  • Red mud is generated as a by-product during the production of aluminum hydroxide from bauxite ore. In this study the red mud coagulants were prepared by reacting 100 ml of 5 M $H_2SO_4$ solution with 10g of red mud at $85^{\circ}C$ or by reacting 100ml of 9M HCl solution with 10g of red mud at $25^{\circ}C$. The prepared red mud coagulants were tested for their coagulation performance of pollutants in the municipal and industrial wastewater. In addition, the coagulation performance was compared with that of a commercially available coagulant ($FeCl_3$). As a result, the red mud coagulants were found to have a good removal efficiency of pollutants in the municipal wastewater (turbidity, phosphate phosphorus) and in the plating wastewater (turbidity, $Pb^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, $Cr^{3+}$). In the experiment to remove COD in the petrochemical wastewater, the COD removal efficiency by the red mud coagulants was a little poor, but it was better than that by $FeCl_3$.

  • In the Hapcheon area, hypersthene-bearing monzonite (mangerite) and syenite are recognized. The main minerals of syenite are alkali feldspar, plagioclase, amphibole, biotite, and quartz. Anhedral hornblende and biotite are interstitial between feldspar and quartz, indicating that the hydrous minerals were crystallized later on. Based on petrochemical studies of major elements, syenite is alkaline series, metaluminous, and I-type. The variation patterns in the trace and rare earth elements of mangerite and syenite show the features of subduction-related igneous rock such as depletion of HFSE, relative enrichment in LILE to LREE, and negative Nb-P-Ti anomalies. Based on the experimental data and petrographic characteristics of the syenite, Hapcheon syenitic magma is considered to be formed by partial melting in a dry system. SHRIMP U-Pb zircon data yield the Triassic age as $227.4{\pm}1.4Ma$ in mangerite, $215.3{\pm}1.2Ma$ in syenite, and $217.9{\pm}2.6Ma$ in coarse-grained syenite, respectively. The mangerite age is similar to those of post-collisional plutonic rocks in Hongseong (226~233 Ma), Yangpyeong (227~231 Ma), and Odaesan (231~234 Ma) areas in the Gyeonggi Massif. Syenites were intruded after about 10 Ma. The features seen in the mangereite and syenite rocks can be explained by models such as the continental collision and slab break-off and the lithosphere thinning and asthenosphere upwelling model.

  • The volcanic lavas in the Janggi area are plotted on basalt, basaltic andesite and andesite field (SiO$_2$; 48-61 wt.%) in the TAS diagram and belong to subalkaline series. Nineteen chenmical analyses of lavas show two distinct differentiation trends; tholeiitic and calc-alkaline. Calc-alkaline basaltic andesites composed of plagioclase and two-pyroxenes (cpx, opx) in their phenocrysts. Tholeiitics basaltic lavas can be classified into two sub-types. The one is porphyritic basalts composed of plagioclase, clinopyroxene and olivine phenocryst, and the other is aphyric basalt and more evolved lavas (aphyric basaltic andesite) with the same mineral phases. Incompatible elements and REE patterns show the enrichment of LILE and depletion of HFSE. This characteristics indicate that these lavas are evolved from the magmas related to subduction. Howeverm calc-alkaline basaltic andesite lavas show that slightly higher enrichment of LILE and the depletion of HFSE than those of tholeiitic basaltic lavas. On the tectonic discriminant diagram such as Ba/Th and La/Th ratios, calc-alkaline basaltic andesite lavas belong to orogenic medium to high-K suites, whereas tholeiitic basaltic lavas belong to medium-K suites and MORB. On the other diagram, such as La/Yb vs. Th/Yb, the volcanic lavas in the study area plotted in the field of oceanic arc basalt. Tholeiitic basaltic lavas are located in more prinitive environment than calc-alkaline andesitic lavas.

