  • Size effects of rice product powders on physical properties including suspension stability were investigated in this study. Endosperm, bran, and husk powders of rice with different size particles were prepared using the pin crusher or the ultrafine air mill. The physical properties of the powders were examined using particle size analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and spectrophotometry. The peak of the volume-weighted particle distribution of ultrafine endosperm particles was at $5.4\;{\mu}m$ whereas those of the bran and the husk appeared at 65 and $35\;{\mu}m$, respectively. Ultrafine particles of the endosperm and the husks dispersed better than larger-sized particles. As time elapsed, the dispersibility decreased, but the ultrafine particles were precipitated at the slowest rate. Our results suggest that ultrafine particles, including future nanosized particles, provide improved solubility and dispersibility resulting in better stability in the food colloidal suspension.

  • The charge and magnetic characteristics of LM (Low-metallic) and NAO (Non-asbestos-organic) brake wear particles were analyzed. The ratio of charged particles from total particles is about 86% of the LM pad and about 92% of the NAO pad. Number of charge per particle from the NAO pad is also higher than that of the LM pad. The ratio of magnetic particles from total particles increases with the particle size. The ratio of magnetic particles from the LM pad is about 15% for the particles with the size of 1 ㎛, and about 74% for ones with 5 ㎛. The ratio from the NAO pad is about 5% for the particles with the size from 0.5 ㎛ to 2 ㎛, and about 80% for the particles with 5 ㎛. Through the analysis of the components of the two pads with SEM-EDS (Scanning Electron Microscopy - Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy), it was found that the LM pad was occupied with more iron fraction than the NAO pad and that PM2.5-10 was occupied with more iron fraction than PM2.5. The particles smaller than 10 ㎛ (i.e. PM10) from the LM pad contained about 83% of charged particles, about 43% of magnetic particles, and about 93% of charged or magnetic particles. PM10 from the NAO pad contained about 88% of charged particles, about 15% of magnetic particles, and about 89% of charged or magnetic particles.

  • Twelve-hour size-resolved atmospheric aerosols were measured to determine size distributions of water-soluble organic carbon(WSOC) during daytime and nighttime, and to investigate sources and formation pathways of WSOC in individual particle size classes. Mass, WSOC, ${NO_3}^-$, $K^+$, and $Cl^-$ at day and night showed mostly bimodal size distributions, peaking at the size range of $0.32-0.55{\mu}m$(condensation mode) and $3.1-6.2{\mu}m$(coarse mode), respectively, with a predominant condensation mode and a minor coarse mode. While ${NH_4}^+$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$ showed unimodal size distributions which peaked between 0.32 and $0.55{\mu}m$. WSOC was enriched into nuclei mode particles(< $0.1{\mu}m$) based on the WSOC-to-mass and WSOC-to-water soluble species ratios. The sources and formation mechanisms of WSOC were inferred in reference to the size distribution characteristics of inorganic species(${SO_4}^{2-}$, ${NO_3}^-$, $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Na^+$, and $Cl^-$) and carbon monoxide. Nuclei mode WSOC was likely associated with primary combustion sources during daytime and nighttime. Among significant sources contributing to the condensation mode WSOC were homogeneous gas-phase oxidation of VOCs, primary combustion emissions, and fresh(or slightly aged) biomass burning aerosols. The droplet mode WSOC could be attributed to aqueous oxidation of VOCs in clouds, cloud-processed biomass burning aerosols, and small contributions from primary combustion sources. From the correlations between WSOC and soil-related particles, and between WSOC and sea-salt particles, it is suggested that the coarse mode WSOC during daytime is likely to condense on the soil-related particles($K^+$ and $Ca^{2+}$), while the WSOC in the coarse fraction during nighttime is likely associated with the sea-salt particles($Na^+$).

