In this paper, an efficient short-time Fourier analysis method for the quasi-periodic signals is proposed via an optimal fixed-lag finite impulse response (FIR) smoother approach using a receding horizon scheme. In order to deal with time-varying Fourier coefficients (FCs) of quasi-periodic signals, a state space model including FCs as state variables is augmented with the variants of FCs. Through an optimal fixed-lag FIR smoother, FCs and their increments are estimated simultaneously and combined to produce final estimates. A lag size of the optimal fixed-lag FIR smoother is chosen to minimize the estimation error. Since the proposed estimation scheme carries out the correction process with the estimated variants of FCs, it is highly probable that the smaller estimation error is achieved compared with existing approaches not making use of such a process. It is shown through numerical simulation that the proposed scheme has better tracking ability for estimating time-varying FCs compared with existing ones.
A simplified model for the so-called ACRT(accelerated crucible rotation technique) Bridgman crystal growth was considered in order to investigate the principal effects of the periodic variation of angular velocity. Numerical solutions were obtained for Ro=0.5, Ra=4.236*10$_{6}$ and E=2.176*10$^{-3}$ . The effects of spin-up process combined with natural convection was investigated as a preliminary study. The spin-up time scale for the present problem was a little larger than that observed for homogeneous spin-up problems. Numerical results reveal that over a time scale of (H$^{2}$/.nu..omega.$_{f}$)$^{1}$2/ the forced convection due to the formation of Ekman layer predominates. When the state of rigid body rotation is attained, natural convection due to buoyancy emerges as the main driving force and them the steady-state is approached asymptotically. Based on our preliminary results with simple spin-up, several fundamental features associated with variation of rotation speed are successfully identified. When a periodic variation of angular velocity was imposed, the system response was also periodic. Due to effect of mixing, the heat transfer was enlarged. From the analysis of time-averaged Nusselt number along the bottom surface the effect of a periodic variation of angular velocity on the interface location could be indirectly identified.d.
The dual-mode strategy has been adopted in many constrained MPC methods. The size of stabilizable regions of states of MPC methods depends on the size of underlying feasible and positively invariant set and number of control moves. These results, however, could be conservative because the definition of positive invariance does not allow temporal leave of states from the set, In this paper, a concept of periodic invariance is introduced in which states are allowed to leave a set temporarily but return into the set in finite steps. The periodic invariance can defined with respect to sets of different state feedback gains. These facts make it possible for the periodically invariant sets to considerably larger than ordinary invariant sets. The periodic invariance can be defined for systems with polyhedral model uncertainties. We derive a MPC method based on these periodically invariant sets. Some numerical examples are given to show that the use of periodic invariance yields considerably larger stabilizable sets than the case of using ordinary invariance.

The dual-mode strategy has been adopted in many constrained MPC (Model Predictive Control) methods. The size of stabilizable regions of states of MPC methods depends on the size of underlying feasible and positively invariant sets and the number of control moves. The results, however, may perhaps be conservative because the definition of positive invariance does not allow temporal departure of states from the set. In this paper, a concept of periodic invariance is introduced in which states are allowed to leave a set temporarily but return into the set in finite time steps. The periodic invariance can be defined with respect to sets of different state feedback gains. These facts make it possible for the periodically invariant sets to be considerably larger than ordinary invariant sets. The periodic invariance can be defined for systems with polyhedral model uncertainties. We derive a MPC method based on these periodically invariant sets. Some numerical examples are given to show that the use of periodic invariance yields considerably larger stabilizable sets than the case of using ordinary invariance.
In this paper, mechanical properties of periodic foundation made of concrete and rubber are investigated by a parametric study using the finite element method (FEM). Periodic foundation is a special type of seismic isolation foundation used in civil engineering, which is inspired by the meso-scale structure of phononic crystals in solid-state physics. This type of foundation is capable of reducing the seismic wave propagating though the foundation, therefore providing additional protection for the structures. In the FEM analysis, layered periodic foundation is frequently modelled due to its simplicity in numerical modeling. However, the isolation effect of periodic foundation on nuclear power plant has not been fully discussed to the best knowledge of authors. In this work, we construct four numerical models of nuclear power plant with different foundations to investigate the seismic isolation effects of periodic foundations. The results show that the layered periodic foundation can increase the natural period of the nuclear power plant like traditional base isolation systems, which is beneficial to the structures. In addition, the seismic response of the nuclear power plant can also be effectively reduced in both vertical and horizontal directions when the frequencies of the incident waves fall into some specific frequency bandgaps of the periodic foundation. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the layered periodic foundation can reduce the amplitude of the floor response spectrum, which plays an important role in the protection of the equipment.
The behavior and flow characteristics of the floating wave energy converter were analyzed by using CFD in this study. The average significant wave height was confirmed as 0.5~2.0m from the Korean coastal sea area. This study was carried out by selecting a range of 1.0~1.6m in the wave height to simulate the operations of realistic wave energy converter system. The principle of a piston wave maker was applied in order to produce periodic wave. The behavior of the wave energy converter and the state of the wave overtopping according to the generated periodic wave were confirmed through the unsteady three-dimensional flow analysis. It was found that the wave overtopping rate according to the generated periodic wave was in range of the 11.6~30.0 kg/s.
In this paper, the Resistive Companion Form(RCF) analysis method is applied to analyze small signal stability of power systems including thyristor controlled FACTS equipments such as SVC. The eigenvalue sensitivity analysis algorithm in discrete systems based on the RCF analysis method is presented and applied to the power system including SVC. As a result of simulation, the RCF analysis method is proved very effective to precisely calculate the variations of eigenvalues or newly generated unstable oscillation modes after periodic switching operations of SVC. Also the eigenvalue sensitivity analysis method based on the RCF analysis method enabled to precisely calculate eigenvalue sensitivity coefficients of controller parameters about the dominant oscillation mode after periodic switching operations in discrete systems. These simulation results are different from those of the conventional continuous system analysis method such as the state space equation and proved that the RCF analysis method is very effective to analyze the discrete power systems including periodically operated switching equipments such as SVC.
We generalize some of the congruences in [20] to periodic knotted trivalent graphs. As an application, a criterion derived from one of these congruences is used to obstruct periodicity of links of few crossings for the odd primes p = 3, 5, 7, and 11. Moreover, we derive a new criterion of periodic links. In particular, we give a sufficient condition for the period to divide the crossing number. This gives some progress toward solving the well-known conjecture that the period divides the crossing number in the case of alternating links.
The purpose of this study is to provide the new method for selection of a close to optimal scalar control of linear time-periodic system. The case of scalar control is considered, the gain matrix being assumed to be at worst periodic with the system period T. The form of gain matrix may have various kinds but must have same period, for example, one of each element being represented by Fourier series. As the optimal gain matrix I consider the matrix ensuring the minimum value of the larger real part of the Poincare exponents of the system. Finally we present a pole placement algorithm to make the given system be stable. It is possible to determine the stability of the given periodic system without get the analytic solution. The application of the method does not require the construction of the Floquet solution. At present state of determination of the gain matrix for this case will be done only by systematic numerical search procedures.
