  • MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are known to negatively control protein-coding genes by binding to messenger RNA (mRNA) in the cytoplasm. In innate immunity, the role of miRNA gene silencing is largely unknown. In this study, we performed microarray-based experiments using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophages derived from wild-type, MyD88 knockout (KO), TRIF KO, and MyD88/TRIF double KO mice. We employed a statistical approach to determine the importance of the commonality and specificity of miRNA binding sites among groups of temporally co-regulated genes. We demonstrate that both commonality and specificity are irrelevant to define a priori groups of co-down regulated genes. In addition, analyzing the various experimental conditions, we suggest that miRNA regulation may not only be a late-phase process (after transcription) but can also occur even early (1h) after stimulation in knockout conditions. This further indicates the existence of dynamic interactions between miRNA and signaling molecules/transcription factor regulation; this is another proof for the need of shifting from a 'hard-wired' paradigm of gene regulation to a dynamical one in which the gene co-regulation is established on a case-by-case basis.

  • We propose an experimental holographic imaging scheme combining compressive sensing (CS) theory with digital holography in phase-shifting conditions. We use the Mach-Zehnder interferometer for hologram formation, and apply the compressive sensing (CS) approach to the holography acquisition process. Through projecting the hologram pattern into a digital micro-mirror device (DMD), finally we will acquire the compressive sensing measurements using a photodiode. After receiving the data of two holograms via conventional communication channel, we reconstruct the original object using certain signal recovery algorithms of CS theory and hologram reconstruction techniques, which demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed method.

  • Circular Bragg gratings(CBGs) canbe incorporated in most of the semiconductor laser devices because of the frequency-selective property applicable as an optical narrowband-pass filter in DWDM optical communications. In this paper, the optical filtering characteristics of CBGs are evaluated by a novel and simple analytic modal transmission-line theory(MTLT), which is based on Floquet-Babinet's principle. The numerical results reveal that this method offers a simple and convenient algorithm to analyze the filtering characteristics of CBGs as well as is extended conveniently to evaluate the guiding problems of circular multi-layered periodic structures.

  • CTAB(cetyltrimethylammonium bromide)-capped CdSe nanoparticles were prepared by using a 4 : 1(v/v) distilled water-isopropyl alcohol mixture. The cadmium chloride and sodium selenosulfate were used as the cadmium and selenium source. By the analysis of XRD and XPS, the resultant particle was confirmed to be cubic CdSe phase. TEM image showed CdSe nanoparticles with empty core. The CTAB-capped sample showed an maximum absorption at 418nm, blue-shifting compared with bulk CdSe, which indicated stronger quantum confinement effect compared with uncapped sample. From FT-IR analysis, it was found that the presence of the new peaks in the $850{\sim}1250cm^{-1}$ range indicated the existence of chemical bonding between CTAB and surface of CdSe nanoparticles. Also TG analysis indicated that there were two weight-loss steps for the CTAB-capped CdSe nanoparticles. It was suggested that CTAB played a significant role in protecting CdSe nanoparticles.

  • The performance of optimistic concurrency control schemes which are generally used for Mobile computing is very sensitive to the transaction abort rate. Even if the abort probability can be reduced by back-shifting the timestamp from the time of requesting a commit, some transactions continuously perform unnecessary operations after the transactions accessed write-write conflicting data. In this paper, we propose an optimistic protocol that can abort the transactions during the execution phase by using the write notification approach. The proposed protocol enhances the performance of the optimistic concurrency control by reducing the unnecessary operations. In addition, we present a simulation study that compares our schemes with the timestamp based certification scheme. This study shows that our scheme outperforms the timestamp based certification scheme.

  • The paradigm of chronic liver diseases has been shifting. Although hepatitis B and C viral infections are still the main causes of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the introduction of effective antiviral drugs may control or cure them in the near future. In contrast, the burden of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been increasing for decades, and 25 to 30% of the general population in Korea is estimated to have NAFLD. Over 10% of NAFLD patients may have nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a severe form of NAFLD. NASH can progress to cirrhosis and HCC. NASH is currently the second leading cause to be placed on the liver transplantation list in the United States. NAFLD is associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome. The pathophysiology is complex and associated with lipotoxicity, inflammatory cytokines, apoptosis, and insulin resistance. The only proven effective treatment is weight reduction by diet and exercise. However, this may not be effective for advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis. Therefore, effective drugs are urgently needed for treating these conditions. Unfortunately, no drugs have been approved for the treatment of NASH. Many pharmaceutical companies are trying to develop new drugs for the treatment of NASH. Some of them are in phase 2 or 3 clinical trials. Here, pharmacologic therapies in clinical trials, as well as the basic principles of drug therapy, will be reviewed, focusing on pathophysiology.

