Strip drawing of strain-hardening, viscoplastic materials with damage is analyzed by a rigid plastic finite element method. A process model is formulated using two state variables, one for strain hardening from slip dominated plastic distortion and the other for damage from growth of microvoids. Application of the model to aluminum strip drawing is given via implementation in a consistent penalty finite element formulation. The predicted density changes as a result of void growth are compared to those from experiments reported in the literature. The effects of drawing conditions such as drawing speed and die angle on the mechanical property chages are studied.
A numerical technique for simulating incompressible viscous flow with free surface is presented. The flow field is obtained by penalty finite element formulation. In this work, a modified volume of fluid (VOF) method which is compatible with 4-node element is proposed to track the moving free surface. This scheme can be applied to irregular mesh system, and can be easily extended to three dimensional geometries. Numerical analyses were done for two benchmark examples, namely the broken dam problem and the solitary wave propagation problem. The numerical results were in close agreement with the existing data. Illustrative examples were studied to show the effectiveness of the proposed numerical scheme.
The filling pattern technique based on the finite element method and Eulerian mesh advancement approach has been developed to analyze incompressible transient viscous flow with free surfaces. The governing equation for flow analysis is Navier-Stokes equation including inertia and gravity effects. The penalty and predictor-corrector methods are used effectively for finite element formulation. The flow front surface and the volume inflow rate are calculated using the filling pattern technique to select an adequate pattern among four filling patterns at each triangular control volume. Using the proposed numerical technique, the collapse of a dam has been analyzed to predict flow phenomenon of fluid and the predicted front positions versus time have been compared with the reported experimental result.
The Finite Element Solutions Is reported on solid-liquid phase change in porous media with natural convection including freezing. The model is based on volume averaged transport equations, while phase change is assumed to occur over a small temperature range. The FEM (Finite Element Method) algorithm used in this study is 3-step time-splitting method which requires much less execution time and computer storage the velocity-pressure integrated method and the penalty method. And the explicit Lax-Wendroff scheme is applied to nonlinear convective term in the energy equation. For natural convection including melting and solidification the numerical results show reasonable agreement with FDM (Finite Difference Method) results.
An efficient domain/boundary decomposition method is applied for heat transfer problems with non-linear thermal radiation boundaries. The whole domain of solids or structures is considered as set of subdomains, an interface, and radiation interfaces. In a variational formulation, simple penalty functions are introduced to connect an interface or radiation interfaces with neighboring subdomains that satisfy continuity conditions. As a result, non-linear finite element computations due to the thermal radiation boundaries can be localized within a few subdomains or radiation interfaces. Therefore, by setting up suitable solution algorithms for the governing finite element equations, the computational efficiency can be improved considerably. Through a set of numerical examples, these distinguishing characteristics of the present method are investigated in detail.
This paper deals with the development of variable-node element and its application to the adaptive h-version mesh refinement-recovery for the incompressible viscous flow analysis. The element which has variable mid-side nodes can be used in generating the transition zone between the refined and unrefined element and efficiently used for the construction of a refined mesh without generating distorted elements. A modified Guassian quadrature is needed to evaluate the element matrices due to the discontinuity of derivatives of the shape functions used for the element. The penalty function method which can reduce the number of the independent variables is adopted for the purpose of computational efficiency and the selective reduced integration is carried out for the convection and pressure terms to preserve the stability of solution. For the economical analysis of transient problems in which the locations to be refined are changed in accordance with the dynamic distribution of velocity gradient, not only the mesh refinement but also the mesh recovery is needed. The numerical examples show that the optimal mesh for the finite element analysis of a wind around the structures can be obtained automatically by the proposed scheme.
Three-dimensional Lagrangian fluid finite element is applied to seismic response analysis of an oil storage tank with a floating roof. The fluid element utilized in the present analysis is formulated based on the displacement finite element method considering only volumetric elasticity and its element stiffness matrix is derived by using one-point integration method in order to avoid volumetric locking. The method usually adds a rotational penalty stiffness to satisfy the irrotational condition for fluid motion and modifies element mass matrices through the projected mass method to suppress spurious hourglass-mode appeared in compensation for one-point integration. In the fluid element utilized in the present paper, a small hourglass stiffness is employed. The fluid and structure domains for the objective oil storage tank are modeled by eight-node solid elements and four-node shell elements, respectively, and the transient response of the floating roof structure or the free surface are evaluated by implicit direct time integration method. The results of seismic response analyses are compared with those by other method and the validation of the present analysis using three-dimensional Lagrangian fluid finite elements is shown.
The present paper presents multiscale modelling via coupling of the discrete and finite element methods. Theoretical formulation of the discrete element method using spherical or cylindrical particles has been briefly reviewed. Basic equations of the finite element method using the explicit time integration have been given. The micr-macro transition for the discrete element method has been discussed. Theoretical formulations for macroscopic stress and strain tensors have been given. Determination of macroscopic constitutive properties using dimensionless micro-macro relationships has been proposed. The formulation of the multiscale DEM/FEM model employing the DEM and FEM in different subdomains of the same body has been presented. The coupling allows the use of partially overlapping DEM and FEM subdomains. The overlap zone in the two coupling algorithms is introduced in order to provide a smooth transition from one discretization method to the other. Coupling between the DEM and FEM subdomains is provided by additional kinematic constraints imposed by means of either the Lagrange multipliers or penalty function method. The coupled DEM/FEM formulation has been implemented in the authors' own numerical program. Good performance of the numerical algorithms has been demonstrated in a number of examples.
