  • Bluff bodies under the external periodic force vibrate at their own natural or forced frequency. Rectangular bodies or similar structures such as high-rise towers and apartments, and recently a well-cited application - offshore floating bodies, usually needs to reduce these vibrations for stability and the mode control. Therefore, this study is aiming to reduce or control the vibration of a structure by a passive control method, i.e., TLCD (Tuned Liquid Column Damper). Controlling a moving body with a TLCD based on a variety of the orifice shape has been preliminary studied. In order to get a proper control, an optimized study is made on the design of the orifice shape, which has internal plates with the holes. The results show the force acting on the body due to the periodic movement highly depends on the number of holes on the plate and the height of the water level. Therefore, the optimum shape of the orifice and the height of the water level should be confirmed by a series of experiments.

  • In this paper we consider the element-wise (Hadamard) product (or sum) of elliptic divisibility sequences and study the periodic structure of these sequences. We obtain that the element-wise product (or sum) of elliptic divisibility sequences are periodic modulo a prime p like linear recurrence sequences. Then we study periodicity properties of product sequences. We generalize our results to the case of modulo $p^l$ for some prime p > 3 and positive integer l. Finally we consider the p-adic behavior of product sequences and give a generalization of [9, Theorem 4].

  • This paper describes the formulation and application of a dynamic model for a conventional rail track subjected to arbitary loading functions that simulate wheel/rail impact forces. The rail track is idealized as a periodic elastically coupled beam system resting on a Winkler foundation. Modal parameters of the track structure are first obtained from the natural vibration characteristics of the beam system, which is discretized into a periodic assembly of a specially-constructed track element and a single beam element characterized by their exact dynamic stiffness matrices. An equivalent frequency-dependent spring coefficient representing the resilient, flexural and inertial characteristics of the rail support components is introduced to reduce the degrees of freedom of the track element. The forced vibration equations of motion of the track subjected to a series of loading functions are then formulated by using beam bending theories and are reduced to second order ordinary differential equations through the use of mode summation with non-proportional modal damping. Numerical examples for the dynamic responses of a typical track are presented, and the solutions resulting from different rail/tie beam theories are compared.

  • A coplanar waveguide employing periodic 3D coupling structures (CWP3DCS) was developed for application in miniaturized on-chip passive components on silicon radio frequency integrated circuits (RFIC). The CWP3DCS showed the shortest wavelength of all silicon-based transmission line structures that have been reported to date. Using CWP3DCS, a highly miniaturized impedance transformer was fabricated on silicon substrate, and the resulting device showed good RF performance in a broad band from 4.6 GHz to 28.6 GHz. The device as was 0.04 mm2 in size, which is only 0.74% of the size of the conventional transformer on silicon substrate.

  • The analysis of a coaxial cable with periodic slots as a leaky-wave antenna is considered. The mode matching method and method of moments with Galerkin testing procedure is then used to obtain the determinantal equation for the unknown leaky-wave propagating constant. Both technigues allow the fields to be obtained in any region, and the radiation characteristics of the structure. By resorting to a suitable numerical techniques, it is possible to calculate the leaky-wave propagating constants and the radiation patterns. Numerical results demonstrate the validity of the technique.

  • A MOSFET with multigates arrayed in periodic structure is studied as a transit time device for microwave amplification. The interactions between the periodic metal gates and the slow wave on the surface of the semiconductor can be observed in the vicinity of synchronism. The stability and the reciprocity of the active quadrupole are shown depending on the frequency and velocity of the carriers.

  • The purpose of this research is to study the vibration and acoustic pressure radiation from a thin isotropic flat plate stiffened by a rectangular array of beams, and excited by a time harmonic point force. These constructions on aircraft and ship structures are often subjected to fiequency dependent pressure fluctuations and forces. Forces from the these excitations induce structural vibrations in a wide range of fiequencies, which may cause such things as acoustic fatigue and internal cabin noise in the aircraft. It is thus important that the response characteristics and vibration modes of such periodic structures be horn. From this theoretical model, the sound pressure levels(SPL) in a semi-infinite fluid(water) bounded by the plate with the variation in the locations of an external time harmonic point farce on the plate can be calculated efficiently using three numerical tools such as the Gauss-jordan method the LU decomposition method md the IMSL numerical package.

  • The interaction of light with periodic patterns generates beautiful color patterns and interesting applications. The basic equation for understanding this phenomena is the grating equation. It tells us the angles, relative to a perpendicular to a grating with a specific period, into which light of a specific wavelength will be diffracted. But what it does not tell us is how much light will be directed into the various "orders" of the grating. It was found that by controlling the shape of the diamond point used to cut the periodic structure into the substrate, a traditional grating could be made to direct most of the light diffracted from it into a single order. This type of grating is referred to as a "blazed" grating. (omitted); grating. (omitted)

  • This study is aimed to numerically evaluate a sound absorption performance of periodically folded barriers. Based on the formulation for sound absorption of a locally reacting surface in a periodic arrangement, variations of the sound absorption with parameters such as the folded width and depth are investigated. In comparison with the sound absorption of a conventional barrier with a flat surface, it is found that the periodically folded barriers can achieve a higher sound absorption especially in the low frequency range.

  • A novel passive TE/TM polarization mode converter is fabricated by using poled polymer waveguides. The optic axis of the poling induced waveguide is slowly rotated by using a slowly varying structure of poling electrodes. Thus the polarization conversion is achieved as the guided mode propagates through the waveguide. The proposed device is simulated by a full vectorial beam propagation method (VBPM) for anisotropic medium. For the rotation length of 1 mm, the TE polarization of the guided mode is successfully converted to the TM polarization with negligible loss. Based on the simulation results, we fabricated the polarization converter which is tested by using 1.3 $\mu$m laser diode. TE to TM mode conversion is observed with a polarization extinction ratio higher than 30 dB, and the excess loss is less than 1 dB. The polarization conversion is relatively insensitive to wavelength since the device contains no periodic structures. These devices are easier to fabricate than others containing periodic structures.
