  • A sustainable method was developed for the upgrade of biomass derived vanillin (a typical model compound of lignin) into the potential liquid biofuels over a layered double hydroxide supported Pd catalyst (abbreviated as CoAl-LDH/Pd). The CoAl-LDH/Pd catalyst showed high catalytic activity towards the hydrodeoxygenation of vanillin into 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP) under mild conditions in aqueous media. High MMP yield up to 86% was produced at $120^{\circ}C$ after 4 h. Kinetic studies revealed that the rate-determining step for the hydrodeoxygenation of vanillin was the hydrogenolysis of vanillyl alcohol. More importantly, the CoAl-LDH/Pd catalyst was highly stable without the loss of activity.

  • The supported bimetallic Co-containing catalysts promoted by the different amount of noble metal (Pd) have been studied in the dry reforming of methane. The activity, selectivity, stability and resistance to the carbon deposition of Co-Pd/$Al_2O_3$ catalysts depend on both the catalyst composition and process conditions. It has been observed that the Co-Pd/$Al_2O_3$ catalysts produce the various oxygenates from $CO_2$ + $CH_4$ at moderate pressures.

  • This account reports an overview of our findings in homogeneous Pd-catalyzed reactions. Herein we describe the new design in reactions of Group 14 element compounds and in homogeneous nanosize Pd catalysts. In the early stages of our study, we developed Pd-catalyzed transformations of allylic esters with disilanes, silylcyanides and acylsilanes to the corresponding silylation, cyanation and acylation products, respectively. We also developed a Pd-catalyzed three component coupling reaction of Group 14 element compounds involving 1,3-diene and acid chlorides to form β,γ-unsaturated ketone as a single product. Recently, we focus our attention on modifying the catalytic environment by nanosize Pd in order to improve the performance of Pd catalysts. These nanosystems realize efficient catalytic environment with remarkable enhancement in catalytic activity and unprecedented selectivity.

  • The second-order scattering (SOS) phenomenon of the interaction of Pd nanoparticles with protein was reported and a simple, sensitive, palladium nanoparticle-based assay for trace amount of protein with SOS technique was developed. The SOS intensities were significantly enhanced due to the interaction of Pd nanoparticles with bovine serum albumin (BSA) or human serum albumin (HSA) at pH 3.5 or 4.0, respectively. The maximum SOS peak appeared at 260/520 nm (λex/λem). The optimal experiment conditions, affecting factors and the influence of some coexisting substances were checked. The SOS intensity increased proportionally with the increase of Pd concentration below 3.0 × 10?5 mol·L?1, while declined gradually above 4.0 × 10?5 mol·L?1. BSA within the range of 0.01-2.6 μg·mL?1 and HSA of 0.01-1.7 μg·mL?1 can be detected with this method and the detection limits were 2.3 and 11.2 ng·mL?1, respectively. The method was successfully applied to the quantitative detection of total protein content in human serum samples with the maximum relative standard deviation (RSD) lower than 2.6% and the recoveries over the range of 99.5-100.5%.

[J. • The Pd/NiCr gate MISFET-type sensors were fabricated for detecting hydrogen dissolved in high-capacivity transformer oil. To improve stability and high concentration sensitivity of the sensor, Pd/NiCr double catalysis metal gate was used. To reduce the serious gate voltage drift of the sensor induced by hydrogen, the gate insulators of 2 FETs were constructed with double layer of silicon dioxide and silicon nitride. The hydrogen sensitivity of the Pd/NiCr gate MISFET is about a half of Pd/Pt gate MISFET's sensitivity but the Pd/NiCr gate MISFET has good stability and high concentration detectivity up to 1000 ppm.