  • Receiver and transmitter monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) multifunction chips (MFCs) for active phased-array antennas for Ka-band satellite communication (SATCOM) terminals have been designed and fabricated using a 0.15-㎛ GaAs pseudomorphic high-electron mobility transistor (pHEMT) process. The MFCs consist of four-channel radio frequency (RF) paths and a 4:1 combiner. Each channel provides several functions such as signal amplification, 6-bit phase shifting, and 5-bit attenuation with a 44-bit serial-to-parallel converter (SPC). RF pads are implemented on the bottom side of the chip to remove the parasitic inductance induced by wire bonding. The area of the fabricated chips is 5.2 mm × 4.2 mm. The receiver chip exhibits a gain of 18 dB and a noise figure of 2.0 dB over a frequency range from 17 GHz to 21 GHz with a low direct current (DC) power of 0.36 W. The transmitter chip provides a gain of 20 dB and a 1-dB gain compression point (P1dB) of 18.4 dBm over a frequency range from 28 GHz to 31 GHz with a low DC power of 0.85 W. The P1dB can be increased to 20.6 dBm at a higher bias of +4.5 V.

  • This study proposes a novel, conditionally applied neural network technique to reduce the overall peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system while maintaining an acceptable bit error rate (BER) level. The main purpose of the proposed scheme is to adjust only those subcarriers whose peaks exceed a given threshold. In this respect, the developed C-ANN algorithm suppresses only the peaks of the targeted subcarriers by slightly shifting the locations of their corresponding frequency samples without affecting their phase orientations. In turn, this achieves a reasonable system performance by sustaining a tolerable BER. For practical reasons and to cover a wide range of application scenarios, the threshold for the subcarrier peaks was chosen to be proportional to the saturation level of the nonlinear power amplifier used to pass the generated OFDM blocks. Consequently, the optimal values of the factor controlling the peak threshold were obtained that satisfy both reasonable PAPR reduction and acceptable BER levels. Furthermore, the proposed system does not require a recovery process at the receiver, thus making the computational process less complex. The simulation results show that the proposed system model performed satisfactorily, attaining both low PAPR and BER for specific application settings using comparatively fewer computations.

  • An MMIC multi-function chip with a low DC power consumption for an X-band active phased array radar system has been designed and fabricated using a 0.5 ${\mu}m$ GaAs p-HEMT commercial process. The multi-function chip provides several functions: 6-bit phase shifting, 6-bit attenuation, transmit/receive switching, and signal amplification. The fabricated multi-function chip with a compact size of $16mm^2(4mm{\times}4mm)$ exhibits a gain of 10 dB and a P1dB of 14 dBm from 7 GHz to 11 GHz with a DC low power consumption of only 0.6 W. The RMS(Root Mean Square) errors for the 64 states of the 6-bit phase shift and attenuation were measured to $3^{\circ}$ and 0.6 dB, respectively over the frequency.

  • Electronic packages consist of various materials, and as temperature changes, warpage occurs because of the difference in coefficient of thermal expansion. Shadow $moir{\acute{e}}$ is non-contact, whole field measurement technique for out-of-plane displacement. However, the technique has low sensitivity above $50{\mu}m/fringe$, it is not adequate for the warpage measurement in some circumstance. In this paper, by applying phase shifting process to the traditional shadow $moir{\acute{e}}$, measurement system having enhanced sensitivity of $12.5{\mu}m/fringe$ is constructed. Considering Talbot effect, the measurement is carried out in the half Talbot area. Shadow fringe pattern having four times enhanced sensitivity is obtained by the image process with four shadow fringes. The measurement technique is applied to the fibered package substrate and coreless package substrate for measuring warpages at room temperature and at about $100^{\circ}C$.