  • Ultrafine particles have been widely used in many high technology industrial areas. The spherical nonagglomerated and uniform nanometer-size $SiO_{2}$ particles are synthesized by the injection of TEOS vapor, ions and reaction gas in furnace. Ions were generated by Corona discharge electrode and these ions charge $SiO_{2}$ particles. As a result, spherical, nonagglomerated and ultrafine particles are generated in various conditions, it's morphology, charging portion and size distribution are examined by using TEM, ESP and SMPS. As the applied voltage of electrode changes from 0 kV to 5.0 kV, it is observed that the mean diameter of $SiO_{2}$ particle decreases from 94 nm to 42 nm.

  • Automotive brake pads with four different sizes of zircon particles (average sizes of 1㎛, 6㎛, 75㎛, and 140㎛, respectively) were investigated to evaluate the size effect of abrasive particles on friction performance. Results showed that the brake pads with the larger size of zircon particles tend to show better frictional stability and low pad wear. However, the rotor surface was severely abraded in the case of using larger zircon particles. On the other hand, the small zircon particles in the pads showed the fast increase of the coefficient of friction with friction force oscillation and the tendency was pronounced at low sliding speeds. The brake pads with small particle sizes also exhibited strong fade phenomena at elevated temperatures.

  • As the environmental problems grow, the regulation of the pollutants emitted from power plants increases. Most of the pollutants in particle phase are removed by particle removal facilities, but fine particles between 0.1 micron and I micron in diameter have a low removal efficiency compared to particles in other size ranges. Therefore the present concern has concentrated on the removal of those fine particles. The purpose of this study is to grow fine particles by condensation to the range larger than I micron. Theoretically the general dynamic equation is solved with an assumption that the particle size follows a log-normal distribution to calculate the temporal behavior of the size distribution. Experiments have been carried out to compare the results with the theoretical predictions. Particles grown by condensation are sampled by impactors and observed with SEM photographs.

  • Agglomeration-free indium oxide particles were produced by ultrasonic pyrolysis of indium nitrate(3 hy-drate) solution. Th mean size of particles was increased from 3 $\mu\textrm{m}$ to 11$\mu\textrm{m}$ with increasing intial con-centrations of indium nitrate from 0.05mol% to 4.83 mol% When the input rate of indium nitrate solution was increased from 0.1 cm3/min to 0.8cm3/min the size of particles remained same and only the pro-duction rate of particles was increased. At 300$^{\circ}C$ the particles were white color with low crystallinity. But the color turned into yellow with increasing reaction temperature. The change of particle size was not ob-served with increasing temperatuer up to 700$^{\circ}C$ IR spectrum and TGA analysis confirmed that the purity of indium oxide was increased with temperature of reaction.

  • As an interpretation of existing jamming effects, the main variables affecting the increase in stiffness due to jamming are known as system density, jamming density, pressure, and particulate temperature. The main variable, jamming density, is closely related to the distribution of particle size and contact properties such as particle shape and friction. However, the complexity of these variables makes it difficult to fully understand the mechanism of the jamming effect. In this paper, we focus on the jamming effects of particles that have more elastic properties than particles such as sand and coffee powder, which are commonly used as constituent particles of existing jamming, in order to reduce complicated factors such as temperature and concentrate on jamming effects based on elastic characteristics of particles. It was experimentally explored the possibility of increasing stiffness by mixing particles of different sizes rather than simply increasing the bending stiffness by controlling the particle size. Through simulations and experiments, we found a case where the stiffness of each particle size distribution is larger than the stiffness of each particle size.

  • The nanosized silver and gold particles are prepared by ERC method in which metal vapors with high temperature is rapidly quenched by coolants such as liquid nitrogen or liquid argon. In order to monitor the crystal structural changes on the internal and the surface of the nanosized noble metal particles, lattice parameter, internal strain and Debye-Waller factor are investigated, and the calculation of X-ray diffraction scattering intensity is performed. The lattice parameters of silver and gold particles agree with those of bulk materials, and crystal internal strain of the metal particles is not changed by rapid cooling. The Debye-Waller factor of gold particles is increased with decreasing particle size because of the surface softening phenomenon of nanosized particles, but the crystal structural change on the surface of the particles is not detected from the comparison the calculated X-ray diffraction profile with the experimental profile on gold particles with the particle size of 4 nm.
