  • If a multiplicative function f is commutable with a quadratic form x2 + xy + y2, i.e., f(x2 + xy + y2) = f(x)2 + f(x) f(y) + f(y)2, then f is the identity function. In other hand, if f is commutable with a quadratic form x2 - xy + y2, then f is one of three kinds of functions: the identity function, the constant function, and an indicator function for ℕ \ pℕ with a prime p.

  • This paper presents a dehazing method based on a fuzzy membership function and variational method. The proposed algorithm consists of three steps: i) estimate transmission through a pixel-based operation using a fuzzy membership function, ii) refine the transmission using an L1-norm-based regularization method, and iii) obtain the result of haze removal based on a hazy image formation model using the refined transmission. In order to prevent color distortion of the sky region seen in conventional methods, we use a trapezoid-type fuzzy membership function. The proposed method acquires high-quality images without halo artifacts and loss of color contrast.

  • There are two main approaches for estimating the discontinuous regression function nonparametrically. One is the direct approach, the other is the indirect approach. The major goal of the two approaches are different. The direct approach focuses on the overall good estimation of the regression function itself, whereas the indirect approach focuses on the good estimation of jump locations. Apparently, the two approaches are quite different in nature. Gijbels et al. (2007) argue that the comparison of two approaches does not make much sense and that it is even difficult to choose an appropriate criterion for comparisons. However, it is obvious that the indirect approach also has the regression curve estimate as the subsidiary result. Therefore it is necessary to verify the appropriateness of the indirect approach as the estimator of the discontinuous regression function itself. Park (2009a) compared the performance of two approaches through a simulation study. In this paper, we consider a more general case and draw some useful conclusions.

  • Purpose: This study investigated the effects of a recovery education program on rehabilitation motivation, symptoms, and function for schizophrenic patients. Method: The study employed a quasi-experimental design. Participants for the study were 27 patients with schizophrenia, 14 in the experimental group and the other 13 in the control group. Data were analyzed by using the SPSS/WIN 11.5 program with Fisher's exact test, t-test, and Repeated measures ANOVA. Results: After a 7 week intervention, participants in the recovery education program group reported increased rehabilitation motivation and function scores, which was significantly different from those in the control group. Conclusion: A recovery education program was effective improving rehabilitation motivation and function for schizophrenic patients. Therefore, this program is recommended as a rehabilitation strategy for schizophrenic patients.

  • This paper proposes a new approach to identifying the unknown parameters of continuous LTI systems. For parameter identification in continuous-time systems, the Linear Integral Filter (LIF) method generally has been used in the beginning. Especially, one of the most efficient LIF methods in the literature is to use a weighting function satisfying specific three constraints. In high order systems, even though the weighting function satisfies the three constraints, it is impossible to identify the exact parameters of the systems because of information loss arising from a great amount of magnitude differences among the weighting function and its high-order derivatives. This paper, using an LMI technique, shows the limitation in designing the weighting function of the existing methods, and ...

  • The rising incidence of early gastric cancer has enabled the development of function-preserving gastrectomy with the focus on post gastrectomy quality of life and adherence to sound oncologic principles. It is concurrent with the growing popularity of minimally invasive surgery; and both are commonly used together. The different kinds of function-preserving gastrectomy included in this review are: pylorus-preserving and proximal gastrectomy, vagus nerve preservation, sentinel node navigation, and various endoscopic & minimally-invasive techniques. In this article the indications, techniques, oncologic safety, functional benefit, and outcomes of each kind of function-preserving gastrectomy are discussed.

  • Data mining is the method to find useful information for large amounts of data in database, and one of the important goals is to search and decide the association for several variables. The task of association rule mining is to find certain association relationships among a set of data items in a database. There are three primary measures for association rule, support and confidence and lift. In this paper we developed a association rule ranking function by decreased lift influence to generate association rule for items satisfying at least one of three criteria. We compared our function with the functions suggested by Park (2010), and Wu et al. (2004) using some numerical examples. As the result, we knew that our decision function was better than the function of Park's and Wu's functions because our function had a value between -1 and 1regardless of the range for three association thresholds. Our function had the value of 1 if all of three association measures were greater than their thresholds and had the value of -1 if all of three measures were smaller than the thresholds.

  • A rice cultivar, Taebaegbyeo, is highly resistant to rice blast and moderately resistant to bacterial leaf blight (BLB) caused by Magnaporthe grisea and Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae, respectively. To study the rice disease resistance mechanism, we generated rice deletion M3 mutants by gamma-ray irradiation. Blast and BLB responses of 16,000 M3 mutants were screened by inoculating mixtures of 4 races (KJ-201, H-1113a, KI-313, KI-409) of M. grisea and 3 Korean races of X. oryzae pv. oryzae. We selected so far 21 M3 mutants of Taebaegbyeo showing high susceptibility to the diseases. One of the mutants, KCT-6417, was susceptible to KI-1113a race of M. grisea, suggesting the deletion of a race-specific blast resistance gene in the mutant. To isolate rice genes involved in blast resistance and defense response, we take a PCR-based suppression subtractive hybridization approach using cDNAs of blast-inoculated wild type and the KCT-6417 as a tester and a driver, respectively. Genes specifically expressed in the wild type will be presented. The selected genes would give us a clue to understand mechanism for the race specific resistance and defense responses against M. grisea H-1113a in Taebaegbyeo.

  • Environmental education, which has been thought as the most fundamental solution to environmental problems, should be performed not only in school but also in home and society with a long-term plan. In line with this, environmental-friendly attitude in daily life should be achieved by the perception of the vital environmental principle-new understanding of relation between nature and human being. It is in the city park that children in urban area, who has little opportunity to contact nature, have rather easier access to nature and realize the principle. Despite such great potential, the city park in Korea has not played its pivotal role because of lack of both facilities and activities. In addition, existing studies on this issue are not satisfactory. Therefore, this study is aimed at analyzing and evaluating city parks' environmental education function, potential and problems according to their types, then offering practical reform measures and programs in order to make students better understand the parks as an everyday natural experience spot. These plans are not based on full-scale revision, instead focuses on optimizing potential of existing natural environment and parks. Additionally, activities to experience various nature are included in the study. The value of city park is not decided by the park itself, but by its relationship with visitors. Environmental education function of city park is not confined to building up facilities and providing programs. It also should be complemented and improved, reflecting visitors' opinions and evaluation of environmental education.
