Diagnosis of Medium Voltage Cables for Nuclear Power Plant

  • Most accidents of medium-voltage cables installed in nuclear power plants result from the initial defect of internal insulators or the initial failure due to poor construction. However, as the service years of plants increase, the possibility of cable accidents is also rapidly increases. This is primarily caused by electric, mechanical, thermal, and radiation stresses. Recently, much attention is paid to the study of cable diagnoses. To date, partial discharge and Tan${\delta}$ measurements are known as reliable methods to diagnose the aging of medium-voltage cables. High frequency partial discharge measurement techniques have been widely used to diagnose cables in transmission and distribution systems. However, the on-line high frequency partial discharge technique has not been used in the nuclear power plants because of the plant shutdown risk, degraded measurement sensitivity, and application problems. In this paper, the partial discharge measurement with a portable device was tried to evaluate the integrity of the 4.16kV and 13.8kV cable lines. The test results show that the high detection sensitivity can be achieved by the high frequency partial discharge technique. The present technique is highly attractive to diagnose medium voltage cables in nuclear power plants.

  • This paper analyzes of PD occurrence position through an analysis of the arrival time difference between the GIS partial discharge signal. Because of GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear) is a facility very important power equipment and as part of the equipment that make up the power system, the stabilization of the power industry, which accounted for 88.5% share of GIS substation in the form of a substation is an important equipment for power supply. In the situation where we are gradually expanding the need for preventive diagnosis in order to improve the efficiency of equipment management and failure prevention for Preventive diagnosis. In this paper as a method for extracting pre-defect of failure of GIS Apply the average value method of calculating the 5 times each using a pulse of the first time of the second pulse (${\Delta}t$) with an oscilloscope generation position PD(Partial Discharge). the results of GIS internal inspection, the partial discharge of the actual the position of the partial discharge was confirmed with an accuracy of about 82% of positions. Arrival time difference in the most effective manner if the partial discharge of GIS internal occurs by applying the averaging method and TOA(Time of arrival) method, the partial discharge occurs you through the measurement and analysis of PD signal occurs was confirmed in the experiment are presented and diagnostic methods location tracking.

  • To detect partial discharge of 154kV joint box, we have made experiment by using the HFCT sensor. Generally the signals which are detected in partial discharge test of underground power transmission cable are accompanied with both noises of high voltage and noises of surrounding Power cable. The most noise in near to end part of joint box is corona, beside other noises flowed from surrounding area. Partial discharge test is difficulty due to these noises. First, we test reliability on both injection of calibration signal in NJB and removal of low frequency. After that, we had analyzed frequencies by measuring signals in IJB with 300[m] distance from NJB. Also we had measured S/N ratio by using the indirected injection method of calibration signal in IJB. In this experiment, two measurement methods were difference of detection acquisition, but these had the equal frequency properties.

  • In this paper, we design two types of the sensor module to measure the partial discharge causing failures and electric fires for power incoming/distributer. And evaluate the performance thereof. Analyze the correlation of the phase current and the partial discharge and overheating. Proposes to apply the stability index by utilizing the analyzed information and use in order to prevent the failure or electrical fire of the power incoming/distributer.

  • In order to recognize the deterioration of insulation system by partial discharge (PD), the characteristics of PD patterns which are occurring at the interface between epoxy and rubber materials in extra high voltage cable joints, have been investigated. The artificial defects such as voids, metal particles, insulation fiber and water impregnated insulation fiber are planted between the interfaces. A high frequency partial discharge detection system was used for measuring PD signals. An analysis of the PD patterns is focused on the shape of PD pattern, phase, width and time-dependence for each artificial defect. The PD Patterns in each defect show the different behaviors and it is suggested that the precise discrimination of PD patterns could be used for the diagnosis of deterioration in the insulation systems.

  • We studied partial discharge detection by sensing electromagnetic waves emitted from the partial discharge source in an HV Rotating Machine using a UWB sensor. In this study, we design a new type of compact low frequency UWB sensor based on micro-strip technology. We also perform many experiments of offline and dismantled testing compared with the existing HFCT on stator winding of the HV generator. We mention the detailed design of a new compact UWB sensor along with the time domain PRPD pattern and frequency domain results of partial discharge in the stator winding of a 6.6kV rotating machine by offline testing performed in a laboratory.

But partial discharges have very complex characteristics of discharge pattern so it is required continuous research to development of precise analysis method. In recent, the study of partial discharge is carrying out discover of initial defect of power equipment through condition diagnosis and system development of degradation diagnosis using HFPD(High Frequency Partial Discharge) detection. In this study, simulated transformer is manufactured and HFPD occurred from transformer is measured with broad band antenna in real time, the degradation grade of transformer is analyzed through produced patterns in simulated transformer according to applied voltages.

  • It has been confirmed that the inner defect of transformer and the perfect diagnosis for aging are closely related to safe electric power transmission system and that the detection of accident and diagnosis technique turn out to be very important issues. Since electric power machinery consists of various kinds of components, however, it is very difficult to make a diagnosis for aging by one parameter. Thus, diagnosis for aging is feasible only through the combination of various parameters. Recently, various expert systems have been developed and applied to diagnosis for aging, but they are not yet reliable enough to apply to the real system. In this paper, XLPE which is ultra high voltage cable insulator material were chosen to investigate the influence of void on insulator material using partial discharge. Obtained data have been processed by PRPD (phased resolved partial discharge) distribution function and K-means. And statistical and cluster distribution of partial discharge have been analysed and investigated.
