A study on the UHF signal Characteristics by two kinds of PD in GIS (GIS내 PD 종류에 따른 UHF신호의 특성연구)

  • This paper describes the analysis of UHF signals taking place at partial discharges due to defects in GIS. To imitate the defects, two kinds of electrode were employed. One is to generate the PD due to corona discharge, and the other surface discharge. As a result, the magnitude of the UHF signals acquired from the discharges increased with the applied voltage. However, each frequency distribution trend at corona discharges and surface discharge was similar even though the applied voltage increased. Frequency distribution between corona discharge and surface discharge was clearly distinguish.

  • In general, corona discharges in air are accompanied with electromagnetic wave which has wide frequency range up to UHF and can be detected by rod or loop antennas. But the existence of background noises such as TV, radio or electronic disturbances makes it difficult to separate corona discharge signals from them in the outside fields. The results of experiment using wideband antenna (30kHz - 2GHz) show that corona discharges have dependences on electrode types and independences on background noises.

  • In this paper the patterns of partial discharges(PD) occurred from some defects at the interface of cable joints as the function of the phase of the applied voltage were investigated in order to discern the kind of a defect. The results obtained in this study show that it is possible to distinguish the PD patterns between the void discharges and the treeing or tracking discharges which were occured at the cable joint interface. While the state of defect transfers from a void discharge into a tree or tracking discharge with a aging time, the skewness for both half of the applied voltage cycle is observed to go to the negative value.

  • In this paper, it was investigated the applicability of TF analysis for the discrimination of air corona in on-site PD measurement. For the purpose, single and multiple discharges combined with oil discharges and air corona were generated and measured by use of artificial models and HFPD pulse detector. Through the TF analysis, data clusters could be classified each other in the TF Map, even in the case of multiple discharges. Therefore, it is known that TF analysis could be applied for the improvement of on-site PD measurement.

  • Off-line and on-line partial discharges were measured on a 828MVA, 22kV and direct hydrogen-cooled large turbine generator. Partial discharge tests were conducted using digital partial discharge detector(PDD) and turbine generator analyzer(TGA). PDD and TGA showed that off-line partial discharge pattern seems to be very, similar to that found with on-line. Most of the partial discharge is originating with the stator slot in the three phases. As the partial discharge activity is very low, the stator insulation condition of this generator is very good.

  • Partial discharge(PD) tests were performed when the hydrogenerator(rated 11kV and 25MVA) was shut down(off-line). Six cable couplers were installed in the ring bus as well as within hydrogenerator terminal box. PD tests were conducted using partial discharge analyzer(PDA) and digital partial discharge detector(PDD). PDA showed that the normalized quantity number(NQN) and the partial discharge magnitude increased with increase of ac voltage. Slot discharges were discovered in three phases(A, B and C) at the rated voltage. PDA and PDD test results are in accordance with the pattern and magnitude of partial discharge. This hydrogenerator stator windings were in good condition.

  • This paper presents new diagnosis technique for detecting a partial discharge(PD) using antenna. The wavelet transform is applied for the analysis of PD pulse signal because it is difficult to identify PD signal using electromagnetic waves detected by antenna. The capabilities of the proposed diagnosis methodology for detecting PD signal is verified on experiment in laboratory.

  • Both motion of free metallic particles from which most GIS internal failures are caused and partial discharges from the particles were examined using EHV GIS test chamber. Effects from particle length and gas pressure which are main factors to lead to breakdown failure were investigated theoretically and experimentally. Magnitude of both lift-off voltage and partial discharge inception voltage were measured respectively and, through these measurements, this paper showed the possibility of predicting breakdown fault and of taking action to prevent the fault in advance. The measurement of partial discharge when the particles began to move could be adopted to decide minimum sensitivity in developing predictive diagnostic equipments. Both the amount of apparent discharge and real discharge in GIS were examined theoretically and experimentally, then experimental results were analyzed on the basis of the theory.

  • Measurements of AE signals caused by partial discharges were performed by using an ultrasonic measurement technique to diagonise the electrical treeing deterioration in XLPE cable. We also examined the partial discharge magnitude and AE signals(peak-to-peak) with the increase of the deterioration time. From these results, it was found that AE signal due to partial discharge can be greatly detected at the peak value of positive polarities prior to the breakdown voltages, and the magnitude of AE signals was closely related to the current pulses by the increase of deterioration, and it appeared that AE signals(peak-to-peak) was proportional to partial discharge magnitude. Attenuation and time-delaying characteristics of ultrasonic signals propagated in various polymers sample by using ultrasonic oscillation and receiving systems are also reported as a basic data of ultrasonic measurements in XLPE cable.

  • Recently many research activities on the diagnosis of stator winding insulation of high-voltage motors have been reported. Most of them utilize a trend analysis of partial discharges. In this paper, a novel on-line monitoring system for an insulation diagnosis is proposed. This system displays magnitude and phase angle distribution of partial discharge. The partial discharge activities can be interpreted more precisely by these techniques.
