  • Effects of temperature and initial pH of the medium on production of citric acid from cheese whey permeate by Aspergillus niger were investigated. A. niger was cultivated at four different temperatures (27, 30, 33, $36^{\circ}C$) and four different pHs (2, 3, 4, 5) for 15 days. During the fermentation the concentrations of lactose and citric acid in the culture broth were measured. The maximum production of citric acid which was 33.9 g/l (68.26% yield based on lactose utilized) was obtained at $33^{\circ}C$ and pH 3. The production of citric acid was not much affected by shaking speed. However, the shaking speed was found to influence the form of pellets during cell growth.

  • As a result of the recent miniaturization and enhancement in the performance of thin film inductors and thin film transformers, there are increased demands for the thin films with a high magnetic permeability in the high frequency range, a high saturation magnetization, a high electrical resistivity, and a low coercive force. In order to improve high frequency properties, we will investigate anisotropy field by shape and size of pattern. The Fe-Al-O thin films of 16mm diameter and 1$\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness were deposited on Si wafer, using RE magnetron reactive sputtering technique with the mixture of argon and oxygen gases. The fabricating conditions are obtained in the working partial pressure of 2m Torr, O$_2$ partial Pressure of 5%, Input power of 400w, and Al pellets on an Fe disk with purity of 99.9%. For continuous thin film is the 4Ms of 19.4kG, H$\sub$c/ of 0.6Oe, H$\sub$k/ of 6.0Oe and effective permeability of 2500 up to 100MHz. In this work, we expect to enhanced effect of magnetic anisotropy on patterned of Fe-Al-O thin films.

  • The simulated spent PWR fuel pellet which is corresponding to the turnup of 33,000 MWD/MTU is prepared by adding 11 fission-product elements to UO$_2$. The simulated spent fuel pellet is treated at 40$0^{\circ}C$ in air (oxidation), at 110$0^{\circ}C$ in air (high-temperature treatment), and at $600^{\circ}C$ in hydrogen (reduction). The product is treated through additional addition and reduction up to 3 cycles. Pellets are completely pulverized by the first oxidation, and the high-temperature treatment causes particle and crystallite to grow and surface to be smooth, and thus particle size significantly increases and surface area decreases. The reduction following the high-temperature treatment decreases much the particle size by means of the formation of intercrystalline cracks. The particle size decreases a little during the second oxidation and reduction cycle and then remains nearly constant during the third and fourth cycles. Surface area of pounder increases progressively with the repetition of oxidation and reduction cycles, mainly due to the formation of Surface cracks. The degradation of surface area resulting from high-temperature treatment is restored by too subsequent resulting oxidation and reduction cycles.

  • Air-oxidation experiments on unirradiated and irradiated UO$_2$ were performed at temperature from 150 to 375$^{\circ}C$ for investigating the long-term storage behavior of spent PWR fuel. The rate of oxidation was monitored by a thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA) and an X-ray diffraction(XRD). The correlation between the onset-time for U$_3$O$_{8}$ formation and temperature was given as follows, logt(hr) = -12.89+7650/T(K), 423$_2$ pellet, the oxidation rate of irradiated UO$_2$ increase more rapidly at the initial stage and shows a lower saturation point at the later Stage. The Oxidation rate of high bumup UO$_2$ and gadolinia-doped UO$_2$(Gd$_2$O$_3$-UO$_2$) were observed to be much slower than that of unirradiated UO$_2$ pellets.s.

  • The microstructure and varistor properties of ZPCCAE ($ZnO-Pr_6O_{11}-CoO-Cr_2O_3-Al_2O_3-Er_2O_3$) ceramics were investigated with different erbium amounts. Analysis of the microstructure indicated that the ceramics consisted of ZnO grains as a bulk phase, and intergranular layers (mixture of $Pr_6O_{11}$ and $Er_2O_3$) as a minor secondary phase. With the increase of the doped erbium amount, the densities of sintered pellets increased from 5.63 to $5.82g/cm^3$, and the average grain size decreased from 9.0 to $5.7{\mu}m$. The increase of the doped erbium amount increased the breakdown field from 2,649 to 5,074 V/cm, and the nonlinear coefficient from 27.6 to 39.1. It was found that in the range of 0.25 to 0.5 mol%, the doped erbium had little effect on the microstructure and electrical properties.

