  • The job creation has been the most pressing issue after financial crisis in many countries around the world. Various policies for creating jobs have been implemented in order to revitalize regional economy in Korea. It has been known that the jobs have been created more in low-wage and part-time work than high-wage and full-time work. The purpose of this study is to analyze the differentiation of startups job in local labor market areas(LLMAs) in terms of job quantity as well as job quality. As the spatial unit, 121 local labor market areas which were delineated based on self-containment rate(demand and supply side of labor market) and numbers of resident workers are used. Also due to difference of the size of employment, LLMAs are classified into 3 groups: large, Medium, small LLMAs. The major results are as follows: First, the characteristics of the job creation are varied among 3 groups in terms of the quantitative and qualitative aspects. Highly waged and highly value-added jobs have been created more in large LLMAs, but full-time jobs created more in small LLMAs. Secondly, the job creation of LLMAs is somewhat weakly correlated to regional economic performance. While the quality of jobs is correlated to regional economic performance in Medium LLMAs, the quantity of jobs is significantly correlated to regional economic performance in small LLMAs. The results of this research give some implications for implementing the effective policy to create jobs related to regional economy, indicating that differentiated strategies for 3 groups of LLMAs is critically important.

  • Purpose: This study was to the investigate recognition of physical activity between physical therapy students (PTS) and non-physical therapy students (NPTS) by measuring the level of physical activity using International Physical Activity Questionnaires (IPAQ). Methods: A cross-sectional survey was completed by 191 university students. The IPAQ with an additional question (Is physical activity necessary for your future job?) was used to evaluate the recognition and the amount of physical activity. The collected data were calculated as MET-minutes scores and were classified as walking, moderate, and vigorous level of physical activity. The students were analyzed by dividing them into those who had a part-time employment (16 PTS and 12 NPTS) and those who did not have a part-time employment (80 PTS and 83 NPTS). Results: In students with a part-time employment, no significances were observed between the PTS and NPTS, in terms of MET, frequency and time of physical activity, and sitting time (p>0.05). In students without a part-time employment, the NPTS was significantly higher than the PTS for the MET and frequency of physical activity in a vigorous level (p<0.05), and there were no significant differences in other levels of physical activity (p>0.05). In the additional question, the PTS showed a slightly higher than the NPTS (p<0.05). Conclusion: The physical therapy students did not remarkable barrier to recognition of physical activity, but there was a difference in their recognition of the vigorous level of physical activity. Therefore, the understanding of physical activity for PTS would play an important role in the recognition of how physical activity can be promoted.

  • This article is an exploratory study on the recent growth of short-hours part-time work in Korea. The short-hours part-time work has been rapidly growing among low-educated women over sixty, particularly among bereaved or divorced women, contrary to the expectation of the government that encouraged the part-time work by means of work-family balance for working mothers or middle-aged women who experienced career interruption. The short-hours part-time jobs are concentrated in social service industry, mostly elderly care service jobs, and their working conditions are extremely poor, mostly low-wage jobs with no social insurances except for health insurance. In this study, we discuss why the short-hours part-time work has grown so fast in Korea since the mid 2000s. Using various governmental statistics, we examine the effects of the labor demand and supply situations during the time period, the legal context that is related with the exempt clause of the labor law, and the institutional context related with the government's public job creation projects for the elderly. We suggest some public policies needed to slow down the growth of the short-hours part-time jobs and to elevate their working conditions.

  • Purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate nursing students' awareness of nursing and future career according to school years and gender. Method: Data was collected using a self-report questionnaire from October to December, 2007. Participants were 279 second year and 250 fourth year nursing students from 6 universities located in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, Chungcheong-do, Gangwon-do, Jeonla-do, and Gyeongsang-do. Result: 1) The senior showed higher scores in 'a job with plenty of spare time', and 'good possibilities to be promoted' than the sophomore. Otherwise the senior students showed lower score in 'possibilities for part-time working' than the sophomore. 2) The senior showed higher scores in 'cooperative relationship', 'physical health', and 'contribution to nursing' than the sophomore. But in 'nursing skill', the senior showed lower score than the sophomore. 3) There were significant differences in wanting department, wanting graduate school, and major obstacles for the longer working between the sophomore and senior. 4) Male students were lower academic performance than female. 5) There were significant differences 'a job with social reputation', and 'contribution to nursing' by gender. Conclusion: These results suggest it's important that nursing educators make nursing students improve their job professionalism and guide nursing students' future career in view of students' gender and school year.

  • This study aims to analyse the differences of job satisfaction in road freight transportation industry workers by different types of employment. The researchers utilized reliability test and factor analysis to estimate the validity and feasibility of the questionnaire. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was also applied to assess the differences of job satisfaction level by different employment types. The results of reliability test and factor analysis clearly show that questionnaire samples are reliable and feasible. The multivariate analysis of variance result shows statistical insignificance in the level of job satisfaction between part-time workers and special type ones. On the other hand, there was a significant difference between full-time workers and those in other types of employment. The significant variables such as income, welfare, and working hour, etc were discovered.
