  • PURPOSES : Determination of particle packing model variables that can be used for formulation of new DEM based particle packing model by examining existing particle packing models METHODS : Existing particle packing models are thoroughly examined by analytical reformulation and sensitivity analysis in order to set up DEM based new particle packing model and to determine its variables. All model equations considered in this examination are represented with consistent expressions and are compared to each others to find mathematical and conceptual similarity in expressions. RESULTS : From the examination of existing models, it is observed that the models are very similar in their shapes although the derivation of the models may be different. As well, it is observed that variables used in some existing models are comprehensive enough to estimate particle packing but not applicable to DEM simulation. CONCLUSIONS : A set of variables that can be used in DEM based particle packing model is determined.

  • We present an electrical particle velocity profiler using particle transit time across uneven inter-gap electrodes. We measure both the particle position and velocity from the voltage signals generated by the particles passing across sensing electrodes, thus obtaining the velocity profile of the particles in a microfluidic channel. In the experimental study, we use polystyrene microparticles to characterize the performance of the electrical particle velocity profiler. The particle velocity profile is measured with the uncertainty of 5.44%, which is equivalent to the uncertainty of 5% in the previous optical method. We also experimentally demonstrate the capability of the present method for in-channel clogging detection. Compared to the previous optical methods, the present electrical particle velocity profiler offers the simpler structure, the cheaper cost, and the higher integrability to micro-biofluidic systems.

  • A kinetic model fur the particle coarsening behavior was developed. The proposed model considered the critical particle size which can be derived from Gibbs-Thomson equation unlike the conventional approach. In this study, the proposed particle coarsening model was applied to study the coarsening behavior of titanium nitride (TiN particle) in microalloyed steel weld HAZ. Particle size distributions and mean particle size by the proposed model were in agreement with the experimental results. Meanwhile, using additivity rule, the isothermal model was extended to predict particle coarsening behavior during continuous thermal cycle.

  • As soon as a new air filter is applied to an air purification process, the filter gets loaded with dust particles. Thus, the study on the particle loading characteristics of air filter is very essential in order to understand the real filtration phenomena during filter use. In this study, we investigated the effect of particle and filter charge on the particle loading property of air filter. Charged filter and uncharged filter prepared by discharging the charged filter by isopropyl alcohol were used as test samples, and three types of particle having different charge states were supplied to filters tested. For neutralized particles there was a big difference in areal mass loading rates between charged and uncharged filters due to the very small amount of particle charge, on the other hand the difference was diminished for atomized particle and finally almost vanished for corona charged particles. The pressure drop of filter loaded with corona charged particles was only half of those for neutralized and atomized particles at the same areal mass loading because of the porous structure of particle deposit formed on filter fibers, caused by the space charge effect between particles.

  • Particle deposition on a semiconductor wafer larger than 100 mm was studied experimentally and numerically. Particularly the electrostatic effect on particle deposition velocity was investigated. The experimental apparatus consisted of a particle generation system, a particle deposition chamber and a wafer surface scanner. Experimental data of particle deposition velocity were obtained for a semiconductor wafer of 200 mm diameter with the applied voltage of 5,000 V and PSL particles of the sizes between 83 and 495 nm. The experimental data of particle deposition velocity were compared with the present numerical results and the existing experimental data for a 100 mm wafer by Ye et al. (1991) and Opiolka et al. (1994). The present numerical method took into consideration the particle transport mechanisms of convection, Brownian diffusion, gravitational settling and electrostatic attraction in an Eulerian frame of reference. Based on the comparison of the present experimental and numerical results with the existing experimental results the present experimental method for a 200 mm semiconductor wafer was found to be able to present reasonable data.

  • Charged liquid particle's behavior in electric and flow field was simulated to define the effect of electric field on the contact area and its dispersion. For the simulation of flow and electric field finite volume method was applied. To find out the particle's moving path in that field lagrangian equation of motion was solved by Runge-Kutta methods. We assumed that the particle was charged 10% of Rayleigh limit while the particle passing through the electrode and the particle does not have an effect on the electric field. In case of 30[Kv] of voltage charging the particles injected from the central 60% of the nozzle injection area adhere to the grounded moving plate and no dispersion occurred. Increasing the charged voltage to 40[Kv], it brought about the same phenomena as that of 30[Kv] charging except the dispersion. Voltage increasing from 30[Kv] to 40 [Kv] caused higher Coulomb force acts on the particle and it made the particle dispersion.

