The present study investigated children's self-perceived competence as related to (1) their perception of parental warmth and control (2) age and sex of child (3) the relationship of this perception to parents' educational level and children's sex. The subjects were 303 fourth and sixth grade children selected from three elementary schools in Seoul. The instruments were a children's self-perceived competence scale, and a perception of parental warmth and control scale. Frequencies, percentiles, mean, t-test, one-way-ANOVA, and $Scheffe{\acute{e}}$-test were used for data analysis. There were significant differences in children's self-perceived competence by perception of parental warmth and control. The children who perceived more parental warmth and control perceived themselves higher in cognitive and social competence and in self-worth. Children whose parents' were college graduates perceived highest parental warmth. Fourth grade children perceived themselves higher than sixth grade children in cognitive competence and in global self-worth. Boys perceived themselves higher than girls in physical competence. Boys perceived higher parental control than girls.
Objective: The current study aimed at examining the mediation effects of children's self-esteem and self-control in learning between perceived academic achievement at $4^{th}$ grade and $6^{th}$ grade. This article proposes that perceived academic achievement boosts self-esteem and self-control in learning and both in turn, influence subsequent perceived academic achievement. We especially attempted to empirically prove that a serial multiple mediation of self-esteem and self-control in learning between the perceived academic achievement at two time points exists. Methods: We analyzed the longitudinal data of 1,881 children from the $4^{th}$ to the $6^{th}$ wave data of the '2010 Korea Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS)' by means of a Hayes's PROCESS(2012) program. Results: The results revealed that perceived academic achievement at $4^{th}$ grade influenced children's self-esteem and self-control in learning at $5^{th}$ grade. Children' self-esteem and self-control in learning subsequently predicted perceived academic achievement at $6^{th}$ grade. Children's self-esteem significantly predicted self-control in learning supporting the hypothesis of serial multiple mediation. Conclusion/Implications: In conclusion, children's self-esteem and self-control in learning behaviors both mediated the association between perceived academic achievement at $4^{th}$ grade and at $6^{th}$ grade. The findings imply the importance of consideration of both psychosocial and behavioral aspects in understanding the academic performance during childhood.
This study used Structural Equation Modeling(SEM) to test causal relationships among perceived social supports, self-control, and subjective well-being in a sample of 325 5th and 6th grade elementary school children. Correlations of observed variables showed statistically significant among perceived social support, self-control, and subjective well-being. The goodness-of-fit of the hypothetical structural model in the study, perceived social support having direct effects on self-control and subjective well-being, and self-control, retaining the influence of perceived social support, having effects on subjective well-being-showed fairly acceptable levels. The results revealed that perceived social supports increase children's subjective well-being, and these supports also increase children's self-control, which indirectly influences children's subjective well-being.
The purpose of this study is to examine, according to sex and grade, the relationship and difference between mothers' parenting attitudes and self-perceived competences of their children. 197 children of the 4th through the 6th grade were selected from an elementary school in Daejeon area. We used the Perceived Competence Scale for Children (Harter, 1982) to measure their self-perceived competence and the Mother's Parenting Attitudes Scale (1990, Lee & Park) to measure parenting attitudes of their mothers. Major findings are as follows: First, there were significant differences in the children's self-perceived competence according to their perception of parental warmth and control. Children with more perception of parental warmth and consistent control considered themselves higher in cognitive and social competences and in self-worth. Boys perceived higher mother's consistent control and positive participation in parenting-attitudes than girls. Girls perceived themselves higher than boys in global self-worth. Next, Out of the three grades the 4th graders indicated more perception of attachment, authoritarian control, and positive participation in parenting attitudes. There was statistically no difference in self-perceived competences of children according to their grades. Finally, there were correlations between mothers' parenting attitudes and perceived competences of their children. Children with more perception of parental warmth, attachment, positive participation, and consistent control showed higher level of physical competence, social competence, and global self-worth.
Appearance management is a serious issue for adults and young people in Korean society. People of various ages have used diverse means to improve their appearances. This study focused on dieting as an appearance management behavior in female adolescents. Dieting behaviors are not just a means to improve appearance; they may also relate to individuals' beliefs and self-control. The importance of individual psychological/personality factors cannot, therefore, be ruled out. Such factors can help explain personality factors explain "what causes a compulsive diet and what factors can alleviate it". This study reviewed the literature on perfectionism and self-control as individual personality factors, and empirically examined the effects of these variables on perceived body distortion and dieting behaviors. We performed a structural equation model analysis to verify our hypothesis. The results are as follows: we found perfectionism to be positively related to perceived body distortion and dieting behaviors; we also found self-control to be negatively related to perceived body distortion though unrelated to dieting behaviors; finally, our analysis identified a relationship between perceived body distortion and dieting behaviors. These results indicate that perfectionism and self-control should be considered when conducting guidance and counseling sessions on issues related to dieting behaviors for adolescent' appearance management. This paper concludes by discussing the study's implications and limitations.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of perceived parents-adolescent communication style on adoescent’s self-efficacy. The subjexts of this study were 625 students selected at random from first and second grade of high school in Daegu. A questionnaire was used as survey method. Factor analysis, MANOVA and cluster analysis for data analysis and Scheffe test for post-hoc analysis were employed. The man findings were as follows: Firs, there were significant differences in the degree of adolescent’s self-efficacy according to perceive father-adolescent communication style. In case that adolescents perceived their father’s communication style as reasonable, the degree of self-control, self-confidence and attribution were higher than those of other cases such as non-interferential or impulsive communication style. The adolescents who perceived the father’s communication style as reasonable showed higher preference of difficult task than those who perceived it as non-interferential style. The adolescents who perceived father’s communication style as reasonable and non-interferential showed higher attribution than those who perceived it as impulsive style. Second, there were significant differences in the degree of adolescent’s self-efficacy according to perceived mother-adolescent communication style. In case that adolescents perceived their mother’s communication style as reasonable, the degree of self-control was higher than that of other cases such as non-interferential and impulsive communication style. The adolescents who perceived their mother’s communication style as reasonable showed higher self-confidence than those who perceived as impulsive style.