  • Powder compaction technology is widely used to prepare thermal battery components. This method, however, is limited by the size, thickness, and geometry of the battery components. This limitation leads to excessive cell capacity, overweight, and higher cost of the pellets, which decreases the specific capacities and delays the activation time of thermal batteries. $FeS_2$ thin-film cathodes were fabricated by tape-casting technology and analyzed by SEM and EDS in this paper. The residual organic binder of the $FeS_2$ thin-film cathodes decreased with the temperature of the heat treatment, which improved the specific capacity because of the lower resistance. Specific capacities of the $FeS_2$ thin-film cathodes decreased because of the higher residual binder and the restrictive reaction of active materials with molten salts as the thickness increased. $FeS_2$ thin-film cathodes showed much higher specific capacity (1,212.2 As/g) than pellet cathodes (860.7 As/g) at the optimal heat-treatment temperature ($230^{\circ}C$).

  • Suspended and sinking particles were collected in austral summer during ODP Leg 119 to the Indian Ocean sector of the Antarctic Ocean. Field work was carried out at four sampling sites in Prydz Bay. Two of these sites were located in the Outer Bay, and two in the Inner Bay. At the four locations, a total of ten deployments of a sediment trap array were made. The concentrations of chlorophylls and their degradation products both in suspended and sinking particulate matter in Prydz Bay were analyzed using HPLC. Chlorophylls a and c were the dominant algal pigments both in suspended and sinking particles. Because of the abundance of fecal pellets at Site 740, the mean fluxes at 200 m averaged 6 fold greater than that at 50 m. This implies that a dense swarm of zooplankters, presumably large copepods and/or salps, may "feed and excrete" mainly in between 100-200 m depths at this site, closest to land in Prydz Bay. Interestingly, The flux of phaeophorbide a was generally similar in magnitude to that of chlorophyll a throughout the study areas. This is an evidence that materials escaping from near-surface regions in austral summer derive mainly from the gazing of zooplankters. "New production" from sediment-trapped CHL pigment fluxes in Prydz Bay was estimated using f-ratio of 0.15, ranging from 520 to $1,605\;{\mu}gC\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$.

  • This paper estimates the nation wide amount of forest biomass arising from management operation for domestic forest based on the simulations that are composed of five scenarios for selecting the target area of thinning. In 2009, the forest biomass arising from thinning is estimated to be 6,642,174 $m^3$. The estimates of forest biomass in 2015 and 2018 are 5,935,140 $m^3$ and 5,682,538 $m^3$, respectively. Since the target forest for thinning policy is estimated to be decreasing, the biomass generated by thinning will decline too. The estimates of forest biomass can be used to induce more effective application of woody biomass rather than one-sided use such as raw materials for solid fuels including pellets and charcoals.

  • Forest biomass can be used as various types of raw materials such as pulp, wood pellets, solid charcoals and so on. This paper estimates the nation wide amount of forest biomass based on the projection of forest areas for its effective and economic use. Several trend equations are used in projecting the forest areas. In 2009, the forest biomass arising from thinning is estimated be 6,591,575 $m^3$. The estimates of forest biomass in 2015 and 2018 are 6,375,627 $m^3$ and 6,284,779 $m^3$, respectively. Since the forest areas are projected to be declining, the biomass generated by thinning will decrease. This implies that the new alternatives for supplying raw materials for biofuels must be prepared before then.

  • Fish pathology is one of the main scientific bases upon which this expansion in aquaculture has been dependent and requires a wide knowledge of the environmental constraints, the physiology and characteristic of the various pathogens, the responses of the host, and the methods by which they may be controlled. The primary disease and parasite problems in aquaculture animals related to viral, bacteria, fungal and protozoan epizootics. Parasitic nematodes, trematodes and cestodes are commonly found in aquaculture animals, but seldom are they present in concentrations sufficient to cause significant problems, When an epizootic does occur and chemical treatment is indicated, the appropriate chemical must be selected an properly applied. We have antibiotics, sulfa, nitrofuran and other chemicals for treatment of fish diseases, Some may be mixed with the feed during formulation, added to the pellets of feed as a surface coating, given in the form of an injection or used as a bath. Even though a drug or chemical has been officially approved for use in aquaculture, the substance should never be used unless there is a clear need, Some of the reasions for this view are as follows: (1) the constant use of antibiotics can leak to the development of resistant strains of bacteria, (2) biofilter efficiency may be impaired or destroyed by chemicals added to closed recirculating water systems, and(3) the injudicious use of chemical can have a damaging effect on the environment as well as on human.
