  • Initial hull form of 10 G/T and 40 knots class coastal patrol boat is newly developed. The resistance performances are experimentally and numerically investigated by model test and CFD technique. The effect of initial trim and a fin attached at hull side are studied together. Wave patterns are observed to make clear the relation between the performance and the wave characteristics. It can be found that the initial trim plays a role in increasing the resistance performance above a certain velocity, and the CFD technique can be used at the initial design stage of a high-speed planning boats.

  • The primary objective of the current work is to predict speed performance of the medium patrol boat over $F_N=0.5$ employing experimental materials based on the CFD before model tests. In other words, the predicted brake powers according to ship speeds are assessed satisfying the main engine capacity. The subject ships are selected the two different stern hull forms. The flow computation are conducted considering free surface and dynamic trim using a commercial CFD code(STAR-CCM+). The resistances of the bare-hull are obtained from CFD. Wave patterns, pressures and limiting streamlines on the hull and velocity distribution in the propeller plane for the two hull forms are compared using CFD. The effective powers of the object ships are assessed based on CFD. Resistance increase according to the attached appendages and quasi-propulsive efficiency are employed the experimental datas. Speed performance prediction method concerning high speed vessels like a medium patrol boat is developed employing CFD and experimental data.

  • The performance of the waterjet system of a patrol boat has been experimentally studied. A waterjet propulsion system has many advantages comparing with a conventional screw propeller especially for high speed craft because of its good cavitation performance. This paper describes experimental procedure and analysis method of self-propulsion tests with a 1/12-scale model. Experimental results were analyzed according to ITTC 96 standard method. The full-scale effective power and delivered power of the ship were also analyzed and the full-scale speed predicted from the model test compares reasonably with the measured full-scale results of the sea trial.

  • According to sailing condition, an exciting force for luminairie of naval vessels was measured and analyzed. A naval combat service support boat and P${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$(patrol killer guided missile) were selected as a target naval vessel. Due to their small size and fast speed, they received excessive vibration than other bigger naval vessels like destroyer. The vibration of luminairie was measured on their cruising and maximum speed. This could analyze exciting force for luminairie of naval vessels. Using this analyzed data, the validity of military standard for naval vessel was verified.

  • When the 60-ton-class patrol boat '72' of the Korea Coast Guard (KCG) was on duty and she accidentally collided with another patrol boat ('207', 200-ton-class) and sank. A month-long search found a small amount of lost items, but neither the crew nor the ship was found. For the first time in 39 years since the accident, the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) searched the boat 72 using the latest integrated geophysical techniques. A number of sonar images presumed to be of a sunken ship was acquired using a combined system of side scan sonar and marine magnetometer, operated at an altitude of approximately 30 m from the seabed. At the same time, a strong magnetic anomaly (100 nT) was detected in one place, indicating the presence of an iron ship. A video survey using a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) confirmed the presence of a shielding part of a personal firearm at the stern of the sunken vessel. Based on these comprehensive data, the sunken vessel discovered in this exploration was assumed to be '72'. This result is meaningful in terms of future ocean exploration and underwater archaeology, as the integrated system of various geophysical methods is an efficient means of identifying objects present in the water.

  • Since vessel traffic service system was introduced domestically in 1993, the incidence of vessel collision and grounding accidents has been diminished dramatically. However, recently the non-fishing boat incidents frequently occur outside boundary of vessel traffic control zone. Owing to this fact, before expanding and establishing 11 VTS centers all over the country by 2023, Korea Coast Guard has a plan to launch the nation's first researches on Mobile VTS Operation System utilizing Korea Coast Guard's patrol ships so as to devise practical countermeasures about those incidents.

  • AIS and V-PASS, which are used for safe navigation and automatic vessel arrival and departure, are mandatory standard equipment installed on all ships. If an aircraft is equipped with a ship identification system using AIS and V-PASS, and then ship identification information is received by a vessel such as a large fishery inspection boat or a patrol ship or a ground control system, we can quickly perform maritime surveillance and disaster response. This paper describes the development of a ship identification and display system using a ship identification device for aircraft. Flight test results and a future application plan are also included.