  • In environmental friendly aspects, the synthesis of glycerol carbonate from glycerol using carbon monoxide and oxygen gases which were produced in petrochemical plants was studied. The oxidative carbonylation of glycerol under batch reaction system was performed on parameter conditions such as effect of various metals (Cu, Pd, Fe, Sn, Zn, Cr), oxidizing agents, mole ratio of carbon monoxide to oxygen, catalyst amount, solvent types, reaction temperature and time and dehydrating agents. In particular copper chloride catalysts showed the excellent activities, and the glycerol carbonate yields over CuCl and $CuCl_2$ catalysts were the maximum of 44% and 64%, respectively at the following reaction conditions: solvent as nitrobenzene, mole ratio of 1:3:0.15 (glycerol:carbon monoxide:catalyst), mole ratio of 2:1 (carbon monoxide:oxygen), the total pressure of 30 bar at 413 K for 4 hr. It was found that reactivity were significantly different depending on the oxidation number of Cu catalysts, and oxygen plays an important role as oxidizing agents in producing H2O during oxidation reaction after carbonylation of glycerol.

  • Poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (PVP) and its copolymers, poly(4-vinyl pvridine- co-acrylamide) and poly(4-vinyl pyridine-co-allylamine), were synthesized and evaluated for application to organic solder-ability preservatives (OSP). The copolymers were synthesized by radical polymerization of vinyl pyridine in the presence of acrylamide or allylamine as a comonomer. Various kinds of polymers with different chemical composition were synthesized by varying the feed ratio of monomers and their low $M_w$ polymers can be obtained by adding 2-mercaptoethanol as a chain transfer agent during poly-merization. All the polymers showed good adhesion properties on Cu pad when they were spin-coated. Especially, allylamine -containing copolymers showed both good adhesion and solubility properties. Also, they exhibited better thermal stability than PVP homopolymer and such thermal properties were changed depending on the chemical composition and their $M_w$, which were evidenced by the measurement of oxygen induced temperature (OIT). From the OIT measurement, poly(4-vinyl pyridine- co-allylamine) was thermally stable up to $230^{\circ}C$ for 70 min in the 100% oxygen environment. As a result, allylamine-containing copolymers can be considered as a promising OSP coating material that has excellent thermal and adhesive properties applicable to the present microelectronic package processes.

  • To enhance salidroside productivity from a cell suspension cultures of Rhodiola sachalinensis, various combinations of auxin (NAA) and cytokinins (BA, Kinetin) concentration and addition of $GA_3$, TDZ, zeatin, spermine and spermidine at a hormone combination to be established were examined. NAA/BA combination is superior to NAA/kinetin combination in biomass and salidroside content. Maximum salidroside production ($64.6{\pm}8.9\;mg/L$ medium) was obtained from $2B_5$ medium with 1 mg/L NAA and 5 mg/L BA. The adding of $GA_3$ ($0.01\;mg/L{\sim}5\;mg/L$) was beneficial for salidroside accumulation and the highest productivity of salidroside, $90.3{\pm}8.34\;mg/L$, was obtained from $2B_5$ medium supplemented with 1 mg/L NAA, 5 mg/L BA and 0.1 mg/L $GA_3$. On TDZ, zeatin, spermine and spermidine, expectant results were not obtained except a little affirmative effect of spermidine ($69{\pm}2.88$ at 1 mg/L).

  • Concentrations of fine particulate matter ($PM_{2.5}$) and several of its particle constituents measured outside homes in Houston, Texas, and Los Angeles, California, were characterized using multiple regression analysis with proximity to point and mobile sources and meteorological factors as the independent variables. $PM_{2.5}$ mass and the concentrations of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), benzo-[a]-pyrene (BaP), perylene (Per), benzo-[g,h,i]-perylene (BghiP), and coronene (Cor) were examined. Negative associations of wind speed with concentrations demonstrated the effect of dilution by high wind speed. Atmospheric stability increase was associated with concentration increase. Petrochemical source proximity was included in the EC model in Houston. Area source proximity was not selected for any of the $PM_{2.5}$ constituents' regression models. When the median values of the meteorological factors were used and the proximity to sources varied, the air concentrations calculated using the models for the eleven $PM_{2.5}$ constituents outside the homes closest to influential highways were 1.5-15.8 fold higher than those outside homes furthest from the highway emission sources. When the median distance to the sources was used in the models, the concentrations of the $PM_{2.5}$ constituents varied 2 to 82 fold, as the meteorological conditions varied over the observed range. We found different relationships between the two urban areas, illustrating the unique nature of urban sources and suggesting that localized sources need to be evaluated carefully to understand their potential contributions to $PM_{2.5}$ mass and its particle constituents concentrations near residences, which influence baseline indoor air concentrations and personal exposures. The results of this study could assist in the appropriate design of monitoring networks for community-level sampling and help improve the accuracy of exposure models linking emission sources with estimated pollutant concentrations at the residential level.

