Switching-Mode BJT Driver for Self-Oscillated Push-Pull Inverters

  • Self oscillating current fed push pull resonant inverters can be controlled without using special drivers. Dc current flows through the choke coil and the power switches, although the driving signals of the power switches are sinusoidal. When the base current is near zero, the transistors cannot be operated in switching mode. Hence higher switching power losses and instantaneous peak power during off transitions are observed. In this study, an alternative design has been proposed to overcome this problem. A prototype circuit has been built which provides dc bias current to the base of the transistors. Experimental results are compared with theoretical calculations to demonstrate the validity of the design. The proposed design decreases the peak and average power losses by about 8 times, when compared to conventional designs.

Negative Differential Resistance Devices with Ultra-High Peak-to-Valley Current Ratio and Its Multiple Switching Characteristics

  • We propose a novel negative differential resistance (NDR) device with ultra-high peak-to-valley current ratio (PVCR) by combining pn junction diode with depletion mode nanowire (NW) transistor, which suppress the valley current with transistor off-leakage level. Band-to-band tunneling (BTBT) Esaki diode with degenerately doped pn junction can provide multiple switching behavior having multi-peak and valley currents. These multiple NDR characteristics can be controlled by doping concentration of tunnel diode and threshold voltage of NW transistor. By designing our NDR device, PVCR can be over $10^4$ at low operation voltage of 0.5 V in a single peak and valley current.

Adaptive Control of Peak Current Mode Controlled Boost Converter Supplied by Fuel Cell

  • Adaptive control of a peak current mode controlled (PCM) boost converter supplied by a PEM fuel cell is described in this paper. The adaptive controller with reference model and signal adaptation is developed in order to compensate the deviation of the response during the change of the operating point. The procedure for determining the adaptive algorithm's weighting coefficients, based on a combination of the pole-zero placement method and an optimization method is proposed. After applying the proposed procedure, the optimal adaptive algorithm's weighting coefficients can be determined in just a few iterations, without the use of a computer, thus greatly facilitating the application of the algorithm in real systems. Simulation and experimental results show that the dynamic behavior of a highly nonlinear control system with a fuel cell and a PCM boost converter, can fairly accurately be described by the dynamic behavior of the reference model, i.e., a linear system with constant parameters.

  • 기존의 버스트 모드 자동전력제어 회로는 데이터 율이 증가함에 따라 마크밀도 변화 영향을 심하게 받아 에러를 야기하였다. 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 높은 데이터 율에서도 마크밀도의 영향을 배제시킬 수 있는 새로운 구조의 첨두 비교기를 고안하고 이를 자동전력제어 회로에 적용하여 마크밀도 변화에 강한 버스트 모드 자동전력제어 회로를 제안하였다. 제안한 자동전력제어 회로 내의 첨두 비교기는 높은 데이터 율에서 뿐만 아니라 광범위한 기준전류 및 차 전류 변화에서도 미소한 마크밀도 변화 영향만을 보여 마크밀도 변화에 매우 강한 특성을 확인 할 수 있었다.

  • This paper presents design and stability analysis of the constant frequency Flyback type converter using average current-mode control. The average current-mode control has been recently reported, and superior characteristics over a peak current-mode control such as a good tracking performance of an average current, no slope compensation and noise immunity. By the improvement of PM(Phase Margin) obt from applying the compensator in the current loop, the stability of designed flyback convert more improved.   • New discrete time domain models for the peak current controlled (PCC) power LED drivers in continuous conduction mode include for the first time the effects of time delay in the pulse-width-modulator. Realistic amounts of time delay are found to have significant effects on the average output LED current and on the critical inductor value at the boundary between two conduction modes. Especially, the time delay can provide an accurate LED current for the PCC buck converter with a wide input voltage. The models can also predict the critical inductor values at the mode boundary as functions of the input voltage and the time delay.

평균전류모드제어의 전류응답예측을 위한 새로운 이산시간 소신호 모델 (New Discrete-time Small Signal Model of Average Current Mode Control for Current Response Prediction)

  • 본 논문에서는 평균전류모드제어를 이용하는 컨버터의 전류응답을 예측할 수 있는 새로운 이산시간 소신호 모델을 구한다. 평균전류모드제어는 최대전류모드제어와 달리 전류제어를 위해 복잡한 보상기 회로를 사용하므로 컨버터의 동작 특성 해석이 어렵다. 평균전류모드제어를 사용하는 컨버터의 소신호 전류응답을 예측하기 위해 샘플러모델을 제안하고, 이 모델로부터 새로운 이산시간 소신호 모델을 구한다. 제안된 방식은 기존 방식과 달리 복잡한 형태의 보상기를 사용하는 컨버터에도 적용 가능하다. 제안한 새로운 이산시간 소신호 모델을 이용한 예측 결과를 스위칭 모델 시뮬레이션 프로그램인 PSIM을 이용한 시뮬레이션 결과 및 실험결과와 비교하여 제안한 새로운 이산시간 소신호 모델의 우수성을 보인다.

  • We report hybrid and passive mode-locking results of tilted-stripe AlGaAs semiconductor laser traveling wave amplifiers with saturable absorbers. Dependence ofthe pulse width on the mode locking frequency, the bandwidth of spectral filters, and the bias current of the laser amplifier are investigated. We generate 4 ps optical pulses by using the hybrid mode locking technique. The repetition rate and the peak power of generated pulses are 516 MHz and 170 mW, respectively. The tuning range of uor mode locked laser is 10 nm with the center wavelength of 780 nm. We also generate 2.6 ps optical pulses with peak power of 830 mW by using the passive mode locking technique.

  • 다상 교호 컨버터에서 인덕턴스가 불일치 할 때 첨두전류 제어기를 사용하는 경우에 각 상의 평균 전류는 동일하지 않다. 본 논문에서는 각 상의 인덕턴스가 불일치한 경우에 첨두전류 모드에서 평균전류가 동일해지는 전류분배 제어기를 제안한다 제어기는 과도상태에서도 전류의 평형이 잘 이루어질 수 있도록 설계한다. 제안된 방법을 2상과 4상 교호 승압컨버터에 적용시켰으며, 실험 결과를 통해 인덕턴스가 불일치한 경우에도 첨두전류 모드에서 전류평형이 잘 이루어짐을 보인다.

  • Three different current-mode control schemes, peak current-mode control, charge control, and average current-mode control, are investigated for applications to asymmetrical half-bridge dc-to-dc converters. The principles, implementation, and performance of the three control schemes are compared in an attempt to identify the irrespective merits and limitations. Design examples for feedback compensations are given for the three control schemes. A 50 W experimental asymmetrical half-bridge dc-to-dc converter was used to experimentally verify the theoretical results of the paper.