This study was undertaken in order to examine the relationship of self-efficacy, control, perceived health status. self-esteem, social support, and demographic characteristics to health promoting lifestyle of college students, and to determine factors affecting health promoting lifestyle of college students. The subjects were 92 students of one university in Taejon. The instruments used for this study were a survey of general characteristics, health promoting lifestyle(44 items), self-efficacy (28 items), self-esteem(10 items). control(8 items), perceived heath status(1 item), and social support(12 items). Analysis of data was done by use of mean, percentage, t-test. ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise regression with SAS program. The results of this study are as follows. 1) The average item score for the health promoting lifestyles was low at 2.30. In the sub-categories, the highest degree of performance was interpersonal support(2.90), and the lowest degree was exercise(1.67). 2) Male students showed a significant higher score in exercise subscale than female students. Students who had more income had higher scores in self actualization subscale. Students who's family had experienced severe disease had higher scores in health responsibility and interpersonal support subscale. Students who had experienced exercise had higher scores in total health promoting lifestyle, exercise, interpersonal support, and stress management subscale. 3) Significant correlation between perceived health status and self-efficacy, perceived health status and self-esteem, control and self-efficacy, control and self-esteem, control and social support, self-esteem and self-efficacy was found. 4) Self-efficacy and control revealed significant correlations with total health promoting lifestyle and all subscales of health promoting lifestyle except self actualization, A significant correlation between perceived health status and self actualization subscale was found. Self-esteem revealed significant correlations only with self actualization and interpersonal support subscale. 5) Significant correlations were found between most of the subscales of total health promoting lifestyle. 6) Self-efficacy was the highest factor predicting health promoting lifestyles of college students (30.55%). Self-efficacy and control accounted for 36.55% in health promoting lifestyle of college students.
The relations of parental differential treatment perceived by children to their self-esteem were examined. The subjects were 299 fifth-and sixth-grade elementary school children (162 boys and 137 girls) in Seoul. The data were collected using two kinds of questionnaires on maternal and paternal differential treatment and a child’s self-esteem. The major findings are as follows: Firstborns received more differential maternal affection than secondborns, and both boys and firstborns received more differential maternal control than girls and secondborns. Differential paternal control varied as a function of a child’s sex and birth order, in which boys and firstborns received more differential paternal control than girls and secondborns, but differential paternal affection did not vary. Maternal differential treatments were related to self-esteem only in girls, indicating that the more differential maternal affection they perceived, the higher self-esteem they had, and the more differential maternal control they perceived, the lower self-esteem they had. Paternal differential treatments were not related to self-esteem both for boys and girls. The study emphasizes the crucial role of mothers on their daughters.
When women are exposed to images of other attractive women such as media models, it is known that many go through a social comparison process and a contrast effect occurs which results in unfavorable perception and attitudes toward the self. This paper suggests women's perception of control over their appearance as one of the factors that may moderate the contrast effect of a social comparison with attractive media models. An experiment with 211 women was conducted to examine the differential effect of viewing attractive models versus non-human images on the responses of women with high/low perceived control over appearance. A two(Stimuli Type: attractive-model image vs. non-human image) by two(Perceived Control over Appearance: High vs. Low) MANCOVA model was tested with physical appearance anxiety, self-esteem, and body satisfaction as dependent variables and appearance orientation, body mass index, age, years of schooling, ethnicity, and marital status as covariates. A significant Perceived Control main effect on Physical Appearance Anxiety and Self-Esteem and a significant Stimuli Type by Perceived Control interaction effect on Physical Appearance Anxiety and Self-Esteem were found. Those who perceived high control over their appearance were more likely to have higher self-esteem and lower appearance anxiety. However, among those who saw attractive model's images, women perceived low appearance control showed less anxiety and higher body satisfaction than those perceived high appearance control.
This study explored the relationship of children's perceived social support and locus of control to their self-esteem. Subjects were 190 5th grade children. Instruments were the revised Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (1967), Dubow and Ullman's Social Support Appraisal Scale (1989), and Crandall's Intellectual Achievement Responsibility (1965). Data were analysed by t-tests and Pearson's correlations. Children with high perceived social support had higher self-esteem than children with low perceived social support. Children who attributed their success to internal factors had high self-esteem; children who attributed their success to external factors had low self-esteem. Successful children who attributed their success to external factors had low self-esteem, regardless of their social support level. Children who attributed their success to their abilities or hard work had high self-esteem only if they received high social support.
