To achieve an entire end-to-end security, the classical authentication setting such that all participants have a same password is not practical since a password is not a common secret but a personal secret depending on an individual. Thus, an efficient client to client different password-based authenticated key agreement protocol (for short, EC2C-PAKA) has been suggested in the cross-realm setting. Very recently, however, a security weakness of the EC2C-PAKA protocol has been analyzed by Feng and Xu. They have claimed that the EC2C-PAKA protocol is insecure against a password impersonation attack. They also have presented an improved version of the EC2C-PAKA protocol. In this paper, we demonstrate that their claim on the insecurity of EC2C-PAKA protocol against a password impersonation attack is not valid. We show that the EC2C-PAKA protocol is still secure against the password impersonation attack. In addition, ironically, we show that the improved protocol by Feng and Xu is insecure against an impersonation attack such that a server holding password of Alice in realm A can impersonate Bob in realm B. We also discuss a countermeasure to prevent the attack.

Password-based authentication using smart card provides two factor authentications, namely a successful login requires the client to have a valid smart card and a correct password. While it provides stronger security guarantees than only password authentication, it could also fail if both authentication factors are compromised ((1) the user's smart card was stolen and (2) the user's password was exposed). In this case, there is no way to prevent the adversary from impersonating the user. Now, the new technology of biometrics is becoming a popular method for designing a more secure authentication scheme. In terms of physiological and behavior human characteristics, biometric information is used as a form of authentication factor. Biometric information, such as fingerprints, faces, voice, irises, hand geometry, and palmprints can be used to verify their identities. In this article, we review the biometric-based authentication scheme by Cheng et al. and provide a security analysis on the scheme. Our analysis shows that Cheng et al.'s scheme does not guarantee any kind of authentication, either server-to-user authentication or user-to-server authentication. The contribution of the current work is to demonstrate these by mounting two attacks, a server impersonation attack and a user impersonation attack, on Cheng et al.'s scheme. In addition, we propose the enhanced authentication scheme that eliminates the security vulnerabilities of Cheng et al.'s scheme.

In this paper, we propose a user friendly password input method for mobile devices which is secure against SSA. The proposed method is a numeric password input method such as a conventional PIN method. One of the buttons, numbers and colors, so as to display the two pieces of information to double. The user can select one of the colors or numbers within one button to type in the password. Because an attacker does not know whether the user has entered any color and number, the proposed technique is safe from the SSA. Also to be secure for smudge attacks and password guessing attacks through random changes in the number and color information.

Authentication between Server and Client is necessary in most of Internet Service because of increasing of using of Internet. Unix-based Server upgraded security of user authentication using "Shadow Password" instead of "crypt" function. But "Shadow Password" most use same authentication method about all services. But we individually can set user authentication method using PAM(Pluggable Authentication Module). This paper will propose user authentication system using Linux-PAM that use SMART CARD as authentication token.

Recently, many biometrics-based user authentication schemes for telecare medicine information systems (TMIS) have been proposed to improve the security problems in user authentication system. In 2014, Mishra et al. proposed an improvement of Awasthi-Srivastava's biometric based authentication for TMIS which is secure against the various attacks and provide mutual authentication, efficient password change. In this paper, we discuss the security of Mishra et al.'s authentication scheme, and we have shown that Mishra et al.'s authentication scheme is still insecure against the various attacks. Also, we proposed the improved scheme to remove these security problems of Mishra et al.'s authentication scheme, even if the secret information stored in the smart card is revealed. As a result, we can see that the improved biometric based authentication scheme is secure against the insider attack, the password guessing attack, the user impersonation attack, the server masquerading attack and provides mutual authentication between the user and the telecare system.

A three-party password-based authenticated key exchange (PAKE) protocol allows two clients registered with a trusted server to generate a common cryptographic key from their individual passwords shared only with the server. A key requirement for three-party PAKE protocols is to prevent an adversary from mounting a dictionary attack. This requirement must be met even when the adversary is a malicious (registered) client who can set up normal protocol sessions with other clients. This work revisits three existing three-party PAKE protocols, namely, Guo et al.'s (2008) protocol, Huang's (2009) protocol, and Lee and Hwang's (2010) protocol, and demonstrates that these protocols are not secure against offline and/or (undetectable) online dictionary attacks in the presence of a malicious client. The offline dictionary attack we present against Guo et al.'s protocol also applies to other similar protocols including Lee and Hwang's protocol. We conclude with some suggestions on how to design a three-party PAKE protocol that is resistant against dictionary attacks.

We propose a new authentication and key distribution protocol which is efficient and reliable for password-based systems. Various guessing attacks have been detected in applying conventional protocols to the password-based systems and additional overheads have been made in refined protocols to defeat those attacks. Using a one-time pad and a strong hash function, our proposed protocol promotes reliability and efficiency. Compared with other protocols, our protocol is secure against various protocol attacks including guessing attacks. In addition, this protocol is efficient in reducing communication and computation costs.
A digital certificate mandated by the Electronic Signature Act has become familiar in our daily lives as 95% of the economically active population hold certificates. Due to upgrades to 256 bit level security that have become effective recently, the security and reliability of digital certificates are expected to increase. Digital certificates based on Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) have been known as "no big problem," but the possibility of password exposure in cases of leaked digital certificates still exists. To minimize this vulnerability, various existing studies have introduced alternative password methods, expansion of certificate storage media, and multiple certification methods. These methods perform enhanced functions but also have limitations including the fact that the secureness of passwords is not guaranteed. This study suggests an alternative method for enhancing the level of password secureness as a way to improve password security. This new method improves security management and enhances the convenience of using digital technologies. The results may be used for developing digital certificate related security technologies and research in the future.

OTP(One time password) is widely used as an authentication method for financial and other security-sensitive transactions. OTP provides strong security since each password is used only one time while normal password-based authentications use passwords as long term secrets. However, OTP-based authentications relatively lack usability since they require users to hold an OTP card or generator. To overcome such a problem, smartphones start replacing OTP cards and such a method is called smart OTP. However, smart OTP inherits security vulnerabilities that smartphones have. In this paper, we propose a smart OTP authentication based on an extremely light authentication protocol called HB+. HB+ protocol is developed for low-cost devices and has small communication and computation costs. We present our solution and discuss its security, efficiency and practicality. Our contribution is providing a method to securely use smart OTP without losing its efficiency and usability.
The session initiation protocol (SIP) is a signaling protocol, which is used to controlling communication session creation, manage and finish over Internet protocol. Based on it, we can implement various services like voice based electronic commerce or instant messaging. Recently, Qiu et al. proposed an enhanced password authentication scheme for SIP. However, this paper withdraws that Qiu et al.'s scheme is weak against the off-line password guessing attack and has denial of service problem. Addition to this, we propose an improved password authentication scheme as a remedy scheme of Qiu et al.'s scheme. For this, the proposed scheme does not use server's verifier and is based on elliptic curve cryptography. Security validation is provided based on a formal validation tool ProVerif. Security analysis shows that the improved authentication scheme is strong against various attacks over SIP.