  • To develop a Root Cause Analysis Map which determines the cause of the accident in chemical laboratory, The Root Cause Analysis(RCA) Map for the laboratory areas was sketched from Phase 1 of the accident element to Phase 3 of the accident element, based on the RCA Map which is applied in the petrochemical industry. On the basis of laboratory RCA Map which was classified by using such method. The root causes of the 211 accident cases in laboratories were classified from Phase 4 to Phase 5 by the Cause Factor Charting technique and The cause of the accident data were inputted to EXCEL program. After that, The causes of the accident data were sorted and classified by type and each step. So 'Approximate Primary RCA Map Draft' was written. In addition, it was reaffirmed whether the root causes of 211 accidents of laboratory were appropriate to 'Primary RCA Map Draft'. By complementing the cause which was expected to cause future accidents, the RCA Map for chemical laboratories was developed. Based on 'RCA Map' proposed in this study, the causes of accidents were analysed management systems 35%, monitoring 12.2%, Human Factor Eng. 15.1% and education training 12.1% by the size of the frequency from Phase 1 to Phase 5.

  • This study presents the preparation of double emulsions in a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)-based microfluidic device. To improve the wettability of hydrophilic continuous phase onto a hydrophobic PDMS microchannel, the surface was modified with 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate (TPM) and then sequentially reacted with acrylic acid monomer solution, which produced selective covalent bonding between acrylic acids and methacrylate groups. For the proof of selective surface modification, tolonium chloride solution was used to identify the modified region and we confirmed that the approach was successfully performed. When water containing 0.5% w/w sodium dodecyl sulfate and 1% w/w Span80 with hexadecane were loaded into the selectively modified microfluidic channels, we can produce stable double emulsion. Based on the spreading coefficients, we predict the morphology of double emulsions. Our proposed method efficiently produces monodisperse double emulsions having 48.5 ${\mu}m$(CV:1.6%) core and 65.1 ${\mu}m$ (CV:1.6%) shell. Furthermore, the multiple emulsions having different numbers of core were easily prepared by simple control of flow rates.

  • The granites in the Jeomchon area can be divided into hornblende biotite granite (Hbgr), deformed biotite granite (Dbgr), deformed pinkish biotite granite(Dpbgr), biotite granite (Btgr), and granite porphyry(Gp). These granites show metaluminous, 1-type and calc-alkaine characteristics from their whole-rock chemistry. Hbgr and Dbgr belong to ilmenite-series granitoids, but Gp to magnetite-series. Dpbgr and Btgr show the intermediate nature between ilmenite- and magnetite-series. Tectonic discriminations indicate that Hbgr and Dbgr were formed in active continental margin environment, whereas Dpbgr, Btgr, and Gp in post-orogenic and/or anorogenic rift-related environment. From the Harker diagrams major oxide contents of Hbgr and Dbgr show a continuous variation with $SiO_2$, indicating that they are genetically correlated with each other. On the other hand, any correlation of major oxides variation cannot be recognized among Dpbgr, Btgr and Gp. It seems like that Hbgr and Dbgr were derived from a same parent granitic magma, judging from their occurrence of outcrop, mineral composition as well as whole-rock chemistry. Variation trends of major oxide contents between Hbgr and Baegnok granodiorite are very similar and continuous. If the two granites were derived from a cogenetic magma, there exists a possibility that the granitic bodies had been separated by Btgr and Gp of Cretaceous age. Three stages of the granitic intrusions are understood in the Jeomchon area. After the intrusion of Hbgr and Dbgr during middle to late Paleozoic time, Dpbgr emplaced into the area next, and finally Btgr and Gp intruded during Cretaceous time. Tectonic movement accompanying shear and/or thrust deformation seems likely to have occurred bewteen the intrusions of Dpbgr and Btgr.
