  • We investigated the selection and sensitivity to environmental mutagen of silkworm reared artificial diet to develop all-year-round operation system using a specific locus mutation of Bombyx mori. In the system, mutagenicity could be detected by the egg colour manifested by the pe and/or re genes, which is a kind of recessive visible mutation of the insect. Among, hi, Backokjam, C5, and N12, varieties of silkworm, AT was higher than other varieties in eclosion rate of female, and C5 and N12 were higher in fertility of male. Bakokjam was higher in eclosion rate of female, rate of moth to lay eggs normally in female and male, no. of eggs layed in female and fertility of female. As above results, Bakokjam was finally selected as the most fitness one among varieties of silkworm reared artificial diet. But the sensitivity to mutagen was lower than other varieties. In the sensitivity to mutagen, AT was the most sensitivity to mutagen in tested varieties of silkworm. To use AT variety in this system, AT was improved major characteristics, eclosion rate, fertility, rate of moth to lay eggs normally, and so on, by crossing of other varieties including Bakokjam.

  • Vertigo is one of the subjective symptoms which appears commonly in so many diseases that it is often neglected. But it needs active medical care because it can be a forewarning of serious illness like cerebral apoplexy. This thesis makes a study of vertigo in view of Hyungsang medicine. The followings are the conclusion drawn in diagnosis and treatment of Vertigo: Excess in the upper and deficiency in the lower part(上實下虛) is a main cause of male vertigo. Deficiency in the upper and excess in the lower part(下虛上實) is a general cause of female vertigo. Vertigo is also caused by the insufficiency of the kidney water(腎水) or reservoir of marrow(髓海). persons of Jung pe(精科) with large check bones , those of Fish type(魚類) with Dig mouth and thick lips ; and those with large heads are mainly attacked by this cause. A fleshy person's vertigo comes from the deficiency of Ki and damp phlegm(氣虛濕症) so it is cured by reinforcing Ki, removing dampness and dispelling phlegm. A slim person's vertigo comes from the deficiency of blood and dryness heat(血虛有火) so it is treated by tonifying the blood, cleaning heat away the heat. In case of womanly shaped male and manly shaped female, the vertigo is due to the phlegm fire. Wind-heat(風熱) can cause vertigo generally 施 the persons of following types : wind type(風人), running animal type(走類),bird type(烏類), and Yangmyung meridian type (陽明形). Vertigo also comes from consumption. The deficiency of Ki can be a cause of vertigo in case of male; persons with pale complexion; and those with pronounced noses. The deficiency of blood can be a reason of vertigo in the persons of Hyul type(血科) and those with pale eyelids and lips. The hypofunction of the splean and stomach brings on the deficiency of Ki and blood, which can give rise to the vertigo for those with large nose and mouth. The old people's vertigo comes from the hypofunction of Ki, blood, Yin and Yang.

  • The effects of earthworm casts as a plant growth media on the growth of orchardgrass seedlings and the changes of physico-chemical properties in worm casts mixture soils were investigated during the growth period of 1998. Worm casts were mixtured with vermiculite, perlite and peat moss, and mixture ratios of worm casts with commercial recommended soil were 100:0(control), 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100, respectively. The results were obtained as follows; 1. Plant length(PL) was increased in higher mixture ratios of worm casts and peat moss than those of other mixture ratios of commercial recommended soils. 2. Number of tillers(NT) were significantly increased in mixture ratios of worm casts and peat moss(50:50) and 100% of vermiculite. 3. Root length(RL) was significantly differences between mixture ratios at the worm casts, and the highest value was obtained at all mixture ratios of worm casts and perlite. 4. Dry weight of leaf(LW) was not significantly differences at mixture ratios of 50:50 in all treatments. Especially, between the mixture ratios of worm casts with peatmoss(25:75) and peat moss(75:25) were not significantly differences in dry weight of leaf(LW). The highest value of dry weight of leaf(LW) was obtained at mixture ratios of peat moss and worm casts. 5. Dry weight of tillers(SW) was not significantly differences at mixture ratios of 50:50 in all treatments, and peat moss(75:25) and vermiculite(75:25), respectively. 6. biological yield(BY) at all treatments were increased by yield components of dry weight of tillers(SW), dry weight of root(RW) and length of root(RL). 7. The biological yield of orchardgrass seedlings was greatly increased with mixture ratios of worm casts and peat moss over the 50%.

  • This experiment was carried out to obtain the maximum quantity of essential oil on the basis of harvesting time, cultivation regions & types, and drying methods. We have selected 6 native and introduced herbs viz. $Thymus$ $quinquecostatus$, $Agastache$ $rugosa$, $Chrysanthemum$ $indicum$, $Rosmarinus$ $officinalis$, $Chamaemelum$ $nobile$, and $Lavandula$ $stoechas$. The quantity of essential oil ranged from 0.06% to 3.46% in all six herbs. Native herbs produce 30.5% higher quantity of oil in comparison to introduced herbs. The quantity of essential oil obtained from $Lavandula$ $stoechas$ was 3.46%, followed by $Rosmarinus$ $officinalis$ 2.89%, while minimum in $Agastache$ $rugosa$ 0.60%. Higher quantity of essential oil obtained if they are cultivated under rain shelter culture (PE film) in comparison to open field conditions. Recovery of essential oil is always high if herbs flower in July. Semi-alpine region was found better than the plain region for herbs production. Quantity of oil is high if oil is extracted from fresh herbs followed by freezed herbs, shade dry and hot wind dry herbs. As far as plant part is concern flower produced maximum oil than any other part.

