  • Purpose: The objective of this paper was to compare test standards regarding the performance and safety of agricultural tractors to identify the differences in test conditions, measurement tolerances, and test procedures. Based on the comparison, some recommendations were proposed for possible revisions or improvements to current tractor test standards. Methods: The test standards and codes of major standards development organizations (SDOs), such as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE), EC type approval, and the board of actions of the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratories (NTTL), were selected and analyzed. Comparison of the test standards: The ISO provides references for fuel and lubricants for tractor tests, and the OECD provides additional measurements for calculating fuel consumption characteristics during the power take-off (PTO) tests. The ISO, EC type approval, and the ASABE provide PTO protective device and the safety requirements. During drawbar power tests, seven transmission ratios are selected for fully automatic transmissions, according to the OECD. In case of hydraulic lift tests, ISO 789-2 and OECD Code 2 advise the use of a static lift force, while SAE J283 advises the use of additional dynamic lift capacity tests for a better representation of in-field operations. The OECD, the ISO, and EC type approval determine the seat index point (SIP), whereas the ASABE determines the seat reference point (SRP) for roll-over protective structure (ROPS) tests. Diversified measurement tolerances were among the braking performance test standards. The European Union (EU) has developed daily limits for vibration exposures with adaptations from ISO 2631-1. Electromagnetic compatibility evaluations are emerging of high-efficiency tractors due to the long-term conformance to electromagnetic emissions and interferences. Comparisons of tractor test standards discussed in this paper are expected to provide useful information for tractor manufacturers and standards development personnel to improve the performance and safety test standards of tractors.

  • In this work, we present a case study of using the assessments for the enhancement of students' learning motivation in engineering education. The assessments, given in between summative assessments such as midterms and finals, may have a component of formative evaluation, which are reported as very effective tools as the sources of feedback to improve teaching and learning. We studied how the students' performance is improved by additional tests in engineering education. Also, we examined the factors of successful results of the cooperative learning model, Student Teams-Achievement Division, which is based on imposing a number of tests, achieved in our previous work.

  • AC substation of urban transit supplies a suitable AC power on electricity vehicles. AC substation is verified electrical safety of system through pre-operation inspection on electrical installations to be supplied power from KEPCO. However, because test items and method for AC traction system are unprepared on pre-operation inspection, the general safety and performance verification of AC traction system are very insufficient. Therefore this paper analyze the test examples such as factory equipment tests, factory combined tests and railway tests for the safety and performance verification of AC traction system and present a suitable test items and test standard in domestic.

  • Rail car axles are very important parts for safety of passengers and structural integrity of vehicles. The axles are supported by bearings. To seal grease lubricating the bearings of freight cars, an oil seal has been developed. The developed oil seal is composed of an inner plate, an outer plate and a seal rubber. The friction between axle and housing with the developed oil seal is very low. The seals are designed for a minimum life expectancy of 800,000 kilometers service. In this study, an accelerated durability tests according to AAR Specification M-934-82 were carried out. In addition, various performance tests according to KS B 2804 were conducted.

  • In order to verify the statistical performance of the nonparametric tests used in the MARSSIM approach, all plausible contamination distribution types that can be encountered in a survey area should be investigated. As the first of such investigations, this study aims to perform the verification for normal distribution of the contamination in a survey area by simulating the collection of random samples from it through the Monte Carlo simulation. The results of the simulations conducted for a total of 81 simulation cases showed that Sign test and WRS test both exhibited an excellent statistical performance: 100% for the former and 98.8% for the latter. Therefore, in final status surveys of the MARSSIM approach, a high statistical performance can be expected in applying the nonparametric hypothesis tests to survey areas whose net contamination can be assumed to be normally distributed.

  • This paper describes the results of laboratory and field performance tests on the polymer modified asphalt binder and mixtures developed in this study for porous asphalt pavements. Various physical and mechanical laboratory tests including DSR and BBR tests are performed for two types of modified binders, and one type of binder is selected based on the binder testing results. Mix designs are conducted for the selected asphalt binder and a Japanese modified binder, respectively. Various performance tests including fatigue tests, wheel tracking tests, and moisture susceptibility tests are conducted for the domestic and Japanese porous asphalt mixtures. Test results indicate that the overall performance characteristics of the domestic mixture are similar to or better than those of the Japanese mixture. Based on the laboratory testing results, the domestic porous mixture is applied to a field test section. Periodic field investigations are conducted to evaluate the changes in noise level and air voids with time. The road noise analysis shows that the noise levels of the porous pavement keep increasing and, after two years, are similar to those of SMA pavements.

  • This paper describes the powering, seakeeping and maneuvering performances for a 2,500-ton class trimaran. Influence of the side-hull forms and location of those in longitudinal and transverse direction to resistance performance was systematically investigated by a series of model tests and numerical calculations. It was found that the longitudinal location of side-hulls was the most influential design parameter to the resistance performance of the trimaran and the optimum location of side-hull depends on ship speeds. When the side-hull stem is located near the primary wave hollow generated by the main hull, the trimaran shows the best resistance performance. Powering performance of the trimaran is superior to those of similar mono-hull ships. Seakeeping model tests for the trimaran were executed and the results were compared with the theoretical results of a similar mono-hull ship. Generally speaking, seakeeping performance of the trimaran is superior to that of a mono-hull ship. In particular, pitching and rolling performance of the trimaran is excellent, which is due to the increased length and breadth. Maneuvering model tests using a HPMM equipment were executed to evaluate the maneuvering performance of the trimaran. Maneuvering simulation was performed using the maneuvering coefficients from the model tests. The results show that the control ability of heading angle and the direction keeping stability of the trimaran is excellent, even though the turning performance is rather worse compared to those of a similar mono-hull ship.

  • In this study, the structural performance tests, i.e., static tests and dynamic tests of the composite wind turbine blade, were carried out by using the embedded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. The composite wind turbine blade used in the test is the 1/23 scale of the 750 kW composite blade. In static tests, the deflections along the blade were evaluated. Evaluations were carried out with simple beam theory and quadratic fitting method by using the embedded FBG sensors to predict the structural behavior with respect to the load. The deflections were compared to those obtained from the laser displacement sensor and electric strain gauges. They showed good agreement. Modal tests were performed to investigate the dynamic characteristics using the embedded FBG sensors. The natural frequencies obtained from the FBG sensors corresponding to the nine mode shapes of the blade were compared to those from the laser Doppler vibrometer. They were found to be consistent with each other. Therefore, it is concluded that the embedded FBG sensors have a great capability for measuring the structural performances of the composite wind turbine blade when structural performance tests are carried out.

  • Performance tests of the fuel pump for a turbopump unit have been successfully carried out in water environment. The tests are performed to evaluate the hydraulic and cavitation performances. The head and volute pressure distribution of the fuel pump followed the conventional similarity rule - unlike this, the secondary passage pressure distribution showed a small deviation from the conventional similarity rule. Also, critical cavitation number decreased as the rotational speed of the pump increased.
