  • Classification of blast resistance type of 129 Korean rice cultivars was carried out based on reaction pattern to 10 Japanese blast pathogen isolates(Pyricularia oryzae). The cultivars were divided into 11 groups based on the presumed resistance genes as follows; Pia type(19 cultivars), Pita-2 type(4), Pik type(3), Pib type(5), Piz type(11), Pik-s type(8), Pik and Pii type(4), Pia and Pita type(8), Pia and Pik type(6), Pita, Pik and Pii type(4) and no-grouping type(57). These results would provide important information to rice breeding for durable and broad resistance to rice blast.

  • Fresh sprouts such as alfalfa, mung bean, radish, broccoli, and soybean sprouts have become very popular due do their high nutritional value. However, there have been several outbreaks of illness in the last few years that have been attributed to sprout consumption. A number of methods have been used to improve the safety of seed sprouts. One promising technology is the use of ionizing radiation treatment. Irradiation with doses up to 8 kGy has been approved in the USA to control microbial pathogens in seeds intended for sprout production. This review focuses on the potential use of ionizing radiation in reducing the pathogen levels in seed sprouts. The effects of irradiation on seed germination and the nutritional quality of the sprouts are discussed.

  • Botrytis cinerea E12 was isolated from the leaves, flowers and fruits of eggplant in the greenhouse in Halrim, Kimhae and Dejeo, Pusan. The leaves infected with the pathogen were appeared initially brown-color, small gray spots at the edge, and finally fall down. The fruit was showed the symptoms of circular or irregular shapes, followed by sunken. When the symptoms were developed, the conidia formed on the surface with gray color. To determine the pathogenicity of B. cinerea E12 against the eggplants, the conidia were suspended with 30% tomato juice, PDB and sterile water, respectively. The result showed that the conidial suspension with 30% tomato juice was highly effective on the pathogenicity as more than 90%. Moreover, the symptoms caused by inoculum were the same as those of wild-type pathogen.

  • Endogenous salicylic acid (SA) and its predominant conjugates, SA 2-O-${\beta}$-D-glucoside (SAG) and the glucose ester of SA (SGE), increase dramatically during plant defense responses. Here I report the isolation and characterization of an Arabidopsis thaliana UDP-glucose:SA glucosyltransferase1 (AtSGT1) gene using a tobacco SGT gene previously reported, whose product catalyzes the formation of both SAG and SGE. The recombinant AtSGT1 protein had significant activities with SA and benzoic acid, and synthesized SAG and SGE. Northern blot analysis showed that AtSGT1 was rapidly induced both by exogenous SA and infection with the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae, indicating that pathogen-inducible AtSGT1 expression is an early disease response and may be involved in the accumulation of glucosyl SA during pathogenesis.

  • Tolclofos-methyl applied as seed dipping at 1,000 ppm for 3 hrs before sowing and soil drenching at the rate of 300 g ai./10 a in the middle of April protected emerging seedlings of Panax ginseng from damping-off caused by Rhiiutonia solani(AG2-1) in Yangjik Soil artificially infested with the pathogen. Germination rates with tolclofos-methyl, pencycuron, and control were 53.7%, 45.8%, and 7.5%, respectively, while the rate of the seeds at non-infested soil was 62.6%. The effectiveness of Tolclofos-methyl against the pathogen in the soil lasted upto 32 days in vitro. However, the transpiratio of ginseng seedlings increased greatly with chemical treatment, showing 0.02, 0.12, and 0.24 m1/cm2 leaf area/day at 0, 1,2, and 4 ppm a.i. of the fungicide, respectively.

  • Mitochondrial protein Nfu1 plays an important role in the assembly of mitochondrial Fe-S clusters and intracellular iron homeostasis in the model yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this study, we identified the Nfu1 ortholog in the human fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans. Our data showed that C. neoformans Nfu1 localized in the mitochondria and influenced homeostasis of essential metals such as iron, copper and manganese. Marked growth defects were observed in the mutant lacking NFU1, which suggests a critical role of Nfu1 in Fe-S cluster biosynthesis and intracellular metal homeostasis in C. neoformans.

  • The zebra shark Stegostoma fasciatum which had been reared in the commercial aquaria was found dead and submitted for postmortem examination. A pure bacterial culture was isolated from pale and enlarged liver. The analysis of ureC and 16S rRNA genes confirmed the isolate as Photobacterium (P.) damselae subsp. damselae and this pathogen was sensitive to gentamicin. Although, no mortality in mouse was observed in the experimental infection study, the isolation of this pathogen in aquarium fish is significant because it can act as a reservoir to other aquatic animals and can also be zoonotic potential to human during aquarium management. This paper describes the first isolation of P. damselae subsp. damselae from zebra shark.

  • Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae (Psy) is a major bacterial pathogen of many economically important plant species. Despite the severity of its impact, the genome sequence of the type strain has not been reported. Here, we present the draft genome sequence of Psy ATCC 19310. Comparative genomic analysis revealed that Psy ATCC 19310 is closely related to Psy B728a. However, only a few type III effectors, which are key virulence factors, are shared by the two strains, indicating the possibility of host-pathogen specificity and genome dynamics, even under the pathovar level.

  • We developed a microfluidic immunoassay platform for the detection of various analytes such as bacterial pathogen by packing antibody-immobilized glass beads in spatially-isolated microchambers on a microfluidic device. Primary amines of antibody were covalently conjugated to carboxyl-terminated glass beads previously treated with aminosilane followed by glutaraldehyde. Through this covalent binding, up to 905 $\mu$g immunoglobulin G (IgG) per gram of glass beads was immobilized. For application, glass beads attaching antibody specific to Escherichia coli O157:H7, a foodborne pathogen, were packed into a microfluidic device and used for the detection of the serotype. This prototype immunoassay device can be used for the simultaneous detection of multiple analytes by sequentially packing different-sized glass beads attaching different antibody in discrete microchambers on a single microfluidic device.

Four methods are used to treat SSHL, heath cultivation, herbal medicine for internal use, external remedy and acumoxatherapy. 3. Meridians, those are related with treatment of SSHL, are Kidney Meridian(Chok-soyin), Triple energizer Meridian(Shou-soyang), Gallbladder Meridian(Chok-soyang), Large intestine Meridian(Shou-yangmyong) and Small intestine Meridian(Shou-taeyang). 4. Pokrong, Jolrong and Gualrong, those are appeared some oriental documentary records, are not same with SSHL correctly. 5. In oriental medically, Yirong contains SSHL except slow progress. To teat SSHL, it is helpful to investigate method according to each symptoms and conditions in oriental medical documentary records.
