface due to the ship motion in waves has a significant influence on the propulsion performance. However, most recent studies regarding the hydrodynamic performance of ships in waves focus on the added resistance, and experimental and numerical data on the propulsion performance considering the ship motion in waves are very rare. In this study, a numerical investigation of the nominal wake in regular head waves is performed for a KVLCC2 model ship for the fully-loaded condition. Phase-averaged wake fields for one period are compared with experimental data measured using Stereo PIV, showing good agreement. The effect of the ship motion on the characteristics of the wake field and the axial velocity in the propeller plane are investigated while varying the wave length.

  • Cr-Si-Al-N coating with different Si content were deposited by hybrid physical vapor deposition (PVD) method consisting of unbalanced magnetron (UBM) sputtering and arc ion plating (AIP). The deposition temperature was $300^{\circ}C$, and the gas ratio of $Ar/N_2$ were 9:1. The CrSi alloy and aluminum targets used for arc ion plating and sputtering process, respectively. Si content of the CrSi alloy targets were varied with 1 at%, 5 at%, and 10 at%. The phase analysis, composition and microstructural analysis performed using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) including energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), respectively. All of the coatings grown with textured CrN phase (200) plane. The thickness of the Cr-Si-Al-N films were measured about $2{\mu}m$. The friction coefficient and removal rate of films were measured by a ball-on-disk test under 20N load. The friction coefficient of all samples were 0.6 ~ 0.8. Among all of the samples, the removal rate of CrSiAlN (10 at% Si) film shows the lowest values, $4.827{\times}10^{-12}mm^3/Nm$. As increasing of Si contents of the CrSiAlN coatings, the hardness and elastic modulus of CrSiAlN coatings were increased. The morphology and composition of wear track of the films was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy, respectively. The surface energy of the films were obtained by measuring of contact angle of water drop. Among all of the samples, the CrSiAlN (10 at% Si) films shows the highest value of the surface energy, 41 N/m.

  • In designing the coastal structures, the accurate estimation of wave forces on them is very important. Recently, the empirical formulae such as Goda formula are widely used to estimate wave forces, as well as 2-D hydraulic and numerical model tests. But, sometimes, these estimation methods mentioned above seem to be unreasonable to predict 3-D structure of wave pressure on the coastal structures with 3-D plane arrangement in the real coastal area. Especially, in case of consideration of phase difference at harbor and seaward sides of the large-sized coastal structures like a composite breakwater, it is easily expected that the real wave pressures on each section of coastal structure have 3-D distribution. A new numerical model of 3-D Large Eddy Simulation, which is applicable to permeable structure, is developed to clarify the 3-D structure of wave pressures acting on coastal structure. The calculated wave forces on 3-D structure installed on the submerged breakwater show in good agreement with the measured values. In this study, the composite breakwater is adopted as a representative structure among the large-sized coastal structures and the 3-D structure of wave pressures on it is discussed in relation to the phase difference at harbor and seaward sides of it due to wave diffraction and transmitted wave through rubble mound.