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of single or multi-particle size limestone on the egg shell quality, egg production, egg quality and feed intake in laying hens. A total of 280 laying hens (ISA brown) were used in this 10-wk trial. Laying hens were randomly assigned to 4 treatments with 14 replications per treatment and 5 adjacent cages as a replication (hens were caged individually). The experimental treatments were: i) L, basal diet+10% large particle limestone; ii) LS1, basal diet+8% large particle limestone+2% small particle limestone; iii) LS2, basal diet+6% large particle limestone+4% small particle limestone; iv) S, basal diet+10% small particle limestone. The egg production was unaffected by dietary treatments. The egg weight in S treatment was lighter than other treatments (p<0.05). The egg specific gravity in S treatment was lower than other treatments (p<0.05). The eggshell strength and eggshell thickness in S treatment were decreased when compared with other dietary treatments (p<0.05). The laying hens in LS1 and LS2 treatment had a higher average feed intake than the other two treatments (p<0.05). Collectively, the dietary multi-particle size limestone supplementation could be as efficient as large particle size limestone.

  • As semiconductor process was highly integrated, particle contamination became a major issue. Because particle contamination is related with process yields directly, particles with a diameter larger than half pitch of gate should be controlled. PBMS (Particle beam mass spectrometry) is one of powerful nano particle measurement device. It can measure 5~500 nm particles at ~ 100 mtorr condition in real time by in-situ method. However its usage is restricted to research filed only, due to its big device volume and high price. Therefore aperture changeable aerodynamic lenses (ACALs) which can control particle focusing characteristics by changing its aperture diameter was proposed in this study. Unlike conventional aerodynamic lenses which changes particle focusing efficiency when operating condition is changed, ACALs can maintain particle focusing efficiency. Therefore, it can be used for a multi-monitoring system that connects one PBMS and several process chambers, which greatly improves the commercialization possibility of the PBMS. ACALs was designed based on Stokes number and evaluated by numerical method. Numerical analysis results showed aperture diameter changeable aerodynamic lenses can focus 5 to 100 nm standard particles at 0.1 to 10 torr upstream pressure.

  • To solve the large scale optimization problem approximately, various approaches have been introduced. Recently the Particle Swarm Optimization has been introduced. The Particle Swarm Optimization simulates the process of birds flocking or fish schooling for food, as with the information of each agent is skated by other agents. The Particle Swarm Optimization technique has been applied to various optimization problems whose variables are continuous. However, there are seldom trials for visualization of searching process. This paper proposes a new visualization tool for searching process of Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm. The proposed tool is effective for understanding the searching process of Particle Swarm Optimization method and educational for students. • A particle trajectory model to simulate two-phase particle-laden crossjets into two-dimensional horizontal free stream has been developed to study the variations of the jet trajectories and velocity variations of the gaseous and the particulate phases. The following conclusions may be drawn from the predicted results, which are in agreement with experimental observations. The penetration of the two-phase jet in a crossflow is greater than that of the single-phase jet. The penetration of particles into the free stream increases with increasing particle size, solids-gas loading ratio and carrier gas to free stream velocity ratio at the jet exit. When the particle size is large, the solid particles separate from the carrier gas , while the particles are completely suspended in the carrier gas for the case of small size particles. As the particle to carrier gas velocity ratio at the jet exit is less than unity, the particles in the vicinity of the jet exit are accelerated by the carrier gas. As the injection angle is increased, the difference of the particle trajectory from that of the pure gas becomes larger. Therefore, it can be concluded that the velocities and trajectories of the particle-laden jets in a crossflow change depending on the solids-gas loading ratio, particle size, carrier gas to free stream velocity ratio and particle to gas velocity ratio at the jet exit.
