  • This study was designed to test the differences in children's social information-processing patterns and bahavioral characteristics among four different groups of peer status, and to evaluate the predictability of peer status from social information-processing and social behavior. In addition, age and sex differences were assessed. The subjects were 80 boys and 80 girls identified as popular, average, neglected, and rejected by their peers in the first and the third grade. They responded to a sociometric test and three hypothetical social dilemmas, while behavioral characteristics were rated by their teachers. The data were analyzed by ANOVAs, and discriminant analyses. The results showed that children's social information-processing patterns were not significantly different by peer status except the number of interventions requested. Whereas children's behavioral characteristics were different by peer status in all of the four domains. Children's social information-processing patterns and behavioral characteristics were different in part by age and sex. The important predictors of peer status were hyperactive-distractive, anxious-withdrawn, sociable-prosocial behaviors, and the number of interventions requested.

  • This study examined the relationships of children's peer competence with maternal parenting styles and children's emotion regulation. Thirty boys and thirty-one girls in 3 to 6 years of age and their mothers participated. Mothers responded to Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire(Hwang, 1997), and teachers rutted each child using Peer Competence Scale(Park & Rhee, 2001) and Emotional Intelligence Scale(Lee, 1997). Mothers'acceptive parenting style and children's abilities to regulate emotion were positively related to children's peer competence. Children's emotion regulation rather than mothers' parenting styles predicted peer competence.

  • This study investigates aggressive children's perceptions of their social acceptance in conjunction with peer ratings of social acceptance. The subjects were 520 children in the fifth through sixth grades. Children completed questionnaires that assessed self-perceptions of social acceptance. In addition, they completed peer nominations that assessed peer victimization, aggression, and peer acceptance, while their teachers rated children's externalizing problems. The results suggest that aggressive children's self-perceived social acceptance is inflated in relation to the ratings of their peers. For aggressive-rejected children, a highly positive self-perception was shown to be not a protective factor, but rather a defensive posture that places the children at added risk.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of perceived parental neglect and abuse and peer attachment on school life adjustment according to children's gender. A total of 2,264 5th graders from the second Korea Child-Adolescent Panel Survey participated. The results were as follows: First, the boys had higher parental neglect and abuse scores than the girls, while the girls had higher peer attachment scores and higher school life adjustment scores than the boys. Second, every sub-element of school life adjustment was significantly negatively correlated with parental neglect and abuse regardless of the children's gender. Every sub-element of school life adjustment was significantly positively correlated with the 'communication' and 'trust' sub-elements of peer attachment regardless of the children's gender. In the case of the boys, the 'study activity' and 'peer relation' sub-elements of school life adjustment were significantly negatively correlated with the 'alienation' sub-element of peer attachment. For the girls, every sub-element of school life adjustment was significantly negatively correlated with the alienation sub-element of peer attachment. Finally, the factors of 'parental neglect and abuse', and the peer attachment sub-elements of 'communication', and 'trust' significantly predicted the boys' school life adjustment, while for girls, the significant predictors were 'parental neglect and abuse', 'communication', 'trust', and 'alienation'.