  • Onion has been reported to contain various organosulfur compounds which have antibiotic and anticarcinogenic properties and flavonoid like quercetin which is a valuable natural source of antioxidants. Carbohydrates in onion constitute about 80% of dry matter, and the major non-structural carbohydrate of onion bulb is fructo-oligosaccharides, well known as fructan, followed by glucose, fructose, and sucrose. The sugar concentration is associated with dormancy and storage life of onion, occurring as decrease in glucose, fructose and fructan, particularly towards the end of storage. Forced air pre-drying for 15-20 days at room temperature is an essential procedure to reduce freezing injury and sprouting, then onion bulbs can be stored at $0^{\circ}C$ for 6 months to control sprouting and decay. Bacterial soft rot caused by $Erwinia$ and $Pseudomonas$ is the main postharvest disease when the bulbs are infected with the bacteria and stored at room temperature. Browning in sliced onion is due to oxidation of phenolic compounds by polyphenol oxidase and it can be inhibited by citric acid treatment, packing with nitrogen gas, and polyethylene film.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of a by-product feed-based silage (BF silage) feeding on behavior patterns of growing Hanwoo steers. A total of 10 Hanwoo steers (11 months old, 302kg of body weight) were assigned to 2 dietary treatments: the control (concentrate mix + free access to rice straw), and the treatment (concentrate mix + free access to BF silage). The behavior patterns were observed for 48 hours. The intakes of dry matter (DM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) of the treatment group were higher than those of the control group. Eating time, ruminating time and resting time were not different between the control and treatment. But, the intake time per kg DM was higher for the control than treatment. The number of bolus, total chewing frequency, number of ruminating per bolus and number of bolus per minute were not different between the control and treatment. But the chewing frequency per bolus was higher in the treatment than control (p<0.05), and feed value index was lower in treatment than control (p<0.05). Frequencies of drinking and defecating were not different between the two groups, but the frequency of urinating was higher for the treatment (p<0.05) than control. Eating rate, ruminating efficiency and chewing efficiency were much higher in the treatment group than control (p<0.05). These results indicate that the replacement of conventional rice straws with the BF silage (physically effective NDF, about 25%) did not affect the ruminating behaviors of Hanwoo steers significantly.

  • A monoclonal antibody to PCNA, which can be used on routinely processed tissue, was applied to 25 cases of gastric adenomas and 64 cases of gastric adenocarcinomas in order to diffentiate adenoma and adenocarcinoma and also to evaluate the prognostic value in adenocarcinoma. The results were summerized as follows: The peNA labelling index was $29.14{\pm}12.77%$ in control, $44.09{\pm}17.11%$ in adenoma and $80.15{\pm}10.69$ in adenocarcinoma, resulting in significant increase in adenocarcinoma compared to adenoma. In adenocarcinoma, no significant correlation was observed between PCNA labelling index and histologic grade, and there was increased tendency of PCNA labelling index in proportion to depth of invasion without statistical significance. The PCNA index was significantly increased in advanced adenocarcinoma compared to early gastric carcinoma, and also in positive nodal metastasis group than in negative group. From above results, the PCNA stain will be able to provide a helpful method for the differential diagnosis between gastric adenoma and adenocarcinoma, and could be a useful prognostic factor in adenocarcinoma if other factors are considered together.

  • This study investigated the changes in the quality of fresh-cut lotus roots that were treated with hot water. Lotus roots were purchased from Daegu, Korea. They were washed, peeled, and cut into lcm-thick slices with a ceramic knife. The peeled and sliced lotus roots were dipped for 45 sec in water at 30, 55, and $80^{\circ}C$. After they were air-dried at room temperature, the slices were packed in polyethylene films and stored at $4^{\circ}C$ for 12 d. Then the changes in the weight loss, color, total viable cell, and sensory characteristics were measured. Generally, the weight loss of the lotus roots that were treated with hot water slightly increased. The application of the heat treatment delayed the browning of the lotus roots, especially the treatment with $55^{\circ}C$ hot water. The L and a values of the lotus roots that were treated with $80^{\circ}C$ hot water significantly increased during their storage, though. The heat treatment effectively inhibited the growth of microorganisms. The organoleptic quality of the lotus roots that were treated with $55^{\circ}C$ hot water was the best.

  • Juvenile olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus (mean weight 66.7±7.1 g; mean length 19.2±0.9 cm) in a bio-floc environment were exposed to microplastic (PE: polyethylene, size 40-48 ㎛) at 0, 4, 20, 100, 500 and 2,500 mg L-1 for 96 hours. No P. olivaceus deaths were observed following microplastic exposure. In the plasma components, calcium was significantly decreased whereas there was no significant change with magnesium following microplastic exposure. Glucose was significantly decreased with over 100mg L-1 at 48 hours and 20mg L-1 at 96 hours. Cholesterol was significantly decreased with over 20mg L-1 after 48 hours, whereas there was no significant change in the total protein content. In enzymatic plasma components, the AST(Aspartate aminotransferase) was significant decreased by microplastic exposure. The results of this study indicate that acute exposure to microplastic induces blood physiological changes in P. olivaceus.