  • The purpose of the research was to examine the moderating effects of children's prosocial behavior on a potential relationship of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and peer rejection as well as friendship. Participants consisted of 252, 3 year old including 136 boys and 116 girls. They were recruited from day care centers and preschools in Gyeonggi province and Incheon city. Prosocial behavior and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder syndrome were assessed based on teacher ratings. A peer nomination inventory was used to assess peer rejection and friendship. Children were asked to nominate three peers that they liked and considered friends as well as three peers that they did not like and did not consider friends. Findings suggested that prosocial behavior moderated the relation between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and peer rejection as well as friendship. ADHD was related to peer rejection and fewer friends for children with lower levels of prosocial behavior. However, the association of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and peer rejection was not significant for children who had higher levels of prosocial behavior. Moreover, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder did not influence to friendship for children who had the higher levels of prosocial behavior. The results indicate that increasing prosocial behavior may improve peer relationship functioning of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the moderating effect of negative emotionality on the association between mother-child intimacy and peer acceptance based on differential susceptibility model. According to differential susceptibility model, negative emotionality and difficult temperament is potential differential susceptibility factors. The participants were 3-year-old children recruited from preschools and daycare centers. Teachers completed measurement of negative emotionality. Peer acceptance was measured by peer nomination. Mother-child intimacy was reported by mothers. The results presented that negative emotionality significantly moderated the relation between mother-child intimacy and peer acceptance only for boys. For boys with high level of negative emotionality, mother-child intimacy significantly predicted peer acception. However, for boys with low level of negative emotionality, mother-child intimacy did not associate with peer acception. For girls, negative emotionality did not significantly influence the association between mother-child intimacy and peer acceptance. These findings support differential susceptibility hypothesis that vulnerable children are susceptible to positive parenting effects.

  • The study aims to investigate the children's adaptability to early school circumstances and their relationships to teachers and to peers. The examination was done on 110 children aged 4 or 5 at a kindergarten and two child care centers in Seoul. Their 'adaptability to early school' and their 'relationships to teachers and to peers' were rated by their teachers. On the whole, the children subjects are on good terms with their teachers and peers, and they adapt well to early schools. But according to age groups, there were significant differences in the teacher-to-child relationships. Compared to boys, girls show more' adaptability to the early schools', more 'closeness to teachers' and more 'prosociality in peer group'. The 'closeness to teachers' has a positive relation to the 'sociability', 'prosocial behaviors' and 'leadership of peer group', but the 'conflict with teachers' has a negative relation to the peer group relationships. And the' children's relationships with teachers and with peers' were significantly related to their early school adaptability. The 'prosociality', the 'closeness' and the' dependency' were significantly related to the' adaptability to early school' in order.

  • This study investigated the relation between participation in bullying, peer relationship and children's social status. We examined the classified types of social status among 700 fifth and sixth grade elementary schools students. The data were obtained by administering a self-reported questionnaire. Differences were identified with participation in bullying behavior, intimacy friendship and peer support as peer relationship. The collected data were subjected to a descriptive and F-test analysis using the SPSS software program. The results conveyed that social status was different according to the gender difference. Rejected boys presented more bully, reinforce, assistant and victim behaviors. Neglected boys were more victims of bullying. Defensive behavior was more apparent in popular and neglected boys. Furthermore, such boys had high intimate friendships. Popular boys presented distinctively more peer support. Rejected boys represented less intimate friendship and peer support. On the other hand, popular girls portrayed more defensive behavior. However, rejected girls and neglected girls had less defensive behaviors. Victim behaviors were less coherent in popular and neglected girls. Intimate friendship and peer support were mostly apparent in popular girls. Rejected boys represented less intimate friendship and peer support.

  • This study examined the effect of parental achievement-oriented expectation on high school students' depression and verified the mediating effect of peer relations on relations. Data were derived from the 7th wave (2016) of Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS), and 1,979 high school students were included. Descriptive statistics analysis, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and a Sobel test were conducted using STATA. The main results were as follows. First, male adolescents perceived higher parental achievement-oriented expectation, lower peer relations, but lower depression than female adolescents. Second, parental achievement-oriented expectation was negatively related to adolescent peer relations but positively related to adolescent depression. This implies that adolescents whose parents have a higher level of achievement-oriented expectation have lower level of peer relations and higher level of depression. Third, adolescents' peer relations significantly mediated the relation between parental achievement-oriented expectation and high school students' depression. The result of Sobel test supported the significance of the mediating effect. The results highlighted a negative impact of parental achievement-oriented expectation on adolescents' mental health, and addressed how parental achievement-oriented expectation affects adolescents' depression by showing an important mechanism of peer relations, which was missed in previous research.
